We just watched the first episode of “Sugar” with Colin Farrell. Very atmospheric and noir-y but contemporary. I like it.
Just finished Ripley (Andrew Scott) on Netflix (commercial free). Wow really different and dark. I’m sure I missed a lot of symbolism in it. We really liked it. Excellent actor.
On a different note I tried to rewatch Andrew Scott in the second season of Fleabag on Amazon Prime. I did not want to pay extra for no commercials and this is the first time I saw a show with them. Way too many commercials. Are they trying to get me to pay extra? It just made me not want to watch it at all.
I missed S2 so will look for it! Thanks
In some ways ways, it reminds me of the recent Perry Mason - dark but not hopeless, meticulously recreated era for a historical but not nostalgic atmosphere.
Season 2 is better than Season 1, IMHO. The show started a little slow but it gets better and better. I really like the last episode of Season 2.
Dalgleich character reminds me of the lead character in Foyle’s War, calmly understated but very effective.
We liked Ripley. Yes, very dark. Only a few scenes are ugly/violent, but the evil undertone is throughout. We enjoyed the Italian scenery, and the black/white photography is well done - reminded us of Hitchcock movies.
I just binged So Help Me Todd season 1 and loved it. Funny and character driven. Very clever with screwball comedy back and forth dialog. At the same the back stories of the characters are compelling. I just heard that it’s been cancelled after two seasons! I’m so disappointed.
BTW anybody know where/how I can watch either or both The Repair Shop season 6 and beyond or Grand Designs other than youtube? I wouldn’t object to paying to watch.
Season 3 of Sister Boniface Mysteries starts today on Britbox. The first episode is the Christmas 2023 episode for anyone who already watched. Then 2 new episodes, and I’m assuming the balance will release weekly.
I just finished Baby Reindeer on Netflix. VERY strange, mainly because it’s a true story. It’s a psychological drama about a guy and his obsessive stalker. The acting is wonderful, especially Jessica Gunning, who plays the stalker. It’s powerful drama but not for everyone.
Loved it. Dark but raw and I agree she was amazing.
H and I just started watching “Elsbeth”. It’s a crime show but funny, too and light.
Started on Tubi- Big Mood with Nicola Coughlan and Lydia West. It really show Nicola’s acting range well and I really enjoyed it so far. But, the commercials are so distracting I have to remind myself where it left off in the story.
We went back to “New Tricks” last night. Also crime show that is funny and light… such good cast chemistry. Sometimes that’s exactly the kind of thing we want at the end of our evening.
Old show…but we started watching Killing Eve on Netflix and are enjoying it thus far.
Just finished Big Mood on Tubi. Nicola Coughlan did a great job with range of emotions. I would say extremely accurate except for the visual hallucinations- should have been auditory hallucinations for manic psychosis. A little too dark for me. I did need subtitles for the British accents.
Australian show “Fisk”. Good one. And we are going to try “Slow Horses” again as I hear so often how good it is.
I loved both - Fisk really grew on me.
Watching The Way Home. It’s Hallmark Channel. But with a time travel element. Apparently it’s a HUGE hit for Hallmark. But I’d never heard of it. A friend recommended. I’m really enjoying it.
On the do not recommend list, I loathed Alice and Jack. The female character was so annoying I wanted to throw something at her. And yell at the male lead in this romance story: “ Dude, what are you doing?Run! Run far way!” Did not go past the first episode. Yuck!
I binged it, I was surprised at how much I liked it, in a virgin river kind of way.
We’re a bit behind, but watched first episode last night of the 4-parter Mr. Bates vs The Post Office. As we watched, I got more and more angry at the British government----these were un-wealthy, hard working regular Joes who got their lives totally upended and screwed over by the Postal Service!! Cannot wait to see how it comes about that they are all exonerated.
Have already set the DVR to record a look at the real life people affected by this scandal.
I have already finished Mr. Bates via my PBS Passport access and I felt the same way, @MADad. Be ready to hold on to your anger throughout. Although some justice prevails, it isn’t enough, IMO.
