And you wonder why some people are skeptical of global warming… :))

Maybe Ireland is voting hard for the "MC"Boatface option.

Thanks for posting. Just reading boaty Mcboatface makes me laugh out loud! “You work at sea?” “Yes, I work on the Boaty Mcboatface.” I hope they let it happen.

Just read they might overrule it: http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-35861444

It’s a great name. I can’t even say it without laughing out loud. Come on, the news about global warming is grim and serious, but that doesn’t mean we can’t name a ship Boaty McBoatface.

^ What makes it even better is that it’s actually the “R.R.S. Boaty McBoatface”

:))

Note to self: If you have a naming contest, be careful how you structure it.

That said, I vote for Boaty McBoatface.

“Lord West, a former British sea lord in charge of the U.K.'s navy, said the organizers had set up the voting system expecting voters to be “mainly marine research fans” who would come up with more serious names.”

“Mainly marine research fans” have (a) a sense of humor and (b) a bunch of friends and family with a sense of humor. I think it is hilarious.

Perfect example of how wonderful British sense of humor can be.

You can check out the other suggested names here:

The other names are just boring compared to Boaty McBoatface.

I too am finding the name hilarious. Can’t stop laughing. Sounds like something a late night talk show host would have suggested.

I love the name, and I’d totally vote for it.

This is exactly the kind of goofy news that we need today!

There are some other good ones in the “Most loved overall” category.

My second favorite is probably “RRS Big Metal Floaty Thingy-thing” lol

A few years back, apparently Stephen Colbert “won” a contest to have a new bridge in Hungary named after him. It was a serious contest and of course his fans flooded the ballot box. The prime minister (?) of Hungary wound up appearing on the show, said (in jest) that unfortunately the winner needed to speak Hungarian and gave him $50 worth of H currency, which Colbert then tried to bribe him with.

Trainy McTrainface: More fun in Britain, on a day, as -someone upthread said, we badly need a smile.

I just voted. It’s fun that there are so many different names submitted. I didn’t vote for Boaty.

I am laughing so hard at these. I hope they actually use the name, even if it’s Boaty McBoatface.

I’m not a Lindsay Graham lover but at least he has a sense of humor. I’m watching the Daily Show and he’s a guest tonight. He just finished saying he should change his name to Votey McVoteface and maybe he’d do better in the next election.

I voted for Boaty McBoatface. Although Gnarly Narwhal was a good one too. There are nearly 5000 entries!
