<p>The best one to come to our door so far:</p>
<p>Little girl dressed as a farm girl riding a chicken! From the waist up, she was the farm girl: freckles, braids, straw hat, the top half of denim overalls over a shirt. Around her waist, she was wearing the chicken body and head (yellow “feathers” and all) and the denim overall legs on either side of the chicken. The girl’s legs were in the yellow feathery stuff.</p>
<p>Adorable. Effective. And a A LOT of work by someone!</p>
<p>The best one here - a topiary elephant that reaches above the roof of a house down the street from me - a mask and witch’s hat have been added for Halloween. Its kept me smiling all day. (I’m not sure if they trimmed the hedge into the elephant shape just for Halloween or if I’ve been walking by it for months and never noticed the elephant until they added the hat and mask). Here its still too early for human trick-or-treaters - I’m just hoping I get more than the 6 or so that stopped by last year.</p>
<p>Best costume I saw: someone dressed up as laundry in the laundry basket - had a laundry basket around him and assorted clothing thrown over him. Great.</p>
<p>One of my daughters was a skunk. (She always wants to be something impossible to buy and difficult to make. . .last year she was a peacock). At my kids’ elementary school they have a big Halloween parade. No scary costumes allowed. The best costume I saw there (besides the skunk, of course) was a jellyfish. The kid had a blue plastic bag that was stuffed with some pink tissue paper (I think). The bag was sealed and put on the top of his head so it puffed down around the edges like a mushroom (whenever I describe this, I have a hard time making it clear that the plastic bag was NOT over the kid’s head. . .)–then around the edges, surrounding the kid in a circle, different colored ribbons were hanging down from the bottom of the bag. Very simple, but very original. Also, there were 3 boys who did a group costume–2 of them were dressed in black, with “FBI” on their jackets and hats–and the kid in the middle had on a pinstriped suit, sunglasses–the FBI guys were holding onto his arms, dragging him along. There was another kid dressed in torn dirty clothes with a cardboard sign hanging from his neck that said “WILL WORK FOR CANDY.” </p>
<p>Every year the teachers have a “theme”–last year they were “First Ladies,” this year they were “Beauty Queens.” They all wore long gowns (mostly old bridesmaids gowns, I guess) and plastic tiaras. And each one has a sash with Miss (Something) written on it.
When I got close enough to read the sashes, I realized that they said things like Miss Demeanor, Miss Cellaneous, Miss Eltoe, Miss Spel, Miss Understood, Miss Directed, Miss Lead (the principal), etc. Very cute.</p>

<p>No trick or treaters at my house tonight, so I have to dig something out of my memories. Best costume I ever made - DD’s beanie baby black cat costume. I made a jumpsuit cat costume with a big red heart-shaped “Ty” tag attched to the ear. Amidst the beanie baby craze, DD got a pillowcase full of candy! It surely helped that DH attached plastic Barbie angel wings to our white pupppy’s back and took him trick or treating as well. H said he has never heard so many “awww” and “ooohhh” in his life!</p>
<p>H answered the door- from his descriptions, I would vote for the racing snail.
