Big Snowstorm Headed for Northeast

They downgraded our predictions from 6-12" to 2-7" in just a few hours. I love meteorologists :)

North of Portland, the prediction is for light snow showers to start around 6 am. Snow showers continue until 3 pm, when “snow” begins. I wonder if our school districts will close! I don’t envy the people who have to make the decisions.

Yeah, it’s a hard call. We could end up with light, fluffy flurries until 7PM or get hit with blizzard conditions just at the time schools would normally let out. My guess is that most Greater Boston schools will be conservative and cancel. No superintendent wants to be responsible for a busload of elementary school kids stuck on a bus in a storm for 36 hours.

It looks like we’ll have about three inches on the ground early tomorrow afternoon. My plan is to come to work early in the morning and go home when it starts to look like there’s an inch or two on the cars.

Yup - Boston and Fall River schools are closed already. Hoping DD’s get’s closed tonight also so there’s no need for that 5 am wakeup robo call saying it’s closed. Since she goes to a catholic school in one of those diocese’s maybe they’ll follow along?

But I’ve got a car full of gas, food and dog food for the puppy and will bring some more wood into the garage in a bit to feed the wood stove. If we’re home tomorrow we’ll enjoy and do some baking!

That map is interesting. I just looked at it again after seeing it last night. Last night Providence was in the 30+ inch category and now it looks like it’s moved those amount north to Boston. We look like we could be anywhere from 22 to 30 inches! That’s about 10 inches more than last night! Think I may need even more wood!

Wow! We’re having a harsh Texas winter (high of 72 degrees today), but we’ll be jealous of you when it’s 102 this summer ;-).

Seriously, good luck y’all. Be careful!!!

We live right in the middle of the blizzard area. We are 15 miles north of Boston. We’re supposed to get 1 to 2 feet of snow. Some isolated sections could get 30 inches. The superintendent said today that he has no plans to cancel school tomorrow!

Peter Pan Buslines has now cancelled all service from NYC north starting Friday, until further notice.

[Cancellations|Peter Pan](http://peterpanbus.com/Travel%20Advisories/2013-cancellations/?_osource=SocialFlowTwt_CTBrand)

If you check the weather wisdom blog, you see the models are pushing north and that is moving the big dump of snow north of Boston. Which is great for me. Remember, the big snowfall comes when the storm circulates back from the northeast. As it moves further up - and this was originally going to be totally off shore - the circulation back moves toward NH and ME. Means more snow in ski country.

We’re only going to have a few inches of snow during Friday school time, maybe not that. Canceling is chicken.

romanigypsyeeyes- They’ve downgraded us because the first part is going to be freezing rain/sleet/ice. So we’ll get a layer of ice under the few inches of snow. I’m more fearful of driving on ice than I am driving on snow. Snow covered ice though…not fun.

Many school systems around Boston have already canceled school for tomorrow.

Yay. Good snowshoe weather!

Just got an emergency alert on my cell phone - it was making a noise I’ve never heard before!

Our town’s schools have been cancelled although it’s not yet on the news stations lists of cancelled schools. DD’14’s best friend’s mom is on school committee so they knew by facebook posting before it hit anywhere officially! I’ve told DD I’m not sending her to her out of town school tomorrow. Apparently there’s a state of emergency in the city her school is in so I’m assuming it will be cancelled. She’s going in for an accepted students night tonight and expects to hear tonight from the school

^me too. It’s the first Emergency Alert I’ve received on my cell phone.

Since when did they start naming winter storms? Nemo – geez.

Just keep snowing, just keep snowing…

I have a flight scheduled to arrive in boston at 7:00 p.m. on Sat. What do you all think? Will it be cancelled? I can’t believe this . . . wow.

The storm if I read the forecasts is supposed to have blown through by Saturday morning, but the problem is, if Boston gets hit by 2 or more feet of snow, the airport may be shut down. Even if they have the airport up and running, it is likely you will face massive delays, air travel is going to be affected by this all over the country I suspect.

So far it doesn’t look bad in my neck of the woods (north central NJ, about 40 miles west of NYC), they are saying the heavy snow will hit Friday night, and we will have about 6" or so…so not too bad. I have 1/2 chord of wood ready, so we should be okay:).

We just got the robo call from my DD’s school. Cancelled.

musicprnt: given that, for the most part, the area you describe usually stays “all snow”, I imagine that 6" number will be on the low end of the totals…I would be thrilled if that were the case, but I doubt it…
