Bike Lock - Not Kryptonite?

Hey everyone, I know that the Kryptonite is the most trusted brand in bike locks. But, while I was doing my research on locks, I came across Onguard Bulldog locks. Can anyone give me their opinions and advice about this brand? They’re relatively cheaper and, from what I’ve read, touts supposedly excellent locks. Can anyone help? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks a lot!

Honestly, you’re asking the question at the wrong place pal…

But luckily I’m here to the rescue a fellow cyclist. My father’s cyclery also happens to be a authorized seller of Onguard Bulldog Locks. I also happen to have one myself too (hey what’s better then using one’s own son as a guinea pig? But hey its to spread awareness and info)

Yes they are cheaper and the corresponding build quality is appearant from the those of kryptonite. These locks in my opinion could* keep your bike safe as a kryptonite… BUT the only problem is thieves know this but their mentality assume that it’s a kryptonite (kryptonite were the first to invent the U lock and the super heavy/ protection chain locks) knock off, therefore inferior and would be more likely to attempt to steal a bike with a Onguard lock than a kryptonite protected lock. BUT from my personal experience, since I hang out/ apprentice at my dad’s shop, there are always people coming in and out; one day a customer came to post a stolen sign on our bulletin board, his son’s bike, he also brought in his son’s former Onguard u lock (we sold it to him ^.^); it had been defeated with a car jack and presented to us in its deformed former glory… we never had that happen with a kryptonite lock…

I would also like to mention the parent company of Kryptonite Locks is a older and popular company, Ingersoll Rand, who specialize in industrial and commercial machinery. Onguard on the other hand is an pretty new company… compared to kryptonite’s 40+ years of experience in bike protection.

~ALSO BEWARE; WALMART ALSO STOCKS CHEAPER THEREFORE LOWER END/ LESS SAFE ONGUARD PRODUCTS!!!

wheres a good place to buy bike locks online?

@ xxmsp91

Amazon.

Thanks a lot leukybear! Its just my dad doesnt want to spend too much on a lock since mine isnt expensive… so i wanted a cheap but reliable u-lock he’d invest in. Thanks again!

Well you can always tell him would he like to invest in a cheap lock(s) and ~multiple bikes~?

Think of it as a form of insurance. ;)

I’m pretty sure a $40 lock is better than replacing say a $80 walmart bike (aka the lowest of the low)… and then the inconvenience of having to walk back and then buying another one later…

do we really need a heavy duty lock? hows the theft scene in ucsd?

Bike theft is common at all college campuses…

“Hey what beats a better target than forgetful college kids who care more about their education then their belongings?”

^What a lie! Bike locks are a total scam! Seriously guys, don’t waste your money on a bike lock. Your bike will be fine.

^Na, I’m kidding! I’m kidding! Ha ha. Sorry, I had to do it. Seriously though, don’t be stupid. Invest in a good bike lock so you don’t lose your bike.

@$KingsElite$

Darn it, I just threw all of mine in the bin… *rolleyes…

^Ha ha. I just wanted your brain to momentarily explode. :slight_smile: I plan on getting a Kyroponite lock now though. I just used a cheap one from Target last year but I plan on not losing my bike so I’ll take your recommendation.

darn it. but they’re just sooo expensive, and i like my wallet just nice and fat like. lol. i guess ill get that new york mini kryptonite thing ._.

what are some other good alternatives?

@xxmsp91

I wouldn’t get the new york mini… that’s just plain overkill… unless you have like a very expensive bike or you live in NY…

Save yourself the money and get a kryptonite evolution lock…

And if you like your wallet fat, just break your big bills into $1; you’ll be ballin’ yo!

What if I got a cheapo ulock, spraypainted it silver with some bs logo that said titanium, then got carbon fiber threads and weaved them together to make a half inch thick cable, and then made an alarm system that would be tripped if someone tried to push the ulock open with a carjack or something?

@kewlosaurusrex

Nope its not going to work as you’re going to lazy out after silver spraypainting it…

Is it a good idea to wrap the wire around the seat too everytime so the seat doesnt get stolen?

I’m planning to buy a kryptonite too, found one for 40 bucks on amazon.

If you have a really nice bike, lock it inside over night lol. A nice road bike, especially a fixed gear one are large targets for thieves.

Great advice up there, just right above this post^^^

But I have to add, having experience/ street smart in the SF area, always keep your bike being locked up outside/ in the wild to a minimum, as chances of it being spotted and stolen exponentially rise with time.

Also do not always lock up in the same spot, thieves will notice and stake your bike out.

oh so thieves just aim for the nice ones?

I’m thinking of bringing my ghetto one from the 90’s with the pedal gears horribly adjusted. Hopefully it won’t get stolen because of appearance.

Btw, this may be the wrong place to ask, but if my front tire seems like it releases some air after going 5 miles, is it flat? I pump it like every day so it will be inflated, then after a short cycle the air seems to be back to normal, not super flat or anything, just squishy. Just wondering if it’s worth buying a new wheel or I should keep pumpin it every day.
