BFA Acting Class of 2023: preparation, prescreens, auditions, questions and support

@gidamom I’m probably responding too late to be of help, but my daughter is a freshman in Elon’s acting program. PM me if you want to chat & I’ll provide my email address (not on CC very often these days).

S is in NYC this weekend for Accepted Students/Spring Preview at Fordham Lincoln Center. He is thrilled to have gotten into his top choice and is loving Lincoln Center. With S’s invitation to attend this weekend’s event, a stipend to cover travel expenses was extended as well as connecting him with a host theatre student that he could stay with in the dorms. This was too good of a deal to pass up, so S traveled solo from Texas to attend. We are blessed that he was given a very generous talent scholarship and he was told today that he would be receiving an additional scholarship as his financial aid package was “in committee”. S has a lot of other options and a few with full rides that would cost us $0, but the opportunities that lie with just being in NYC and Fordham’s track record as boasting the most graduates represented on Broadway, is something we can’t let our S pass up. I can’t wait to hear all about his trip when he returns tomorrow!

@MomMimi - students at Tisch do audition outside Tisch. Freshman can’t audition for NYU shows and are discouraged from auditioning elsewhere but they don’t own you. The studios have a very strict attendance policy but if his outside work can be done on non-studio days, weekends and holidays… I honestly don’t think anyone will know or care.

My daughter is a freshman and has been in three one-acts and Shakespeare in the Square this year. Many of her friends have been in shows with various groups. They audition for things on-campus and off. They just cannot miss any of their studio days.

@CaMom13 @2ndGradeTeacher Thank you both so much! I may PM with some follow-up questions. I am an NYU alum secretly rooting for S to choose Tisch, so want to make sure all his questions are answered!!!

Hello! My son has narrowed his options to BFA Acting at Illinois Wesleyan or Otterbein University. We’re seeking input. Thank you!

@morgan830 My son did the admitted student visit at BW and, as a result, has removed it from his finalist list. Message me if you’d like more information.

@InputNeeded I can’t seem to message your for some reason. My d did the same overnight and enjoyed it very much. Would love to hear your thoughts but I can’t message you.

@morgan830 I’m not sure why either! Perhaps because I only joined today - maybe I’m not fully “approved” or something.

@InputNeeded yes… I think you have to have a certain number of posts ??‍♀️

@morgan830 Am I allowed to send you my e-mail address? Not sure if that’s OK or not!

@InputNeeded I got it to work. Check your messages

@InputNeeded - you can also post 10 more times and the messaging restriction will be removed.

@MomMimi - I am a Tisch mom too - and happy to answer questions

For those still trying to choose, I’d like to share a piece of advice my sister gave my BFA Acting son:

Rather than thinking of each school’s strengths, think which has an aspect(s) you can’t live without. Picture yourself at each, and consider regret. For example, if your options in a restaurant were steak or halibut. Which would you regret not choosing more? Although my son was lucky enough to have awesome options, we found that no school was #1 in every aspect. This exercise helped solidity his thoughts. And he chose well!

Also, be careful that your student’s choice is not influenced by social media, but by their own careful evaluation of what they want/need. Some schools push their FB or Instagram groups more than others, and of course we talk and share on CC. All of this is fun. But these groups do not provide accurate comparisons of the schools. Schools which are not well represented in these media may be a better match for your student than ones with a major “presence” online. I’ve mentioned this before, but this is the time to be keenly aware. The curriculum, the professors, the students, and the “fit” your student feels when on campus are key. The best match for someone else’s student may not be the best match for yours. We are not lemmings. ; )

My poor kid is in Wait List Hell. Can’t get excited about existing acceptances, because oh so close to three really great programs. If anybody out there has programs that can be released… thanks.

D just got notified that she got accepted to SUNY Purchase off the waitlist! We’re in NYC right now, having just visited NYU Tisch, Pace, and LIU Post. And Rutgers/Mason Gross is in her top 4 as well. Now, we’re trying to see if we can squeeze in a visit to SUNY Purchase while we’re in NY! Not sure if we can…or if it’s worth changing our return flight.

Wow, @love2share!!! Another wonderful option! Congratulations! I can’t wait to read your “final decision” story!!!

@love2share congrats! That is so exciting - I’m so hoping that you can squeeze it in, because my guess is that option could save some tuition dollars in the future. What a wonderful set of choices for your talented D! On our side, we are waiting for one more waitlist to finish out our set of choices and let us get to a final decision, and that school seems to be heavily recruiting S even though there is no actual “yes” yet – so we are in a sense of bewilderment, but hoping to have clarity soon.

@actorparent1 and @MomMimi Thank you so much! D is getting very stressed, as there hasn’t been a clear winner…probably because her top 4 choices are so different from each other. We’re going to see what we can do to visit SUNY Purchase while we’re here in NYC…probably will try to stay one extra day. After I get back, I’ll share a re-cap of each of our school visits.

@MomMimi How wonderful that a school is heavily recruiting your S while he’s on the waitlist. That means a lot!
