BEST/WORST Professors?

so everyone has talked about whats good and bad about cornell from dorms to party scene. so whats good/bad about what we are actually paying big bucks for- professors? for freshmen it seems no matter what school we are all in we all have the same intro courses. besides the large size that is bad how are the professors. which professors give the most work? which grade the hardest? what is the class or professor most freshman love or dread to have? anything else related please comment on. if anyone wants to break it down by schooll or major thats good also.

worst professor: Carl Hopkins

can you extend why he is? and everyone else do that with the pofessor or class you list

Best So Far: Paul Chirik (Chem 207)
Cindy van Es (AEM 210)

Pretty Good: John Abowd (Econ 101)
Pedro Perez (AEM 120, 121, 220)

I love Pedro…there’s a facebook group about him.

Best…Jefferson Cowie (ILRCB100)
Pedro Perez (AEM 220)

Worst…Prof Harrison (BioEE278)…boring and monotoned…it was torture going to his 9:05.

Nicest…Maria Terrell (Math112)

I totally disagree with bball. Prof Hopkins is a good professor. I have not really had a bad professor here at Cornell, but a few of the TAs are a bit difficult to understand, especially those with thick accents.

i’ve had some awesome profs thus far:

highlights of the best include:

Illeen DeVault (ILRCB100) - she gives brilliant lectures. Her papers are very tough (the mean last semetser was like a C- for the first paper) and the reading is very heavy, but a very rewarding class none the less. I’d totally take it over again.

Michael Evan Gold (ILRCB201) - clearly one of the hardest professors at Cornell, but his lectures are fascinating and he has really found a way to make undergraduates “think like a lawyer.” Just look out, the mean grade on his papers is usually around a 30/100.

the only one who i didnt like very much:

Paul Velleman (ILRST212) - his lectures were just very confusing and a waste of time. However, his book and software are fantastic and do a fine job of teaching the course for him.

To the OP: you may want to check out www.ratemyprofessors.com. I just found out that the main service is now free (it used to cost a couple of bucks). As regards Prof. Hopkins, someone on that site claimed to have learned techniques to stay awake in his class:D

does anyone know any god Engineering professors???

also…how big do engineering classes tend to get?

I always knew that Cornell was an excellent school, but since when does God teach at Cornell? =P

i obviously meant good!

a typographical error

Of course he knew, but it’s amusing to poke fun ;)

Any good history profs? I think Sparty once said something about one Mr. Holquist.

i think god teaches at every university through every professor lol

Since we’re talking about god, Paul Chirik is the god of chemistry. Chem 207 was awesome. The class was not easy, but his lectures were great, his tests were fair, and I really enjoyed the class.

Bball, I disagree about Carl Hopkins. While his lectures were not as exciting as Chem 207, he’s a good teacher and his tests were fair. He made a real effort to get to know students outside of the lecture hall, and had dinner discussions every week at which he invited guest professors to come and talk. Yeah, the group discussions in the lecture hall didn’t really work, but he tried to increase interaction and get students talking.

Also, if you could argue an alternative answer for an exam, he would gladly accept it. . .so if you got the wrong answer from a valid way of thinking, then you could argue your line of thinking and get credit if it made sense. It only happened to me once, but on any given test there were about 4 questions with alternate answers accepted.

It sounds like you have a grudge against him for other reasons than his ability to teach. No, he’s not my favorite professor, but to call him the worst is a huge exageration.

well, i really liked my 3 other professors, and he was clearly the worst for me…it is an opinion, actually there was something that added to this

i had a problem w. my clicker, where the first half of my clicker responses weren’t recorded, and i told him about it, i showed up to every lecture and got almost all of them right, he had no sympathy, and told me to forget about it…that was really annoying

wow so that one little incident made you call him the worst?

whats a clicker???

That doesn’t mean he’s a bad teacher, bball, it means he’s an ass.

The clicker questions are practically worth nothing. And if your clicker doesn’t work, you’re supposed to inform the TA so that he or she can disregard your scores on the clicker questions until you get a new clicker.

bball, you said you missed a few questions during one lecture, which represents about a few questions out of over a hundred questions from a total of 14*3 = 42 lectures. The questions you missed probably represented 0.1% of your final grade, which ultimately wouldn’t be a deciding factor.

Heh, I hope no profs read this.
