Binge watched tv shows (Part 2)

I went to cancel AppleTV and they offered me half rate for four (six?) months.

Darn. I cancel and I got no offer

Netflix drops House of Guinness today. From the sound of it, think Succession in 1800s Ireland. Battles between the 4 adult children of Benjamin Guinness after his death.

I finished watching The Last Socialist Artefact, a Croatian series (6 episodes on MHZ) set in the 1990s (after Yugoslavia came apart). Two men (cousins) from the big city (Zagreb) arrive in a small, dying rust belt town and attempt to revive an abandoned turbine factory, funded by a mystery investor. Each episode focuses on a different main character and how he/she views events. It was a clever way to move the story forward. Apparently, the series is based on a novel (No-Signal Area by Robert Perisic). One theme throughout the series is the lack of decent cell phone service, which creates a host of miscommunications.

I got an email from Spectrum and actually read it, thank goodness. It turns out my plan includes Hulu, Disney+, HBO Max, ESPN Unlimited, Paramount, Peacock, and AMC+. Why have I been paying for some of these?? I canceled my subscriptions and then re-activated them through Spectrum.

Yes! So good. Even though I’m not usually a fan of shows with violence. I laughed at what seemed like a Ted Lasso crossover with one of the mayoral candidates.

Nobody Wants This Season 2 is coming on October 23, A Man on the Inside Season 2 is coming on November 20 and there will be a second season of The Four Seasons. All on Netflix.

Woo hoo!

I like both Nobody Wants this and A man on the Inside. That’s good news.

Last night I finished streaming Bon Appetit, Your Majesty on Netflix, an admittedly odd name for a Korean time traveling rom com. That’s a lot to pack into one show, especially when you add dynastic conflict and treason and fighting and cooking - lots of cooking - tons of cooking - including cooking competitions. The female protagonist is an award winning chef who gets sent back in time to medieval Korea to, well, you have to see it. A lot of fun with stunning costumes and sets and omg the food porn! My only problem is that although it was dubbed, there were a lot of closed captions in both Korean and English that sped by so I’m sure I missed a lot there.

I think the Chicago shows new seasons drop (edited to correct) Wednesday.

I watched it in Korean with subtitles because I noticed the English-dubbed version didn’t include as much information. It also helped after I read little bits about that time period - it takes place in 1504-05, the Renaissance in Europe, which obviously isn’t a marker in Korean history so nothing was recognizable to me – I’d been recommended this show because there’s some time travel and have never seen a Korean historical drama nor do I know anything about Korean history. So I learned about the period, the tyrant vs. wise king political ideals, deciphering the hats and clothes patches… Lots of wonderful costumes.
The little time travel clashes were interesting.
I loved the cooking competitions. I looked up some of the traditional dishes that were part of the fusion style cooking - pajeon looks the easiest and the black chicken is now very rare.
The acting style was also disconcerting in a good way - as are the court music and dances.
Lots of choreographed fights&battles but not graphic, they ā€œsymbolizeā€ violence (violent death = person vomits black paint - you don’t actually see wounds.)
Still while the female main character was granted exceptional professional ability, she was reduced to a child by the plot at various points. And I hate the romance trope of ā€œlove will change the worst b..ā€ because it’s so dangerous in real life.
In the end I recommend it for the experience.

I’m watching ā€œDocā€ on Netflix and enjoying it. It’s about a very talented doctor who gets in a bad car accident and has a brain injury that causes her to forget the last 8 years of her life. Of course, a lot of stuff happened during that time, and she struggles to get her footing again. It’s actually based on the story of a Spanish doctor - he lost 12 years of his life.

Molly Parker, a Canadian actress, plays the doctor. I knew she looked familiar - she was in ā€œHouse of Cards.ā€ I like her.

I binged the first season over the summer and really enjoyed it. Not as good as The Pitt, but still good for a network show.

Season 2 starts this week

The reason why Thd Pitt is my favorite medical drama is because it focuses on the medical stuff, and not side romances and drama (I do t think I can go back to Grey’s now after all of these seasons). Doc (based on trailers) seems to have more of a soap opera focus.

Just finished Happy Valley on Prime (maybe Brit Box) and really enjoy it!

Since it first aired in 2014 and finished in 2023, I thought we were going to keep busy for while - but it is only 3 seasons! There is a 6-year gap between seasons 2 and 3. The creator specifically wanted time for a character to grow older and apparently was kept busy with other projects. Amazingly, she was able to get all the actors back!

Oh, for sure. But the acting is decent and I like the story line. The new season must be why the first season showed up as a suggestion on Netflix.
