I finished season 3 over the weekend and am starting on season 4. All I can say is at least Reacher knows how to order a cheesesteak. ![]()
Recently binged Ride or Die, followed by Furious, halfway through season one of Your Friends and Neighbors. Like to throw in Ted Lasso episodes for a break.
I’ve been watching season 1 of Mobland. Kinda-sorta Soprano-like although very different in England. Enjoying Joanne Froggatt (Anna Bates in Downton Abbey) in a very different role.
Just a quick note that many shows discussed here won Emmy’s last night (I didn’t watch). Jean Smart won best comedy actress for all five seasons of Hacks. Matthew Rhys won two lead actor, bringing his grand total to three. Maybe I should watch The Beast in Me although it’s not really my genre. The Pitt and Noah Wylie won again.

Husband asked if I had watched Widow’s Bay -, we don’t currently have Apple+.
I was not aware that Widow’s Bay is a comedy (comedy horror)!! Maybe, I should give it a try.
I made sure my Apple TV subscription is good. Slow Horses Season 6 starts tomorrow. Critics have given high praises of this season.
It seems as long as Noah Wylie is leading the Pitt, Gary Oldman won’t get an Emmy for his Jackson Lamb role in Slow Horses. I am still rooting for Sir Gary.
Jean Smart and Alison Janney (who also won last night for The Diplomat) are now tied with Julia Louis-Dreyfuss and Cloris Leachman for the most acting Emmys with 8
He’s the first person in history to win lead acting Emmys in all three major categories — drama (which he won in 2017 for The Americans), comedy, and limited series — and the first to win two lead awards in the same night. Although, I thought Widow’s Bay is as much a comedy as The Bear.
Part of the weekend’s Creative Arts broadcast, Rob Reiner broke the record for time between acting Emmys - 48 years, when he won Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for the Bear. His previous win was for All in the Family. The old record - 37 years - was held by his dad.
I said yes. Some of it twice!
THere’s a great clip of Gary Oldman complaining about long waits for new seasons, and his feeling that people can’t be expected to remember characters forever. I love Slow Horses. Smart and clever and unpredictable. DH and I are eating junk food tonight to celebrate the return of Jackson Lamb
My son told me he was enjoying Widow’s Bay a while back. We both like comedies but I don’t watch horror. Now that it’s won so many Emmy’s I may give it a try. I’m looking forward to the return of Slow Horses. I don’t like violence either but a great show can overcome that. I’m pretty good at telling when to look away.
My take on a couple of shows:
Widow’s Bay - it is a quirkly, genre-spanning show. While there are definitely spooky elements and a couple of scary shots, it’s much more about the place and the people. It is not a laugh-out-loud comedy like Hacks, but a clever dialogue amusing show.
Slow Horses - I don’t care for violence either, but there is not too much. Watch it for Gary Oldman’s character. I am still torn as to whether it is the acting or just the superb writing for his character.
While I love Noah Wylie on the Pitt, I think Mark Ruffalo was robbed for Task. What a great show. Now there is a show with a lot of violence, but it had such nuance and humanity at the same time.
We watched all of Slow Horses in the last month and really enjoyed it. Almost too violent at times but I could do it. However, I read some reviews which referenced some horrific deaths in the new season and I might have to skip it. Or have H watch first and monitor for me. He knows what I can and can’t deal with.
Widow’s Bay is one of those shows that has a lot going on in the background–the visual cues, the subtle dialogue you don’t first clue into. So it’s a great show from first watch but a second or third watch makes it even better.
I of course am over the moon for Rhea Seehorn winning Outstanding Lead Actress and Vince Gilligan finally breaking the curse (53 nominations no win, and for both it was definitely wrong at least a couple times).
Cute, non traditional post-Emmy interview involving Rhea Seehorn, her non-industry husband, and HS senior and college sophomore sons. Anyway, YAY Pluribus ![]()

Widow’s Bay is a comedy with jump scares… - from comedic secondary characters to subtle cues to farce to comedy situations.. but with dread woven in and jump scares+horrific moments, some of which clearly reference classics like Carrie or The Shining. Mathew Rhys’ performance elevates the show to its winning level but all actors are terrific, Patricia is a character you don’t even notice at first but by the end of Ep4, wow. It’s so original and unlike anything else. I do wish Hacks had won either for comedy or writing because that S5 was perfect. Two very different styles.
I love Slow Horses and can’t wait to watch the new season tomorrow. Well-written, terrific performances, and I do think people are tired of The Pitt’s main producer/main actor being a not-nice person IRL so Gary Oldman may well win next year. ![]()
The Pitt is a great ensemble show and I think their nominating everybody for supporting actress led to Allison Janey winning, her performance was good and she’s a great actor but S3 of the Diplomat just wasn’t at the same level as 1&2 so I don’t think she went into it as a favorite. I’m disappointed for Taylor Dearden or Sepideh Moafi. Next year?
Drama spread the awards, which I think is the way to go. Comedy didn’t, which is awesome for AppleTV (most Emmys by far) but perhaps not “fair”, in that several shows should always be recognized.
It’s strange how they split the ceremony in 2, with some bigger awards (guest actors, music, etc.,) announced the week before and not broadcast at all.
The talk about Widow’s Bay made me think of Barry, also a dark comedy that won numerous awards in the comedy category, including acting and directing for Bill Hader. And yes, it was quite violent and bloody. But hey, I watched all seasons of Game of Thrones!
They’ve done that for years
I think I need to rewatch, we liked it but there were times we were confused, not knowing g it was one of those shows you need to really pay attention to.
They’ve had two ceremonies for years but typically one ceremony was for the technical awards and one was for actors/shows, right? The split seemed different this year at least.
For at least a decade, if not longer, guest actors, reality shows, primetime games shows etc have been part of the Creative Arts program

Watched the 1st episode of Season 6 Slow Horses last night. It did not disappointed. This season looks to be a River Cartwright (Jack Lowden)’s show. Hopefully, he gets pick for a new James Bond.
As many of you know, Slow Horses show is based on a book series Slough House by Mick Herron. Mick has made cameo appearances on several seasons including this one. If you re-watch the scene in church, the man wearing glasses sitting on the same pew next to Lady Di/the First Desk, is Mick Herron. There were several shots of Lady Di on that scene. These were the clearest shots of Mick in all the episodes.
