Biggest tear-jerker movies-- hand me a kleenex

I agree with ChoatieMom: Life is Beautiful

I remember sobbing during The King and I.

My sister just went to pieces during The Fox and The Hound when the lady has to dump the fox in the forest and he can’t understand why she is leaving.

When I was very little, we had a vinyl recording of someone reading the Bambi story. Every single time I heard the gun shot, I bawled my eyes out. I have very vivid memories of sitting next to the record player and listening to the story.

I just Googled about it and found someone trying to sell the record on Ebay for $200!

When I was little my mom had to take me out of the theater in the middle of Bambi. I never watched it again after that.

Madame X
(Not well known.)

For the Les Mis fans. Key and Peele present a different take:

I tease my husband about crying over Spielberg movies. He doesn’t cry easily but I did see his tears while watching ET, Schindler’s List, and The Color Purple.

No one cries at Casablanca?

And agree totally about Brokeback Mountain, most heartbreaking movie ever. When Ennis (Heath Ledger) just holds Jack’s shirt, I bawled.

The boy in the stripped pajamas

Dadx, I totally know Madame X! It often was a double feature with Imitation of Life. I bet if I saw it now as a mother I would bawl my eyes out.

Oh, Grave of the Fireflies is unbearable.
Which reminds me of another sad Japanese movie-- about a schoolteacher and her students before/during/after WWII: Twenty-four Eyes.
Touching Chinese movie about a young substitute teacher in rural China: Not One Less.

So many sad movies are for kids!
Reminds me of all those emotionally raw( manipulative?) books aimed at middle schoolers.
I’ll add a few more.
My Girl
My Dog Skip.
Iron Giant.
Also older films, Sophie’s Choice, Philadelphia, Hotel Rwanda; and even older, Imitation of Life.

^^^OMG yes, Sophie’s Choice.

Colorado_mom, don’t even get me started on TV! Last weekend I saw (for at least the fourth time) the episode “The Inner Light” from Star Trek TNG. Gets me every time.

I rarely used to cry during movies, at least as an adult, though a few have done it. Ever since I’ve been going through menopause, it takes very little. I cried at that Folger’s commercial where the sister is waiting anxiously for her brother to get home for Christmas. I think DH thought I was losing my grip.

@youdon’tsay, I have seen The Notebook, but only once and I don’t remember crying. It was after it had been out for a while and everyone told me I would cry, so maybe I had to be the rebel? I vaguely recall feeling manipulated a bit by the movie… I am not really a Sparks fan; it seems all of his books and movies are set up for the specific purpose of trying to make people cry!

I will second a few more things mentioned:

Toy Story 3, Madame X, Dumbo, and I recently watched Grave of the Fireflies on Netflix with my 14yo son—we were both using up the tissues with that one. Titanic—but only the scenes mentioned above with the old couple and the mother telling a bedtime story. I still think they could have gotten Jack on that door if they really wanted to.

One movie I haven’t seen all of (in fact, only the last few minutes) is The Champ with Jon Voight and Ricky Schroeder. I don’t know what they did to that child to make him cry like that, but it is hard to watch that scene and not tear up yourself. In fact, in a study done 16 years ago at Berkeley, this scene has been rated the saddest movie scene of all time:

<a href=“The Champ Death - YouTube”>The Champ Death - YouTube;

@Piggle: Yes, yes, yes to The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (but you can see the ending coming a mile away).

I’m also a sucker for the Gene Tierney/Rex Harrison version of the “The Ghost and Mrs. Muir.”

Hands down for me…The Notebook.

Oh yes, Sophie’s Choice. I sobbed out loud in the theater and that was before we even had children, I think.

Edward Scissorhands

Mr. Holland’s Opus

<<<
Sophie’s Choice

Oh my, just thinking about that movie makes me cry.
