Blood in my urine.

I had the bladder scope procedure and scan for blood in urine, turned out to be cysts in my kidney which they don’t do anything about (benign). The scope thing sounded scary but was fine (not painful at all). The scan, an MRI with contrast, was more uncomfortable (and I wasn’t allowed to eat beforehand). I don’t do well with IVs. I remember showing up for the scope thing at the urologist right after getting the scan (both in the same building) and telling the nurse I was going to faint. She came rushing out with OJ for me to drink. She scolded me for not having eaten anything and I told her I wasn’t allowed to! I probably should have brought food to eat immediately after the scan.

I’ve had hemorrhagic cystitis three times (UTI with lots of bleeding) in the past year. Antibiotics kicked in within a couple hours. Doc did a CT scan and the cystoscopy. The cystoscopy was a five minute procedures, not painful at all. It’s good the doc is doing a CT scan; it will pick up kidney stones.

Hope you feel better soon and that the tests show this is minor.

I had microscopic blood in my urine over two repeated urinalysises. At my doctor’s recommendation I had a bladder ultrasound and a bladder cytoscopy to rule out any possibility of bladder cancer, although all along my doctor told me that was a very low likelihood. And she was right, everything is fine and they have no root cause to which to attribute the microscopic blood.

I found both procedures, the ultrasound and cytoscopy, to really be no big deal other than the inconvenience of having to get them done. For me, the cytoscopy was basically about as uncomfortable, physically and in terms of general awkwardness, as a normal gynecological internal exam.

NSAID usage can cause blood in urine. Have you been consuming them lately?

Wow, thank you all for your experiences! I feel better it’s probably something minor. @doschicos, yes, was taking a lot of ibuprofen about 10 days before this started. I stoved 2 fingers hurrying around. I was probably taking much more than I should, about 1600 mg per day. I haven’t had any for about a week now.

My husband had blood in his urine and it turned out to be two kidney stones. He’d had a little lower back pain the week before, but it had gone away. He had two day surgeries to get the stones removed, one at a time. Expensive but fairly easy to go through.

Kidney stones cause blood in the urine and it is absolutely possible for that to be the only symptom— I have seen it.

I’ve had lots of kidney issues and occasionally have blood in my urine. There can be several causes, so I’m not going to alarm you. You probably had a urinalysis done, as well as a culture, which would catch an infection. I’d give it a few days and see what happens. If you’re not in pain, if it goes away, and/or if your doctor isn’t worried, then I see no reason for you to be.

I woke up one morning in November with an achy feeling in my abdomen. When I wiped, there was blood on the paper. I almost lost it, because that hasn’t happened in over 11 years. I got into the PA at my doctor’s office. She suspected a UTI or kidney stones, but she leaned toward the UTI. She did a culture & bingo (several days later) … that was it. There is a type of UTI that women who are “a few years” into menopause can get, and that was what I had.

@conmama I hope the scan went well today and that you now have an answer. Sending good thoughts.

Eating beets can turn urine reddish also.

Thanks for all the support. I had my scan today with contrast. I’m sure I won’t hear anything until Monday. I hope it’s not later than that. I’ll let everyone know as soon as I find out.

The kicker is that I met my $5k deductible in 2018 and was getting everything done I could think of. And then this on 1/2. Sigh.

Me too! Non-routine colonoscopy on 1/4 - bye-bye money! FWIW, I have had blood in my urine on several screenings. They scoped my bladder (painless) and didn’t see anything. It comes and goes, some years I have a little, some years I don’t. I bleed and bruise easily, so that might have something to do with it.

Wouldn’t blood in urine be a typical symptom of bladder or kidney cancer, although it could be due to other things?

^^Yes, blood in the urine is a common first sign of bladder cancer. That’s why they do a lot of cystoscopies - to look for any signs of cancer or other source of bleeding in the bladder… But as you suggest, there are many other causes of blood in the urine besides cancer. so it’s too soon to freak out about cancer until the lesion is actually sighted.

This happened to me about 6 mos ago - I was quite worried as I’m about 8 years post menopausal. Doctor got me in immediately and did a sonagrsm and the technician immediately spotted the problem… a Uteran polyp. She said they are not infrequent and almost always benign. They leave the polyp but do a cervical cancer check (hurts like hell when they take the tissue). Path report came back clean. Of course we are all guessing until you see the doctor.

“Wouldn’t blood in urine be a typical symptom of bladder or kidney cancer, although it could be due to other things?”

Oh god. Let’s scare OP some more! OP is already on pins and needles. The non-cancer causes of blood in urine are much, much more common than cancer!

I just right now got an email from the doc with my tests! Everything came back normal!! So, she will set me up with the urologist now. Wouldn’t the scan have caught cancer? I have that question out to the doc, but maybe you guys know.

My mom had clots in her bladder caused by recurrent bladder and UT infections. They could have been removed via a catheter, but had surgery due to her personal situation. Worrisome because of her age and overall health and mental state, but not a serious condition.

Congratulations ! Really happy for you !
