Best/Worst Admission/Rejection Letters

I’m in the same boat. :D

Great thread, can we keep it going?

University of Maine’s acceptance:

Dear John,

“Congratulations! On behalf of the University of Maine, it gives me great pleasure to offer you early admission as a first-year student for the fall of 2010 to the College of Education & Human Development with a major in Secondary Education. Our decision reflects the admission committee’s belief that you have the academic ability and motivation to successfully complete this program at the University of Maine, and that your preparation is competitive with the other applicants who have been offered admission in the program. This offer of admission is contingent upon successful completion of your current academic course work and our receipt of an official final transcript from the institution you are attending.”

It’s a pretty good sized letter, 3 more paragraphs about deposits, numbers to call, checklists, etc. Also came with a personal note saying “Welcome to UMaine!”

I also got accepted to UMaine-Farmington, and their acceptance was neat.

"Dear John,

Congratulations! You have been accepted to the University of Maine Farmington for Fall 2010. As a member of Farmington Class of 2014, you will be joining a community of talented and creative classmates representing an impressive variety of interests and backgrounds. We are delighted to extend this offer of admission to you."

The admissions guy who sent the letter was really nice, I met him several times throughout my vists and first met him at a college fair. He included a hand written note about my essay, and I felt pretty bad about not necessarily turning UMF down, but turning him down. He made my college search pretty fun.

Also got accepted to Hartford. Nothing special, started with “I am delighted to inform you…” They offered me a grant, which was kind but it still costs a lot more than UMaine, where I am going to attend.

Also, UMaine and Hartford’s acceptances came in small envelopes. Hartford I thought was a rejection because it was very thin, the only paper was the acceptance. UMaine had several papers, and it had “Congratulations! You are a BLACK BEAR!” On the front. UMF came in a large packet.

Goucher’s was really nice:

“The most important day in each of Goucher College’s 125 years has always been the day we offer admission to a select number of exceptionally talented young people. Today is one of those days - and you are one of those people. On behalf of the entire Goucher community, I am delighted to congratulate you on your admission to our fall 2010 first-year class.”

The Director of Admissions actually signed the bottom, which is awesome. Also, they are giving me 15k/year.

AIB’s was really sweet, too. Their letter was quite generic, but the Director of Admissions signed the bottom in red pen, and wrote “Congrats!” on my acceptance letter, and “Well done!” on my scholarship letter.

It’s going to be really hard to turn these down. :|

On Christmas Eve, I received a purple plastic luggage tag from Agnes Scott College that said “PACK YOUR BAGS - YOU’RE IN”. It was so cute. I hung it on the Christmas tree.

U of Iowa’s was alright, just a “You’re accepted, pick housing.”
Augustana’s was super personal, they quoted my app, and wrote a handwritten letter. Then three days letter I got a magnetic white board with a handwritten note on it.

Bucknells defer. was nice too, they just told me to apply elswhere also.

That Agnes Scott one is brilliant :)

UM is amazing! Don’t have it on hand (late at night and on the other side of the house, don’t want to wake anyone up), but it isn’t so much the letter as it is the entire package. They send a huge green and orange envelope, which you’re almost sure must be junk mail because no way would anyone send an acceptance letter that blatant, but then you open it and sure enough, there it is! And then they enclose a folio, which held a wonderful scholarship surprise, along with an FAQ, telling you what forms you need, etc. The folio is almost like college junk mail, really nicely done and beautiful pictures.

Oh, and they give you coupons for when you visit campus. Like a free pass to the gym and a discount at the book store and for lunch. What a super cool, clever marketing scheme, no?

All of these awesome letters make me want to wish that it is the end of March already! I should be getting SUNY Purchase’s letter within the week (extreme academic safety, I would be in shock if I was rejected), but I doubt they would go all extravagant.

Just curious, do rejection letters come in big envelopes too or small? if they’re in small then i probably won’t even open the letter…

@elau0493: had one acceptance letter come in a small envelope because it was separate from the housing materials/etc.- not all small envelopes are bad ;-)

good luck!

I got accepted into Rutgers and they gave me a nice certificate and a pretty awesome folder. I felt like I had to frame it. XD

I got into Stony Brook yesterday and the envelope on the outside said “Small Envelope, Big News”. Their letter was really nice too.

Thanks! :)

Haha I didn’t know Rutgers was that fancy. To most New Jersey people, Rutgers is kind of mediocre. I guess they improved a lot over the years.

^ Rutgers is the safety for most NJers, but that doesn’t mean their acceptance letters can’t be fancy.

Actually, I’m from NJ and I think it’s very good. I also think it depends on what you’re going to study.

NJ has 3 colleges/universities that are the best in the state.

Princeton (of course)

Rutgers and the College of New Jersey are tied

There are a lot of other schools in NJ but they’re nothing compared to those, in my own opinion.

I’d have though College of New Jersey would be ranked below Rutgers.

Ah, but here is an interesting acceptance letter:

(imagine it being presented in a thin envelope, nothing special)
‘Dear X,
We regret to inform you that your application may have to be withdrawn from any other schools it has been sent to, given your acceptance to our college.’
Of course, a bit more eloquent. :D

Yeah Rutgers is my safety. And I’m not saying that Rutgers is bad or too poor to be fancy. I just thought they weren’t into focusing on all the fine details.
Rutgers does have its own strengths in some programs like other schools do. I’m kind of surprised that Rutgers isn’t at the same level as Princeton though. they were both established around the same time. :X

@sheep.disturber: Lol. what school is that from?

And I thought College of NJ was ranked below Rutgers too? By the way how is TCNJ?

I think TCNJ is ranked lower because it’s smaller and not as well known across the board.

Rutgers vs TCNJ reminds me of University of Virgina vs the College of William and Mary. Big school vs small college, same state.

TCNJ’s campus is very pretty and the people there seemed really nice when I went on the tour. My only problem with it is it’s kind of in the middle of no where.

Yea shame Rutgers didn’t become as prestigious as Princeton seeing as they used to play in the same athletic league. It would have been cool to have two Ivy’s in NJ

I know that UM gives you a bumper sticker, thought it was nice
