BFA Acting Class of 2023: preparation, prescreens, auditions, questions and support

@theater7 congratulations! Rutgers and Michigan are so different! It will all come down to feel about a true, deep, conservatory training program vs something a bit more open. Also one lingering question we’ve had is whether SMTD at UMich is more focused toward music than theater at the end of the day. But they are both fabulous programs. If your S feels good about the conservatory approach, Kevin Kittle (Rutgers) is by all accounts an amazing teacher.

Thank you @actorparent1 I will pm you!

Wow, and then comes the moment that puts it all in perspective. S’s talent management company emailed and he is booking his first paid film role! It’s a little one, a one-day shoot, but still a really neat feeling for him, I can tell. It is a reminder that all of the “yes” and “no” answers from college are just stops on the way to the real goal, which is for him to throw himself into the work he loves and have fun performing. Very useful perspective.

@MomMimi Congrats! So awesome on the booking! That’s the best! To get paid to work and have fun!

My D was waitlisted yesterday from NYU. She was not very upset as this was not high on her list at this point. She will be releasing a bunch of schools tomorrow. I will note them here.

@MomMimi Congrats to your S! A great reminder of the big picture as this is where they are all headed.
My D made her professional on stage debut at 10, was the only kid in the play (got a whooping $300 first paycheck!). Oh man, it allowed me to see up close and truly appreciate what it takes to give birth to a professional production, the true artistry and professionalism of everyone, and the amazing bonds that developed and still carry over. Supporting our kiddos in this path is truly special and a privilege as is the art they create.

My son is at Rutgers ! It’s an amazing program but very intense - theatre 24/7. If that’s your s , it is a great choice. Plus they go into city and see theatre on weekends . Great kids! Good luck . Pm if you’d like.

@Notmommarose My D loved her Callback Weekend at Rutgers!

@grapesofwrathdad , my daughter asked me not to post her acceptances on Facebook. The school’s very competitive and a lot of kids are getting some painful rejections. Some of the schools around here have a “rejection wall” where kids post their rejections (names blacked out). She said one of the things that helped her deal with her own rejections were the rejections of others.

So, yeah, I think posting a ton of acceptances on your page isn’t cool. I know kids get very excited, but a lot of kids are dealing with crushed dreams and big disappointments. And not all kids have ideal parents, I know of cases where the parents are pretty awful to their kids when they don’t get into a particular school. You don’t want your kid to inadverdantly feed into one of those situations.

@starystarynight The psychology behind posting rejections anonymously on a “rejection wall” is interesting. It helps me understand why the CC community has been such a comfort to even long-time lurkers like me.

@Starrystarrynight just last week I was telling my S about my experience as a college senior, when the whole crew of us posted every one of our rejection letters (for grad school or job applications) on the wall of the hallway lounge in our senior dorm. It was a high-achieving school and my classmates were amazing - somehow seeing that rejections happened to everyone, even them, made it a little easier when I got those thin envelopes in the mail. At our school it wasn’t cool to post the acceptances - just the rejections.

@MomMimi Interesting. I admit I didn’t understand why it was a tradition at my D’s school, but then you realize just how many, many rejections these kids get. Some adults were amazed by how well a friend of D’s was handling her rejections. Friend told them that theatre teaches you how to deal with rejection. So, there you go, another useful lesson from drama.

Has a final decisions thread been started? I love reading those. Congratulations to everyone for making it through the application, audition, waiting, and results periods. Now for the decision! I actually lost more sleep during the decision period than any other. I think because it was my S’s decision and (after setting up and going on visits with him), there wasn’t much I could do. I very much had my opinion, but he needed to feel it. That was very hard.

One last piece of advice-- set your decision day for a day before May 1 in case you have a computer mishap. Your offer terminates after May 1-- you don’t want to miss it.

Here is the final decision thread. Nobody has posted yet.

My D just released her spot at University of the Arts, Hartt, Point Park, and Drew University.

Has anyone had any luck asking for more money from NYU Tisch Drama? or sitting in to observe some acting classes?

@love2share - of course, it never hurts to ask… but in past years, Tisch has not allowed accepted students to sit in on classes. Their reasoning has been the logistics of the 6 studios etc…

Hello everyone! It’s great to see movement on acceptances and people releasing schools. Did anyone attend UNCSA Accepted Students weekend? I heard Bob Krakower gave an On Camera workshop that was very well received. If anyone has any questions, I am more than happy to share our experience.

My son released one admittance and one wait list yesterday. After about an hour, I finally broke down and helped him with the wording. “Your performing program is fantastic and I am and honored and thankful for your offer of admission. After much consideration of my options, I have decided to attend another school. You may remove me from your roster of admitted students/wait list”.

FWIW, my son is wait listed at his top two choices. He’s hoping that others begin releasing their spots at schools that have been eliminated from consideration. Good luck to all!

D committed to The Theatre School at DePaul last night! Thrilled to be joining the family @loudclappingmom @Atreuh @actingdreams !
