Binge watched tv shows (Part 1)

I just saw that there will be a Season 4, with a time jump of 6 years. I’m glad to revisit with them but I thought Season 3 ended with what could have been the series ending, so I hope they can continue the quality.

Six year time jump! Huh. Not sure what to think about that. But will look forward to.

This was mentioned on the movie thread but it’s really a mini series so I wanted to endorse it here Alexander: The Making of a God on Netflix. I’m enjoying the docu-drama part of it - I like ancient archaeology and history so it’s fun seeing it come to life. And the narrators are very enthusiastic. I also appreciate Alex’s beautiful blue eyes.

Oh - just checked and apparently he had one blue and one brown eye!

I think that is for us TV viewers! Same thing happens on Law & Order and similar shows. Maybe they should say “let me know what the CC tv show as soon as you can” or something like that.

Profiler shows - “he’s escalating”. Yeah, you are all profiles, psychologists, etc and know that!
But maybe we viewers need a primer.

Actually, every time she says that, I think, “Kenny, check out retirement; you’re 70 years old.”

I have watched more British detective/crime shows than I can count. No other lead detectives gave such mundane order to their staff everytime like Vera did.

And if that was done for the viewers, the script writer was insulting us.

If you have a chance, please check out another British police show called No Offence. Every member of that police team knew what to do, did it and reported it back to the boss. With their reports, viewers know what had been done and why.

I was quite miffed that Season 4 of No Offence was cancelled. Maybe, the decision maker was the same person who cancelled Foyle’s War!! (an excellent show and I was glad it was later revived).

I really liked No Offense.

Do you know Silent Witness? Gruesome, sciency CSI :sunglasses: fewer gadgets more open corpses and organ examination. Perfect if you have a would-be premed at home (though it’d be more Biological Anthropology - heard about forensic botany in a recent episode). Run off the mill mysteries but you get to visit places around London and the Thames.

And if you want “police show as pretext to understand a small town”, ala Mare of Eastown, I can’t recommend Happy Valley enough.

I’m really loving this season of Silent Witness, although I do find myself saying, “Jack, you’re a forensic scientist; why are you running after suspects?”

And the absurdity that everyone in the lab knows BSL.

The episode at Royal Holloway was off though, something was wrong with some of the dialogue or characters - though I really liked seeing the drone shots of historical buildings. The mystery/science was good.
The mummy episode had me really worried for the 4 ALevels boy :joy:
Jack trying to be an action hero is hilarious.

I suppose they make a nice point wrt BSL, as absurd as it is.

No Offence spelled the British way

I watched Silent Witness up to Series 10. Will need to pick it up again.

I love Happy Valley and Sarah Lancashire.

If you want to venture out, try Harrow, an Australian’s crime show featuring a pathologist was a lead character. Whodunnit with a surprise.

And a light-hearted detective show from New Zealand, Brokenwood Mysteries. I think it is better than Midsomer Murders.

Silent Witness is up to Season 27! We started it during Covid (before it had quite this many seasons) knowing it would give us a ton of episodes. We’ve liked it, though you do have to suspend your disbelief of so many coincidences and pathologist connections to the story.

Agree. Many times I was amazed that these pathologists acted like they were detectives and stupidly risked their lives to pursue the bad guys instead of leaving the matters to police.

I know there are many more series of this show. I have to take a break and watch something else once in a while.

If you have not tried these, I recommend the Unforgotten and CB Strike. Two different shows but both are very good.

Yea, we never actually binge watch any of these shows. We mix and match over time.

We also thought Unforgotten was excellent. And DCI Banks (recommended here). For a more light hearted UK detective show we enjoy an occasional episode of Cheap Tricks…. has a bit of a Grumpy Old men vibe.

SILENT WITNESS tip - In many of the seasons, each “story” covers 2 episodes. We watch back-to-back, to remember all the details and have a movie-length viewing.

H and I started The Night Manager this week. So far we really like it.

We liked it too.

I’m in the second season of 6 ft under and it really is getting dark. Anyone else feel that? I know the show ending is great but that is a long way off.

Just binged season 3, not much sunshine heading your way.

Yay! And I like this news: Landgraf did, however, speak on release strategy for the show, saying he had “no doubt” that Hulu will continue to release all episodes on one day rather than week-to-week.

Really enjoying No Offence. We’re on season 2.

We tried to watch Expats mentioned upthread. I thought we’d at least enjoy the Hong Kong locations (we did), but it was so dreary. I realize that’s part of the point, but we aren’t in the mood to be depressed. I’ve never liked her acting (except as a baddie in The Golden Compass) she always seems so stiff and expressionless. We turned it off half way through the second episode shortly after she leaves her small child outside in the hall alone. Yes, your kid is a handful, but this is not a solution!
