Yesterday morning I discovered blood in my urine. I was at the doctor in the afternoon for urine analysis. She said there is protein present, which is apparently not good, but it could just be due to the blood. No white cells, which is good. Perhaps someone here in the medical field understands why. She didn’t seem overly worried. My stomach was soft ( apparently medically good.). I feel achy like you do when on your period, but not bad at all. Tops of my thighs are achy.
I go tomorrow for a Catscan of my abdomen and pelvic region. She referred me to a urologist.
Has anyone experienced this and what was the issue. I’m trying to just be calm, but of course I’m worried.
Common occurrence for those with kidney stones. Also occurs in athletes, especially boxers & football players, who have suffered a strong hit to the kidney area. Both are temporary, usually minor incidents. But, I am not a doctor & am a guy so take my knowledge FWIW.
Because you are under medical care & the doctor is not worried, it is probably a minor issue.
You are doing the right thing by having further tests done.
I guess I would think there would be blood initially, than go away. I’ve been drinking lots of water, which I typically do. But it hasn’t stopped, although sometimes worse than others. Crossing fingers.
My son had some blood in his urine when we went in for high fever and back pain. It ended up being pneumonia (not that you have that), and his urine culture was clear, she said that the blood was not a sign of anything to worry about. Glad you are under a doctor’s care, but in our case, the blood was just “innocent.”
If you were passing a kidney stone, you’d almost certainly have severe pain. Having had kidney stones probably 2-3 dozen times, I can tell you that it’s not just an achy feeling. I fainted once from the pain. It’s relentless, worse than labor pains. I hope that it isn’t what is causing the blood in your urine and also that you discover the cause with the further tests.
Alwaysamom. I was trying to avoid freaking her out if that was what was happening. I went to the urgent care who assumed it was a uti. By the next afternoon I was in the er and a few days later having surgery. Anytime now I get even the slightest twinge I start to panic.
You should remain calm. If it was serious, your doctor probably would have admitted you rather than schedule you a day or two later for further testing.
Also, one can experience blood in urine due to a kidney stone passing through one’s system, yet feel no pain. A stone can be small, yet still sharp enough to cause blood in urine.
Regardless, you are okay since your doctor did not admit you, nor did the urologist schedule you for immediate emergency testing.
Sorry to hear. I’m a Nurse Practitioner. Are you diabetic? High Blood Pressure? Other medical problems- UTI’s etc? Medications? Fever? Pain? Assuming Post-menopausal? Vigorous exerciser?
@conmama, sorry I didn’t explain why I asked if you were a runner-I was in the middle of making dinner when I asked. Dh had blood in his urine when we were first married. After tests didn’t show anything, The doctor asked if he had been running long distances (he had). I don’t remember the name of the conditions, something to do with marching soldiers. Apparently when you run (or march!) for long distances and your bladder is empty, it can cause the bladder to jostle too much, which can cause blood in the urine. I guess it was a condition frequently seen in marching soldiers during the world wars. Her suggestion was to make sure that he did not fully empty his bladder before running.
I’m sure I’m probably not explaining it medically correctly. It happened 20+ years ago. In any case, it doesn’t pertain to you unless you participate in some other activity that might have your empty bladder bouncing around too much. Hope they figure out what might be causing it.
This happened to me after I had a regular 24-hour stomach bug. Viruses can do weird things to your body. That one gave me glomurular nephritis. The blood was noticeable for a couple of weeks but was still present microscopically for a year or so.
I had an exam (cystoscopy?), where they thread a little light into your bladder through your urethra to look for possible cancer. It was very easy to do, but I avoided it for a couple of months because I was scared. It was easy and quick!
There was no treatment for the nephritis, just checkups every 3 months and then every 6 months by a kidney doc. He would check my urine and order blood work and it eventually cleared up.
I picked up the virus on a college visit, lol. They can be a hazard.
@greenwich, thanks for letting me know about the cystoscope. I’m a real weeny with this sort of thing, so that helps alleviate worry. I can’t wait to get this checked out tomorrow.
