Best/Worst Admission/Rejection Letters

Binghamton’s letter struck me as obnoxious: Congratulations on your acceptance to a PUBLIC IVY, 6TH MOST SELECTIVE PUBLIC SCHOOL IN THE NATION, MAN OUR SCHOOL FREAKING ROCKS!

What…what is this blather?

Also, everything I’ve received from Bing so far (acceptance and Scholars letter) has had the most obvious Xeroxed signature ever on it. Guh.

UChicago’s was uber cold, just like their weather.

Lehigh’s rejection was pretty well-worded…I appreciated it.

“I know you may be disappointed by this letter. Please realize that nearly 13,000 students applied for the first year class, making this the most selective pool of candidates in the history of the institution. As a result, we were forced to make very discerning distinctions among talented applicants. Competition for admission has never been keener.”

The first paragraph was pretty typical…that was the second. I may have been rejected, but I can appreciate good wording.

Villanova’s waitlist letter was typical fair.

Oberlin’s acceptance letter was totally amazing, for several reasons. First and second paragraphs:

"Dear _____:

Congratulations! We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted to Oberlin College’s class of 2012.

We saw in you the kind of person who will excel at Oberlin. Someone who is academically and socially engaged, someone curious about life, and someone ready to take intellectual risks to better yourself and the world. Your accomplishments, your passion, and your commitment to achievement make you a perfect fit for Oberlin."

Aw, shucks Oberlin, thankee! Lol, it’s so nice! And then the best part was below the type! I got a handwritten note from the the Dean of Admissions!

“P.S. _____, We are very pleased that you will continue the Oberlin legacy in your family by joining the class of 2012. Congratulations!”

Obviously because my mom went to Oberlin. It was awesome!

BC’s waitlist letter was horrible

They tell you about how they sent acceptance packages to everyone who got accepted, then tell you how your not getting one of them.

Yeah, but it was pretty obvious from the beginning of the letter (the “congrats” or “regrets” being absent) that it was a waitlist. It did feel rather cold, though.

Edit: In all fairness, the obviously real signature (blue ink, wow!) at the end was a nice change from the Xeroxes I’ve gotten from Northeastern and UMass.

I was about to say…how did you not get into Lehigh and Vill but into Oberlin? I guess legacy explains it.

Northeastern U rejection letter, very warming and made me feel like they really wanted to accept me but with 36,000 applications and only 2,800 spots they just had to make really tough decisions! Now that is what I am talking about- Very eloquent - not like GWU which flat out stated ADMISSION DENIED! A school located in the murder capital and more expensive than the IVIES - $55,000 a year.

I have to agree that BC’s waitlist letter was horrible. It was like two pages. It basically said others have been accepted and you have not, but you are on the waitlist. It went on to describe the waitlist procedures.

Oberlin’s rejection letter was pretty nice. Pretty standard, but it didn’t make me feel worthless or anything. They said it was a really competitive year and many qualified applicants weren’t accepted and encouraged me to apply as a transfer if I ever want to. They said, “I assume that you will have other fine choices and that you will move on to a happy and challenging college experience elsewhere.” And really, it’s true!

My acceptance from Bard was pretty plain, but it was in this nice red and gold mini-envelope.

Rice had the worst acceptance letter. It’s very impersonal.

Here’s the first line:

“Approved”? I would have at least liked an exclamation point…

I will also say BCs waitlist letter sucks. Granted, they printed it on real paper this time (I breathed too hard on my deferral letter and it tore) but the contents were basically as follows.

Now, I got waitlisted at Lafayette too, but it didn’t feel insincere. It said mostly the same stuff, but it didn’t come off as snooty. It said that as few as 0 kids and as many as 100something kids have been admitted from the waitlist in recent years, and to be safe you’d probably want to give the deposit to another institution, but what it basically said is “There are so many awesome people that we took already that we decided to waitlist you instead. It was hard, but we don’t have enough space for the number of qualifeid applicants this year, and another great school will take you if we don’t. Life goes on, and while we hope to see you in September, there’s a good chance we might not. Guessing who will attend and who won’t sucks, and that’s unfortunately why you’re here”.

Anyhow, Lafayette’s waitlist felt like a nice gesture while it seemed insulting from BC.

In an envelope in a box in my bedroom closet, I have all of my acceptance letters from the fall of 1975.

I got my acceptance from West Virginia University first. It was a thin letter, not a good sign. I remember the salutation, Dear Member of the Class of 1980 … That’s is all I needed to read, I knew that I woulld end up some for college.

Ohio University came about two weeks later: Dear Mr. …, The admissions committee has accepted your application to the College of Communications for the the term beginning September…

Duquesne, where I ended up going, sent their acceptance in two parts. About two weeks after I received my acceptance from OU, I got a letter is a small yellow envelope with a image of a stick figure, a stick figure of a Western Union delivery boy. The envelope said Urgent News. Inside was a mock telegram informing me that I had been accepted to the university and details were to follow. Another two weeks later, I got a certificate of acceptance along with all the other paper work. Yeah, the certificate is tacky, almost campy, but it still means alot.

Thanks for letting me share my memories.

stanford’s was cold. They don’t even send you an actual paper copy because they are being “eco friendly” aka, we you are not worth a piece of paper…lol

HAHHA LOL.
i got rejected from stanford too
and reading the eco-friendly part ****ed me off.
but then i just laughed

oh,
and berkeley’s rejection letter SUCKS!

Stanford’s rejection letter sucked. D< Eco friendly my ass.

I’m sure someone out there is impressed …

crickets

Smiths rejection was sweet…they wished me gud luck on my college career…heard uni of chicago was very encouraging. Yales rejection is the worst huh? joy…sumtin to luk forward to on march 31st

Mt.holyoke sends a nice packages…i cant wait to recieve mine:)

Stanford’s rejection letter was horrible (my gf got one this afternoon). Apparently rejects aren’t even worth an 8.5x11 piece of paper and a couple cents worth of ink, despite the fact that they paid about $200 just to apply to the school and get all the paperwork in.

“I was about to say…how did you not get into Lehigh and Vill but into Oberlin? I guess legacy explains it.”

Well actually, tons of qualified kids in my school got burned by both schools. My HS is a magnet school where tons of kids are smart enough to consider Lehigh/Villanova safeties. In past years, many kids applied and were accepted but few enrolled (26 accepted to Lehigh last year, 6 enrolled). So this year, 65 freakin’ kids applied to Lehigh from my school. They waitlisted and rejected some pretty qualified applicants, mostly, I think, because we use them as a safety and they know it, they are trying to improve their overall rating, and because they compare all of us to each other. They also knew that likely if they admitted 50 of us (duly qualified) probably only 5 - 10 would enroll. So…out of 65 pretty qualified kids, they only admitted between 10-20.

I know a kid with amazing stats who got waitlisted because of that crap. It sucks. Villanova is doing a similar though…smart kids waitlisted and rejected. I kid you not.
