I feel like admissions has really now jumped the shark…
Yeah, I didn’t predict it before reading it just now, but I think at this point I am just numb to this sort of thing. Like my internal reaction was basically, “Oh, right, of course they would.”
One more thing to separate a fool and his money … with the added “benefit” of getting people riled up in the process. Ugh. What a sad commentary on society.
I really worry about S21 potentially getting addicted to these apps. One of my D’s banking co-workers took time off to go to a six week gambling addiction treatment program. Which is great he sought help, but sad nonetheless.
The third installment of the National Survey on Gambling Attitudes and Gambling Experiences (NGAGE 3.0) shows that nearly 20 million American adults report experiencing at least one problematic gambling behavior “many times” in the past year. This represents a decrease from 27.5 million in 2021, but remains elevated compared to 2018 levels.
The public health implications of this all are VERY real.. the ease of access of betting, and the risk/reward, etc. is REALLY hard to overcome and/or stop. I would try to reduce legality of a lot of this, even knowing can’t ban it all practically. (Can we at least stop the ads non-stop?).
Ugh, yes. You can tell people who bet (with more than just ‘fun’ money) that the only way these companies exist is because they make money as everyone is paying a vig built in to the odds PLUS the vast majority of the customers lose money…but most don’t want to hear that. It seems so simple, but addictive predisposition/behavior is real and these apps really prey on that.
The biggest hurdle to this is that some firms, like Polymarket, operate offshore, making them difficult or impossible to regulate or enforce US laws against.
Even within the US, markets like Kalshi operate as CFTC-regulated derivatives (futures) exchanges rather than traditional betting markets, and are therefore not subject to gambling laws.
This is unfortunately yet another evil that technology has brought upon us.
yeah, totally true. I very specifically said “reduce” – even if we can’t get rid of all of it and some we can NOT … we seem to make stuff easier and easier. (online state lottery tickets?). Plus the fact sports on TV are FILLED with ads for betting (and can only imagine the algorithms on youtube and insta etc, for the target demographic, which is not me, I am too old I am sure!)
I am imagine the companies they solid data that show those ads work, one thing they are good at it data analytics and mobile tracking:) hahahaha
Anyway, I am not trying to roll-back legalized pot, for instance, which also has negative public health sides, but has some positives on CJ/incarceration sides from what I can see, and for state coffers etc. This Kalshi stuff just has too much downside IMO.. but losing battle I think.
