The “Breaking Bad” spinoff starring Bob Odenkirk starts tonight at 10 PM on AMC, with a second episode scheduled for the show’s actual time slot on Monday at 10. The advance reviews have ranged from very good to excellent. The NY Times says :
Oh, good–I was hoping someone would start a thread on this. I love Saul, Mike and Huell.
I only recently binged on Breaking Bad and I can safely say it is the best show I have ever seen–by far. The writing, the character development, the acting, the details, the way it’s shot…all brilliant.
Tonight I will be making the rather abrupt switch from Downton Abbey at 8 to Better Call Saul at 9.
@sally305, I dumped Downton for “The Walking Dead” last week - they’re both on at 9:00 pm here. Although I do love the Granthams, they are no match for zombies and Daryl Dixon!
Very happy with the first episode! I don’t know how many people watching are unfamiliar with BB, but I do think “Better Call Saul” could stand on its own. It’s just a lot of fun to see those parallels. Saul beating on the trash basket of course made me remember Walt beating on the paper towel dispenser - loved that.
The stakes aren’t as high for Saul as they were for Walt in the pilot episode of BB, but I don’t mind a slower start and don’t expect any other show to resonate emotionally with me the way BB did. Bob Odenkirk’s performance was excellent, I thought; there was a lot of depth and I could see where that brazen obnoxiousness came from. Some critics hadn’t liked the brother subplot with Michael McKean, but that, so far, is my favorite aspect of this new show.
I loved the opening to this pilot episode. It really set the tone for the telling of Saul’s story and I can’t wait for tonight’s episode. I knew we’d see Mike in the series from the promos but was surprised to see another BB character so soon.
