Blizzard in Midwest

Never heard of a thunder snow storm – wow. We’re supposed to get heavy rain and mountain snow tomorrow and possibly snow in the valley if it’s cold enough. The usual vague forecast around here :)

I don’t know about you all, but I’m ready for spring. It was beautiful last weekend and now I’m done with rain, snow and cold.

BTW: Would you say Missouri is a midwestern or southern state? We have a debate raging in our house.

Definitely midwest.

Aqua, they drove straight though last Friday and they didn’t even leave Boston until after 8p. This was after being up all day, taking exams, etc., and then driving from Lewiston (ME) to downtown Boston to drop off roommate #3 and then going to roommate #2’s house in a suburb. I was a nervous wreck the whole time and didn’t sleep a wink. They arrived at 7pm on Saturday and actually thought they might go out for the night. I strongly suggested they might want to get a good night’s sleep instead.

They feature Missouri in Midwest Living magazine so it must be. :)

Thundersnowstorm - we’ve had those. Weird - you are looking at winter and hearing summer!

Agent99

Missouri is definitely midwest. I grew up in southern Iowa (just THAT far from Missouri) and I find it odd to think of them maybe being a southern state.

4beardolls and srw must be near me, too. This morning was thundersnow and lightening! It’s stopped snowing now; don’t know if we’re done or if there’s just a lull.

I always think of Missouri as Southern because it was a slave state. That, and they talk funny (like those of us descended from the Scandinavians don’t).

Agentninetynine–depends, if you live say north of Iowa, MO is a southern state, if you are south of MO, you probably think it’s Midwest. If you live in NYC–where’s MO?

ordinarylives-I agree–south of the Mason/Dixon is a southern state.

I grew up in Maryland, and none of my family nor anyone I knew considered Maryland to be a southern state.

How are all of you managing from that big 3’ storm - did much of that melt? I got about 5 inches here with that one, heavy stuff that was piled up at the end of the drive and froze while we slept. I went out and attempted to chip the last of it away today so that my snowblower won’t hit it tomorrow, but only had limited success. At least the days are getting longer!

this snow can’t keeping coming every weekend for much longer, spring break is in less than a month

^ [April Fool’s Day Blizzard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](1997 April Fool's Day blizzard - Wikipedia)

Third biggest storm in Boston history.

Never say never. ;)

Missouri was technically a border state - slave states that never joined the Confederacy (along with Kentucky and Maryland). But, now I think it is considered Midwest. My “son of the confederacy” grandfather sent my mom (in St. Louis) money so she could come back home to Arkansas to have her babies. Didn’t want any d— Yankee babies in his family! She declined.

And sorry bout all the snow. We’re sunny and 65 here in Texas.

I remember that April Fools Day storm. There was also one in late March '93. We had 25" or so.

The jet is in a very favorable location right now for waves of storms to hit the NE. :(

DD has been working in Wichita since June and they have gotten a lot of snow since yesterday. They had thunder snow last night. According to the meteorologist there, they have 14" so far and, when I spoke with DD about 30 minutes ago, it was still coming down hard. She has to drive to Kansas City this weekend for a flight here for meetings next week. I hope it clears quickly!

This storm is a bummer for my son. He was accepted to Washington University in St. Louis for a PhD program and was to fly there tonight for a recruiting event. His flight was cancelled and now he and the school are scrambling trying to figure out how to reschedule. His next two weekends are already booked with similar events at Pitt and USC. I hope it gets worked out OK, I know that Wash U was pretty high on his list and the fellowship/stipend they offerred him is pretty good. Travel this time of year is so dicey! I hope everyone stays warm and safe through the storm.

Schools closed for tomorrow.
We had over a foot of snow today and more expected this evening/night. Biggest snowfall in 20 years. Virtually no snow last winter and so far this winter. We had to dig out the boots and shovels. Thunder snow this morning was freaky!
Missouri is an interesting state–where north meets south and east meets west. Big contrast between cotton, rice and southern accents in the boot -heel. Corn, wheat, and severe winters in the northwest. (Think about the difference between Memphis and Omaha.)
Pretty much everyone would call MO Midwest, though the Ozark culture in the S/SW part of the state gives it a more southern feel.

To me Missouri is a southern state. Don’t know why, maybe it’s because I’m so far north! Love thundersnow when I’m home and safe. I’ve heard 1-2 inches and 2-4 inches…the storm is supposed to me south of “me.” My sib is flying back to the US through Newark tomorrow. Hope it happens.

I’m ashamed to admit that I’ve never been to the midwest. I’ve flown over it many, many times. Once my H retires, we will have to take a trip to explore that part of the country. Our travel has mainly been limited to either the east or west coast.

Thunder snow is a neat thing to experience. The thunder is actually muffled by the snow. A few years back when we had a snowstorm that dumped about 3 feet of snow, we had extremely heavy snowfall (2-4 inches per hour) during an episode of thunder snow. Picture pouring rain that you have during a typical thunderstorm, but it’s snow instead.

aquamarinesea, you need to listen to the song FlyOver States I think…

I’m tired of this winter stuff… it’s costing me money today! And tomorrow already. I’ve pretty well slept all afternoon because you can’t really go anywhere. I got off work at 12:30 this afternoon instead of getting done at 9:30PM or later…
