Big Snowstorm Headed for Northeast

mstee- right now there’s still a travel ban in Massachusetts. Hopefully it will be lifted by tonight. Anyone without power right now may remain in the dark for a few days. Crews simply can’t get around.

The local news just did a story about plow operators who can’t plow because they’re still trying to dig themselves out!

For those wondering what the big deal about this storm is, it’s not the two feet of snow. We’ve seen that before. The problem is that the snow fell so quickly and the wind was blowing the drifts around so much that the plows couldn’t keep up. The MA travel ban has been enormously effective and despite the fact that this is shaping up to be a top-5 storm the news is notable for a lack of stories about yahoos getting stuck in places they shouldn’t be or getting hurt doing things they shouldn’t be doing.

Our area got about 24-26 inches but it is still coming down. It is definitely hard to keep up with all the blowing snow so I sympathize with all the road crew. Don’t how much has accumulated outside our garage doors. Our dog has not gone out since yesterday afternoon but is happy as can be. As long as he can sleep he doesn’t care. I wouldn’t be surprised if some day he ends up with a bladder infection. When it snows or rains, he’d rather stay inside and no matter how much you push he rather hold it. Silly goose.

It’s bad when plows are stuck. I don’t know when I’ll get out, tried to clean off porch to take dog out and snow was so heavy and wet, I didn’t get far.

Between Boston and Providence here with at least 2 feet of snow and it’s still coming down and blowing. About to head out to shovel/snowblow. I think DD14 and I will be trying to shovel the top lighter snow off so DH can hopefully snowplow the bottom heavy stuff. We still have power also as our town does a good job and doesn’t use the big power companies whose towns always seem to go out! However, most of DD’s friends live in towns without power. Wishing we had DS11 here to help out but he’s at school and doing fine there I assume as they didn’t have as much snow out in western MA.

One foot in Southern NH. I cleared off part of the driveway this morning. Clearing last night made it a little easier. One of my neighbors already moved their cars out and back. I think that I could go out if I wanted to - there’s only two-three inches on the road. The snow is very light here. I read that most of the power outages (650K were in MA and RI).

I need to go out and do some more clearing and then figure out how the highways are.

BTW, Governor Hassan asked motorists to be off the roads by 7 last night. No need for a travel ban.

I need to check on relatives in MA.

My sister near New Bedford, Mass. lost power last night–it’s 50 degrees in her kitchen now and the power company says they aren’t even going to try to predict when power might come back. She also has a tree leaning on her house. She said the snow was very wet and heavy when it first started yesterday–now it’s light and fluffy.

Around 30" east of Hartford. We were in that band that was getting 3-4"/hour of snow. The drift blocking my front door is around 4’ high. DH plans to take today and tomorrow to clear us out. Even with a snow blower, this will take some time. Fortunately, no power outage.

S1 in Boston just called. He’s a severe weather buff so he loved this. He could tell by watching the radar last night that we were getting killed. He and his gf walked the ~2 miles to Boston Common so they could see Jim Cantore (and Al Roker). I wish he would’ve called to tell us so we could try to see him on TV, but he said he didn’t think they were getting on camera.

They’re talking about a warm-up now and the flooding effects of that. Oy vey. Stay safe everyone. Mother Nature really seems to have it out for you this year :(

34 inches here

Another round of shoveling and I cleared off the car. I’ll have to work on the roof this afternoon. Just one side of it where the snow drifted to. I didn’t check the front roof but I’m pretty sure that I won’t have to do anything there. Snow plow came by and we have pavement (and a little packed snow ~ 1/2 inch maybe). Some people came out early to dig out and some are digging out right now.

My two gyms are closed right now. I’m going to call them later to see if they open later in the day. If not I might run to the office for a workout. I’ve never done a run in the snow before but that’s a slippery option too.

There doesn’t seem to be an official measurement for my town, but the towns around me are reporting 24"-30".

The poor guy across the street from me is on the outside of the curve, and wound up with a plow wall that was about 4 feet (!) tall. He has a large snowblower and has been at it for over an hour.

Speaking of dogs . . . I made mine go out last night to pee and he disappeared. Not as in “got lost in the blizzard,” but as in the snowdrift by the door was deeper than the dog was tall. He was not amused.

Not an issue today because I can’t even get the doors open. Handy to have kids at home when this happens - they think it’s fun to climb out a window with a snow shovel!

I’ve never used a snow-blower before but wouldn’t it be easier to use a shovel to get the height down and then use the snow-blower?

BC, be very careful. I slipped on the ice last night and I sprained part of my foot. My whole body aches today because of the way I fell.

We have about 24 inches here in NH. H is away and S3 and I are trying to figure out our plan of attack. My 5-lb dog doesn’t even come a third of the way up the wall of snow at every door. Taking him out first thing this morning was fun!

DH is now out plowing. He will be the third in our street to venture out. He will probably have to do our neighbor’s house too since he is away. Their teenage son is going to attempt the whole driveway so we’ll see if he needs rescuing. Our other neighbor just finished his driveway. Took ‘m 2 hrs. But I think he went at the wrong time when the snow was blowing and still coming down. The DP (dear pup) just went after 19 hours of holdin’ it. He was still hesitant to go out and sniffed at the snow for a while until we enticed him to go out. That adorable wuss.

@martharap, hope your sister will hang in there. Does she at least have a gas stove? She can try to keep warm with a hot water bottle or hot drink. So tough if you can’t even leave the house if you don’t have electricity.

I’m not completely certain how much snow we got at my house but an official total from a local airport about 3 miles from here is 36 inches.

I still can’t get over the big doc shoveling his own. Out there with the kids and wife today. And he’s managed a complete & precise result, as if plowed.

Sprains are a pain. I had an ankle injury last month from tennis (wore running shoes). There are some people on the diet/exercise thread that run on snow and ice so I might give it a try. We’re only talking a mile. I’ve never run in temperatures these cold before.

Do your storm doors have sliders or removable panels? May you could move enough snow out of the way through a window opening so that you could open the door or even climb out through an opening.

Went out to shovel/snowblow and not too long after a plow came to plow out our neighbor (who used to be our plow guy but doesn’t anymore). DH managed to convince him to plow us also - best $ ever spent! Still had to shovel and blow the part the plow couldn’t reach and get the huge amount off the Jeep in the driveway. But that was MUCH better than trying to do the whole driveway! Puppy was very happy to have the room to run around. He’s still wondering how to get to his woods but seems to be managing. So the driveway is clear, the car is cleared and moved and the sun is coming out!
