Hello! I’ve noticed lots of the same names popping up on various big 10 early action threads and thought this might be a nice way for all of us to connect. And I think it will also help future years that are evaulating whether a school is a match, as there is a wide range of selectivity within the Big 10. If you are like our family … you have noticed a lot of similarities among the Big 10 undergrad business programs, as well as some differences. I am super interested to see which sets of schools everyone applied to!
Please note that I could only add 10 tags, so I did not mean to slight Nebraska, Northwestern, Maryland and Rutgers, which are also Big 10 schools. I simply ran out of room.
Please post your state of residence, major, stats if you feel comfortable, to which school(s) you applied (feel free to add non-Big 10), and applications status. I’m hoping that once decisions start coming in we can use this thread to discuss and weigh the various options. Good luck to all!
I’ll get started:

May add a couple east coast private schools for RD.
The direct admit program for Broad at MSU was new for last year (high school class of 23). They ran a small pilot the year before. Previously, one could only apply into business after completing certain prerequisites on campus. This is still the path at many schools, such as Smeal at Penn State. I am glad they started offering a direct admit path at MSU, as S24 is only looking at direct admit schools. But that timing is tough … he will (hopefully*) have heard from every other school before he hears about Broad direct admit. So it’s hard for him to get too pumped about MSU right now.
*I’m hoping these schools don’t defer huge numbers to regular decision (and then waitlist). I don’t know quite how all that works for direct admit though. I’m guessing most business spots fill up in EA. Does a deferral mean no direct admit?
I agree that MSU timing is tough as kids will start to lock in mentally to other early action admissions. The 2nd round being in early April really does not make sense. I appreciate Indiana’s transparency related to qualifications for DA.

We offered 1 OOS school to visit which was Wisconsin and that’s the #1, but found out yesterday 68000 applications so not optimistic. He just got deferred from TCU and SC…so our choices may be MSU, Pitt, or Indiana. Pitt is only B school he got direct admit. We await MSU and Indiana. He got most money from MSU, some from Indiana. Roadtripping in the winter to see these 3 doesn’t seem like the best way to see them…any suggestions? We thought we were smart waiting for admissions decisions to see where before we spent money on visits and with a super busy soccer season we really couldn’t have through the fall anyhow. He’s discouraged with the recent defers mostly because he’s in his head over Wisconsin. He’s also burnt out from all of it and just wants a decision.
I hear you! This process just takes so long!
S24 is likely also deciding between MSU & IU. He’s direct at Kelley with no $ so far, and in at MSU with $. Kelley is in the top spot right now. We will hear from WI, IL and MD in a month. Based on numbers, all are reaches. Only RD app is to Syracuse. I think it looks like a target on paper, but school counselor says a reach. I suspect she has more info than I do!
D24 did not apply to TCU and USC, but lots of his friends did. It seems like TCU took a lot of kids in ED but deferred or denied all of the EA kids around here. SC also deferred a ton. I feel bad because these kids were all thinking these schools were a match. Maybe they all get in later (and these schools are just gaming the process), but it just brings sadness now. I kinda think that’s what Kelley’s doing. I think they will end up admitting a large percentage of the petitioners, but they will wait to do it.
I don’t know if you want to wait this long, but MSU’s admitted student day is April 6. We went to a Green and White day this summer, and they do a fantastic job of pulling out all the stops on these big days. Hopefully by then, we will have heard about Broad direct admission.
Kelly hasn’t even announced its direct admit days.
I’m not sure MSU or Indiana is particularly easy to get to by plane. At least Wisconsin and Pitt you could fly in and out.
Yes - my concern is that SC basically stated that they didn’t look at applications due to high volume. Their pre-decision email said acceptance is based on above average performance; all essays and extracurriculars will be considered in deferred status. My S24 stats (and test optional) make us dependent on the whole picture inclusive of essays, etc. so thinking he will get deferred in January as well.
It may be ok to see even in winter to know what it is like during that season. Indiana is relatively mild for the Midwest but I suppose it depends on where you are coming from. My older son is at IU and loves it. Honestly I think IU and MSU are better business schools than Wisconsin. Wisconsin it just one of those “it” schools right now. I also think some thought should be put in to where you want to live after college and where companies recruit.
Yes agreed on IU! We just aren’t sure he’ll get Kelley DA, we are looking at what an Econ major there might look like though…the campus and experience looks tremendous. We have a whole lot of family pushing for Michigan St…and we love our midwest family : ) plus appreciate the OOS scholarship. We shall see.
Thanks for the Intel…on admit days! We’ll be roadtripping as road warriors…my husband is from Michigan so we drive everywhere. He already has a spring break planned…so thinking we will be making a couple little trips.
39w gpa TO. Virginia student. Got into Ohio state fisher as a direct admit, which has a top 15 undergrad business school. Got into Indiana but waiting to hear from Kelley petition. Waiting to hear from Wisconsin. Got into university of Oregon direct admit too. Leaning towards Ohio state right now
DS24 has his heart set on OSU… 3.8W T/O OOS … Fisher Supply Chain Logistics …he spent (2) weeks this past summer on campus for a Personal Financial enrichment class called Buckeye Pre-college… dorm, meals, classes and a PHD Prof letter of rec… we’re deferred at PSU and UTK, accepted MSU; Oregon ; U of Arkansas and ASU…good luck to all! Happy New Year !
Hi everybody! How are you all doing on this final wait?
Am I right that all Big10 business will be out by next Friday?!
I have WI, IL and MD all predicted to come out then. And someone recently said MI, too. And is OSU still this Friday?
Our S24 update - in at MSU (still waiting Broad) and IU (Kelley direct admit). Waiting on WI, IL, MD. Ended up not applying anywhere else. I don’t have any idea what is going on in S24’s head. He seems to be all in at Kelley/IU. I can’t tell if that’s because he knows WI and IL are long shots and he doesn’t want to get his hopes up, or if he really has already decided. We’ll find out next week, I guess…
Or not, because WI is known for deferrals. If my memory is correct, MD does not defer, so he will get a real answer. And while IL defers some, historically it communicates with the high school counselors to let them know how many have been deferred so that kids can make informed decisions.
