He wants to work in Marketing and would like to work in publicity first then opening his own consulting firm
Either - affordability, then fit.
Likely any school can work.
Did he look at Babson ?
No, he did not looked at Babson. While doing our research it did not came out in the top ranked in Marketing.
In terms of business/marketing, the two schools will be very similar. I note that Indiana is very well regarded for dance and music, also. So, if your son intends to continue dancing, or playing the violin, Indiana might provide great opportunities.
I think he will keep dancing and music as EC but he would like to minor in Italian and intends to apply for a term abroad (or a year if that exists)
Babson is perennially #1 for entrepreneurship which I why I mentioned.
Personally for your student, I don’t think #1 or #71 will matter. Marketing is a ‘soft’ major but getting more data intensive than year’s past - which is good. He may also have interest in PR classes or a minor given the interest in publicity - usually in the communications school. You might check opportunities for classes there as well
If you have target firms in mind, you can check their employees LinkedIn to see if any schools come up, but I think after visiting, whichever seems best for your student is what you choose - if affordable. Both are large but Kelley very much so. Not sure the size of marketing in each. IU is in a town. UW a small but real city.
Good luck
Thank you very much for the advise! Both the quality of the program/university prestige matters to us as it is an important investment. He will take a look at LinkedIn.
Kindest regards,
Quality is hard to measure. Prestige doesn’t necessarily mean quality and low rank doesn’t mean non quality.
My undergrad was tops in its field and not quality. My MBA lower ranked by choice - they paid me to go. And excellent quality.
Does your home country recognize either name ?
Like I said both fine names but given his interests - I think either (and many others) would work.
If you don’t get Kelley - easy choice. Sometimes that helps.
But I hope he gets in and can visit. One will stand out. I turned down IU for my MBA but the four times I’ve been on campus over 25 years - I gotta admit I love it. Beautiful school.
Good luck !!
Any body have thoughts on how Ohio State Fisher compares to Virginia Tech and UTK and Umiami business schools?
Happy to report OOS/DS24 / was admitted from the deferred list to Penn State UP campus DUS … the joy on his face will stay with me forever…
Well prepared via dual enrollment business pathway, AP classes, 2 year part time job and varsity sports for Big 10 business school, Supply Chain.
He was admitted earlier to MSU (awaiting Broad) and IU (awaiting Kelley)… Deferred from CU-Boulder, UT-K and OSU (dream school)…denied UMich and Wisco… and likely UT Austin tonight… but that’s OK… He’s either in at OSU via RD or in at PSU University Park… either way, I’m feeling grateful this crazy process is nearly over. Only made affordable via my transferable Post 9/11 GI bill. Thank you all for the moral support and emotional backstop these past few months…
Best of luck to your kiddos… He’ll jump on OSU Fisher if it comes through… I’ll report back later and I’ll buy the first round for you Buckeyes if we get to see you in Columbus.
In case you were not aware, OSU is in-state tuition for children of Veterans by state law - not the GI bill, a separate state lae, even after your gi benefits might run out. You can check this out on the veterans page at OSU. The discussion is a bit confusing so write to them if you have questions.
Major ? Cost concerns ?
Four different environments. All excellent reps.
Thanks for that intel… a recent 2017? law made it mando for schools to charge “in state” tuition to the VA for OOS applicants using their GI bill / Post 9/11 benefits…and you’re right… most that I’ve run across will allow you to continue paying in state fees even if your benefits run out or split them between kids… so I’ll pay a little out of pocket in his senior year, but at the in state rate…
Congrats!!! That’s amazing news!!!
Well I just found this thread (thanks to one of you who linked it on the IU Kelley thread. My son is interested in business, but not yet 100%. He has direct admission to IU Kelley, Purdue, Iowa, and UIUC (but in ACES on a business-esq major, not Gies). He’s been deferred from Michigan. In the non Big 10 realm he’s been accepted to South Carolina (Darla) and Florida State (no direct admit) and a few others.
Right now the top choices are IU, Purdue, UIUC or Florida State (Bright Futures so free tuition). We will be hitting admitted students days for the 3 Big 10 options in March. Don’t hear much talk here about Purdue, but we’ve also been quite impressed so far based on our research. Can’t wait for him to see them all up close to see which one grabs him.
Free Florida State would be hard to pass up. A lot of great options though if he really wants to go further away from home.
Yes, it is quite a deal…and yet it’s not a lock, we have a few reservations. Cost will be considered, but not the main factor. He’s also applied to Florida and would also have free tuition if he was accepted. That one might be strong enough to keep him in-state but we don’t find out until 2/23 and it’s very competitive for admissions.
Well Purdue will be cheapest of the Big 10- outside of FSU. It’s a very nice campus - as is FSU - but colder. U of SC with merit - will be cost effective too.
What major in business is he interested in? Purdue has some interesting ones.
Which major at UIUC.
I do agree - FSU is very solid and from an ROI, may be hard to beat but not everyone is budget driven. UF is obviously becoming more well known but I know several from TN who chose FSU over UF. I don’t think it’s uncommon.
Have fun on your trip(s) and let us know how the visits go.
The major is up in the air a bit. He’s interested in economics, accounting, finance and possibly supply chain, but like many 17 year olds he doesn’t really know enough about each to really know. Illinois ACES major is environmental economics (they also have Ag Accounting etc.). He has some interest in environmental policy as well.
Really not a bad name.
The hard schools would likely be better in life - even if goes a policy way.
Good luck whatever he decides. You certainly didn’t list a bad school.
Hopefully the visits will clear a lot up.
It’s funny - many are leaving Illinois and going south to school - over 1500 to Bama alone. So you are ‘potentially’ returning the favor ![]()
