Binge watched tv shows (Part 2)

Yeah, I don’t think I will watch more shows of this type. I find myself depressed!

Honestly, that’s why I like Ghosts (CBS). It’s not saccharine (I don’t think so at least) but it’s sweet and funny. It doesn’t hesitate poking fun (like the way they BOTH took Sassapis’ understanding of Thanksgiving seriously AND made fun of some ways of grandstanding about it) but it’s never depressing.
Elsbeth is a bit too whimsical/cutesy for my taste. Murderbot was also the right kind of serious and light for me.
I want to try the last Western show with Gillian Anderson but I worry it’ll be too violent and dark. (I can do gritty/dark, cf. RiotWomen, but there needs to be a point and some balance.)
Netflix has 2 shows that seem promising: Forever and One Day (<- I know the ending so I can prepare. )

I am, shall we say, aware of the territory. I found the Sopranos to be really interesting all by itself, notwithstanding the business Tony et al were involved with. Just mho of course.

I liked MadMen a lot and didn’t find all the characters unlikeable. They made some bad choices, though. I would watch that again if there wasn’t so much other good TV out there.

I’m watching Taskmaster. It’s laugh out loud funny and very clever. 5 comedians are set various tasks like making a block of ice disappear and the fun is how each of them goes about it. It’s all on youtube so free to watch.

We watched the British Taskmaster from Season 1 to about Season 10 and somehow, our interest has gone somewhere else. When we watched them, it was a lot of fun. Greg did a great j9b as a taskmaster.

If you want, try Taskmaster New Zealand. It is as fun in a quirky way.

Just finished the Diddy docuseries on Netflix. Surprised the freak-off trial played such a small part. Man, does he seem to touch a bunch of shady things.

For the Mad Men lovers - or perhaps for anyone thinking about watching. No real spoilers (that I noted but I have watched and might not pick up on some subtleties, but some language used to describe the characters and how the show progressed. A good history on how it earned its rank of a top forever show.

watched, and really liked Unforgotten, and am now in the second season of Slow Horses. Nicola Walker and Gary Oldman are both terrific in anchoring their respective shows.

I think I am not allowed to tell you more about Unforgotten. All I can say is that every season has been very good.

l love Slow Horses (both book series and the show). I love all the slow horses and Jackson Lamb. Glad that Gary is nominated Best Actor for Drama by Golden Globe again. I hope he wins.

As much as I enjoy both Slow Horses and Gary Oldman, the Golden Globe is Noah Wyle’s to lose.

I am aware. I still hold on to a slim hope for Jackson Lamb.

At the same time, I have been baffled by several nominations White Lotus got at the Emmy and now the Golden Globe. This 3rd season is so boring. I could not last beyond the first episode (and I really enjoyed season 1).

I told my daughter I was watching Heated Rivalry when I first posted and she was like why would you watch such a thing…sounds terrible . Last night she called me to say the show has “taken over social media” and expressed shock that I was aware of the show before her and before it made such a splash! She wasn’t aware I read a lot of romance and that “gay hockey smut” was a sub genre. Though HR is the only one I’ve read and only because it has such wild devotion from other readers. I did love it but I honestly couldn’t believe they made it into a tv show.

I believe that in order to keep things more interesting and more fair, someone or a show that won the previous year should not be able to enter the list of nominees the following year. If they’re still good in Y+2 of course they could be nominated again. But it’d allow for less of that “rote nomination”, where the nominating people/bodies just go the easy way and don’t seem to have watched all the shows on offer, simply picking whatever’s won before.

Not applicable to the actors nominated for White Lotus. But none will win anyway, since there are 5 actors nominated in 2 categories which will likely cancel each other out.

And based on your criteria, Gary Oldman couldn’t be nominated since this is his 3rd consecutive nomination.

Nor would it cover streaming series that have more than a year between seasons. This is Jean Smart’s 4th nom in 5 years, and only not nominated in 2023 because of the time between seasons.

Did Gary Oldman or Jean Smart win last year?
(The “no repeat” rule would only be for winning, being nominated many times is fair game).

Jean Smart did

Ah, OK

I don’t mind actors/actresses who won repeatedly as long as their acting continues to be outstanding. The same go with the shows.

What I mind is when actors or actresses won because of their reputation or financial backing. I also don’t like it when some shows have gotten many nominations by living off their previous reputation. White Lotus comes to mind.

TV shows like Happy Valley, Slow Horses, Unforgotten, etc., have maintained high quality production and acting series after series. Those shows should be recognized.

What I mind is those that get nominated and win based on PR, including the numerous “For Your Consideration” ads

That’s in part what my idea addresses though
Juries couldn’t get too lazy.
If you like a show it’s cool to see it win year after year after year but it means other shows aren’t recognized and it’s not even clear the lesser known shows were even seriously considered because there was that low fruit hanging requiring no long hours of actually watching and paying attention to other shows. :face_with_tongue:
