Big Snowstorm Headed for Northeast

Wishing safe travels to everyone who needs to be on the road tomorrow.

This is the type of thread that makes me smile at some of the responses to the “Where would be your ideal place to spend January and February?” discussion. ;)

Zoosermom, yes, thanks. She has many friends in NYC should she get stuck there.

thumper - As long as you have an alternative in Baltimore, it wouldn’t hurt to keep your current flight. Hartford isn’t supposed to get the worst of the wind and snow until later in the day, but you never know what the airlines will decide to do. You just wouldn’t want to get stuck having to stay at BWI to ride out the delays.

S1, who lives in Boston and loves blizzards, must be really excited. For 4 years as an undergrad in Philadelphia, he only experienced one big snowstorm. During his 4 years in Boston, there haven’t been many big storms either or he was away when they happened. He doesn’t have to worry about transportation until Sun when he’s supposed to fly to California.

Tried to tell DS in Boston to stock up on the necessities: food, batteries, water. He’s been there seven years and thinks he has seen it all. Just laughs at me. I don’t think he has seen a storm like this (CA boy). Having grown up in the area, I would be planning to get food and books! Would cancel any and all travel plans. DH and I drove to our honeymoon in a blizzard many moons ago. Not an experience I would ever want to repeat. (The blizzard not the honeymonon!)

Hahahahaha!

There is always a possibility that the Governor can close the roads to allow the plows to get through and prevent cars being stranded on the highways. I wouldn’t count on being able to drive. Hope everyone stays safe. ML, have a wonderful cruise. Sue, thanks for posting the website for hourly snowfall totals! We are in Florida now, but will have my son pick up my mom and her aide and bring them to our house, it has a generator. She looses power frequently. DH is on the phone with his mom to arrange for her to get to our home, aunt is safe in a rehab facility. Looks like our “senior camp” is open again for business. Gave a grocery list to son, told him to fill up the gas cans for the generator and fill the car with gas. MIL and mom will bring what is in their refrigerators. Have to call DH’s cousin to remind him to check on his mother, (he got a generator after hurricane Sandy and she is now his responsibility). She lives near my mom and also looses power frequently and is in a flood zone. She and my aunt have been evacuated by boat 2x when they refused to come to my house. Tired of standing in knee high water while the fire dept. dragged them out of their houses. We now just pick them up and get them out with much kicking and yelling. OK, checklist done, I think I will head to the beach.

2 feet of snow is manageable and temperatures will be above freezing next week. There is some snow predicted for next Thursday but I don’t think that New England will have many problems recovering if this thing is limited to two feet. Two years ago, we had about three feet in two weeks and that was a much bigger problem because temperatures were too cold to get a lot of melting.

Son can work from home tomorrow so I’m picking him up tonight. I hope that the grocery stores aren’t cleaned out this evening.

Oooh, I’m so jealous. I just sit here at home looking at live webcams of my favorite beaches this time of year. If you don’t mind, which beach in Florida?

St. Pete Beach. It is a beautiful beach, wide, white sand, very quiet with sand dunes near our area. The Gulf water temp. is only 67 degrees, far to cold for me, but it will warm up in the next few weeks.

Thumper,
Here is a slide show from a Boston TV station with hour by hour accumulation for most of the Northeast.

[Blizzard forecast: Hour-by-hour snowfall forecast | WCVB Home - Weather](Hour-by-hour blizzard snowfall predictor)

You may have to get to slide 55 or so to get your information

ECmotherx2 --

I’m familiar with St. Pete Beach. Very nice area. My favorite beaches are in the Sarasota area. Hope to eventually spend our winters in Florida and perhaps buy a property there. The water may be chilly, but the air temperature is currently 74 so who can complain.

According to the slide show of snow accumulation, here is the breakdown for the Worcester area on Friday night:

10 pm - 8.9"
11 pm - 12.8"
12 am - 15.8"
1:30 am - 18.8"

That’s an incredible amount of snow in a relatively short period of time. That’s almost 3 inches per hour for an accumulation of 10 inches in 3-1/2 hours.

Worcester does seem to be getting hit pretty hard.

BTW, this thing doesn’t look as bad as I thought for the evening commute in the Boston - 495 belt.

www1.whdh.com

Once it starts it will come down at 3 to 4 inches every hour.
No one wants to get stuck in that…

Just watched the Weather Channel. The storm is now officially “Winter Storm Nemo.” They are telling people in the Boston area that this blizzard is going to be intense. They’ve given it a storm-con index of 10/10. Basically, they’re saying you should hunker down Friday through Saturday morning. Don’t try to go anywhere. With the chance of 50 mph wind gusts, anyone who lives in an area prone to power outages should prepare for the worst. Then you have to deal with snow drifts.

This reminds me of the time I was trying to get to work (1980’s time frame) in Boston heading east on the Mass Pike in a winter storm. I knew it was time to turn around and go home when I saw a police car heading west on the east bound highway. !!! Times like these it’s a good idea to hunker down and plan for no travel.

Oh yeah this reminds me of the time (lolling) we were driving north for a romantic weekend getaway in a snowstorm. I was driving; DH was qvetching about how slow I was going and pointed out the guy passing me. Of course five minutes later we saw that guy in a the ditch off the road.

This reminds me of the time I was entering onto the main roadway with a light dusting of snow newly fallen and as I turned into the yield lane the car did a graceful twirl and stopped facing 180 degrees backward.

Or the time we were driving north on black ice and the car skated down the hill and landed two inches from the barn door next to the other car that had hit the barn door.

Experienced driving in New England? Oy. Stay home or go early if you can. Dumbo, any chance you can join your dau in NYC?

They are saying that weather conditions will not start to improve until Saturday afternoon. They are also warning that weather conditions will deteriorate quickly on Friday. Light snow around noon in Boston could be blizzard conditions later on in the afternoon.

Let the closings begin! School is cancelled in Boston for tomorrow and I expect our town to announce before the end of the day. We are smack in the middle of the 18" area. I will admit I still love a snow day.

The mayor has declared a snow emergency in Boston starting at noon Friday. Schools are cancelled.
