From the pictures I’ve seen of Portland, it wasn’t exactly a party crowd. One woman had her windshield smashed as she was trying to get to the hospital in a pregnancy emergency, I believe. The crowd trapped her and yelled at her.
Businesses had their windows smashed and generally it wasn’t really safe to go downtown those nights.
^ Yeah, that’s no good… Shame on those people. Hate and violence really ruins the “Stop the Hate” message you are trying to convey.

$250,000 damage at a Toyota dealership from smashing cars.
I think all vandals (if cameras can catch them) should be sent a bill for all the damage they do.
Do you believe all the vandals were pro-Hillary? Whiners?
BB, I can’t find enough about the non-voting protesters. Just that thousands congregated and 39 or so of those arrested had not voted.
Absolutely do not believe that.
That sounds like the WTO riots of 1999. The kid in a Nike shoe smashing the Nike sign was not part of the demonstration that was protesting certain WTO policies.
Unless the businesses who had windows broken and cars smashed have very good security cameras, we may not know who the vandals were. I do think that a lot of this would stop if they were sent bills, that (if they couldn’t or wouldn’t pay) would follow them as liens on paychecks and other penalties until the cost was paid. No one should be able to break things or graffiti and get away with no punishment.
Amazing, the switch once again from discussing the sending of hate-filled messages, personally and via email, to the discussing of protests.
Yes, and the small minority of violent “protestors” at that.
So where is the indignation over the harassment of white students at Cal, or the outrage over the “no whites allowed” event at Columbia. Or is it only certain racist and hate-filled messages and comments that offend you?
“I think all vandals (if cameras can catch them) should be sent a bill for all the damage they do.”
There is no way to assess the damage done by those who sent the emails, or who would do such things. That bill, no matter how one decided to itemize the costs, could never be paid, anyway.
“Or is it only certain racist and hate-filled messages and comments that offend you?” a
Not at all. This thread is not about * those. [i/]
Any time it happens, every time it happens, and emanates from racial hatred, it offends. Do not doubt it.
Link legitimate news reports, and I will be outraged about the harassment that is being reported. Harassment is wrong, no matter who is the target.
@musicprnt, the popular vote margin for HRC isn’t 500,000, but, as of a couple of days ago, was nearly 1,000,000, and growing every day as absentee ballots, etc. are counted. See, e.g., http://cookpolitical.com/story/10174 and http://www.cnn.com/election/results.
Which is a major part of the point of these demonstrations that seem to be so mystifying to some of you: to remind the President-elect and his supporters that he not only lost the popular vote, but lost it by a far wider margin than any other president who did so, and can’t under any circumstances claim a popular mandate for his policies. And to remind him that those who oppose him aren’t rolling over (any more than the other side did 4 or 8 years ago when they were trounced in both the popular vote and electoral college), but plan to fight him tooth and nail every step of the way.
And to remind the many people in this country who justifiably fear the future that they’re not alone.
I can’t provide the link here, but if anyone wants to understand the actual scale of the epidemic of threats, harassment and intimidation against marginalized populations in the last week, read the journalist Shaun King’s twitter feed, where he’s been collecting the various reports.

Here is an article about the columbia incident:
http://college.usatoday.com/2016/10/05/yes-columbia-is-hosting-a-retreat-for-students-of-color/
The claim it is ‘whites only’ apparently is coming from right wing groups, Columbias website said that while the focus of the retreat was for students of color, that they did not bar students who were white from going. It goes on to say that the whites only policy was inferred by conservative student groups.
The 'anti white harassment" at Cal
https://■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/pulse/youve-been-lied-anti-white-protests-uc-berkeley-kunal-kerai
Note that the ‘harassment’ were claims they were only letting non white students through, when they weren’t letting anyone except disabled people through…not surprising, the big promoters of the anti white harassment were fox news, breitbart et al.
It is really hard to process what it going on right now. Over the week-end the chief of the LAPD went on record as stating they will not cooperate with any effort to deport law abiding illegal immigrants.
New York City’s Mayor is on CNN at the moment saying he just left a meeting with the president-elect and he stated he informed Trump that the NYPD would not cooperate either.
Students at Cal are used to protests at Sather Gate. They don’t usually block the gate, but do make it a bit uncomfortable getting by. There are numerous other ways to cross the creek. When we toured, there were protest groups on both sides of the Israeli settlement issue facing off along with a bunch of student body officer candidates. Protests are basically “a stop on the tour” along with explaining why all the double doors on campus only have one handle (so they can’t be chained shut).
A threat to shutoff Federal funds would probably change their minds very quickly. Don’t be surprised if that happens.
By itself, there is nothing racist about wanting to deport illegal immigrants. Whenever conservatives are strongly in favor of this, whenever this topic comes up on the NY Times, you will find many liberals comments supporting it as well. If the rhetoric had stopped there, I would cheer him on. But it goes much further, which I find disturbing.
The mayor of Minneapolis said that the city will adjust its budget as necessary to account for the loss of federal funds if the threat is made good on.
I missed the irony in this the first time I quoted this above. If the chief of the LAPD can’t see the irony, is he really qualified to be police chief?
Which mayor is going to block the federal government from deporting illegal aliens who have committed felonies? Which police chief is going to support that?
