BFA Acting Class of 2023: preparation, prescreens, auditions, questions and support

@morgan830 did it come in the mail?

@collegeadmiss email to check portal

I love reading and have learned much from the final decisions threads. Even if you are just a lurker, if you have already made your decision, please write your story on the 2023 Final Decisions Background thread! A lot of people benefit from these and we want to share in your happiness.

My D is not there yet. She is down to two choices that are very different. We have a bicoastal trip planned for next week that should greatly help her decide. Then there are the three waitlists…

Anyone know when Tisch waitlisted students might start to hear anything? Thanks!

Has anyone heard anything other than “you’re in” from Boston Conservatory? We only have that email. I would love to know if there is any $ coming. We checked on the portal and didn’t see anything. TIA

@lakadk - Are you looking for financial aid or merit aid? I would think if you applied for FA, there should be a communication- even if it’s to say you do get anything. If you are hoping for merit, no news is probably bad news. But I would call if I were you.

Hey Class of 2023… can you tell me which schools (in your own experience) offered most attractive package of merit or talent aid for a BFA program? I have a friend who asked for next year as they will be hard up to afford college and we didn’t apply to enough colleges last year to give her more than a couple of ideas. Here in high COL Southern Cal with massive house payments we none of us “look” as poor as we feel… so merit aid is usually the best we can hope for. :expressionless:

@CaMom13 For us it was DePaul (Theatre School). First they don’t charge a university application fee, we only paid $50 audition fee. Everyone who is accepted for Acting receives a talent scholarship between $15K-$30k, renewable every year (as long as you meet min gpa, standard stuff). It made a huge difference for us (besides the strength of the program). We didn’t know about this until the audition info session. They also have a great 9 or 12-month payment plan so it will make it possible for us to have no loans. I am lucky to be able to move my job to Chicago, which is in the works, so D can live at home (her desire too) and I can attend performances, yay!

^One more thing, not 100% sure yet and will confirm at orientation but the way I read the tuition info, looks like we are locked in for the same tuition amount every year, which is another huge plus.

Super helpful @NYDreammom, thanks! DePaul would be a deam school for this kid… well, for a lot of people. :wink:

@CaMom13 Webster, Baldwin Wallace, Marymount and pace (still pricey!) all offered generous merit scholarships. D didn’t get into pace or Webster but still offered good merit.
BW and Marymount are our contenders.
She made iit into Roosevelt and ccm but money was soooo little, they couldn’t be contenders for us because as a single mom, $$ is a huge factor!
Point park also offered great money. She was redirected to BA but very generous offer.

Forgot to mention that on the academic side Montclair offered in-state tuition for having 3.5 GPA or higher.

@CaMom13 I don’t know if this is the norm, but my D got very large scholarships from Carnegie and NYU, making them both VERY inexpensive. She also has very generous packages from Pace and Marymount. Shenandoah gave the least amount of aid, making it the most expensive out of all of her acceptances.

@CaMom13 Elon offers Merit & Fellows Scholarship, as well as a full-ride Odessy Scholarship, making it very affordable.

Wow @Gapyearguru - that’s honestly the first time I’ve ever heard of people thrilled with their packages from Carnegie and NYU! :smiley: So very happy for her!!! Not to be too nosy but can you check and see how much of that was merit-only? I just don’t trust the FAFSA/CSS calculations resulting in any aid for people here - our incomes and assets always look high to anyone not in CA/NYC.

@CaMom13 I was only referring to merit aid/scholarships, not the loan packages.

@LusbyMom - thank you but I’m curious about that info - from what I see (and remember from last year) Elon is pretty pricey. Like 36K a year plus 14K room and board and the presidential and performing arts scholarships are only 6K. It looks to me (maybe I am wrong) that the Odyssey full-ride is a competition and financial need is part of the equation. The Fellows grants are like 12K but that still puts the annual cost (if you get one) at 38K. Am I seeing that wrong? My D was accepted to Elon (BA) and it came in last on our list of “BA bargains” when the merit aid was deducted from the cost.

@Gapyearguru - let me PM you. :slight_smile:

@CaMom13 - same problem with us - on paper it looks like we have more money than we do, so our EFC is HIGH. Have your friend look at Wright State. It’s not talked about much on the Acting thread, but they gave our older D (she was MT) talent scholarship money making it the equivalent of in-state tuition. The school has set parameters for merit, so you can see up front how much your student is eligible for generally. D1 had a good ACT score, but her GPA was just under what she needed (at the time - could be different now) for really good scholarship money. The Acting program there is very strong, and if they want to, Acting majors can take extra voice and dance. It’s a fantastic program. Also well-known for being affordable - Texas State.

Excellent suggestions @MTmom2017 - thank you!
