Bombing hits BostonMarathon

Apparently there was also a strong resemblance to the missing Brown student. There are a remarkable number of likenesses among people from various parts of the world. Equally without significance.

GMT, my brother and family are in lock-down and he said that he is thinking of getting a gun after this. (I hope not but don’t blame him) I am worried about them since they live in a tall condo building with huge glass windows all around. They are on the first floor with windows facing the front of the building and street.

Why do you think you know that? Maybe the younger one was the dominant personality in the relationship? Maybe aliens came down from Mars and influenced both them and their third cousin’s wife’s nephew.

“Why do you think you know that? Maybe the younger one was the dominant personality in the relationship? Maybe aliens came down from Mars and influenced both them and their third cousin’s wife’s nephew.”

Wow…the possibilities are endless, aren’t they?

Just heard one was a second year medical student? So much for the screening, interviewing, etc. Which med school?

As for guns, yes,. We felt the same way during the riots. The police had too much too handle. People had to protect themselves.

I love logic (not necessarily in this thread, but what I’m seeing this morning). An immigrant does something? Blame all the immigrants! No more! A gun owner does something bad? Oh clearly it’s just THAT one. The rest of us are fine.

It’s amazing how well we can demonize the “other”. I’m not against guns, I’m against prejudice. Law abiding people are welcome to own guns.

Now I’ll step down and focus on the situation unfolding.

Well, leanid, I am going with the fact that the third cousin’s wife’s nephew and HIS neighbor’s boyfriend’s math tutor are the two guys stopped at Niagara Falls.

If these two men are legitimately the culprits, then it is right to “blame the immigrants.” Not all immigrants, but “the immigrants.” At this time of immigration reform being prioritized in the Congress, this is the PERFECT time to discuss immigration.

Still a lot of conflicting information being reported. How can a high school classmate have known him since age 14 if he and brother immigrated to Massachusetts a year ago?

In any event, someone in government authority has some explaining to do. Namely, how do two under-age persons immigrate from Checnya (Spelling), a region with a horrific recent history of violence/terrorism without adult connections? Obviously someone had to sponsor them.

lilmom may or may not be correct, but what she said about the older one being dominant does have some support from psychologists. On TV yesterday one analyzed the the photo of the two walking down the street, and said that to someone versed in these things that the one in front walked more purposefully in front, while the one in back showed body language of being the “follower”. So again, may not be correct, but at least not so off the wall that it warrants being mocked.

ZM, I said blame ALL immigrants, not just the ones who obviously did this. HUGE difference.

Let’s not forget that the Guy with the Cowboy Hat was an immigrant also.

There are lots of bad people whether immigrant or not. There are also lots of good people, immigrant and not.

The odds of this situation happening are infinitesimal. The odds of a gun being used against someone in the household where it is kept are substantial.

I am posting this from the lockdown area. Offices, schools, public transportation, Amtrak, taxis etc. all closed for now. We are safe at home, listening to events unfold on NPR in between participating in conference calls for work (life goes on…) and respond to emails from concerned family and friends. I have colleagues who are in the epicenter of the search area who are texting photos of storm troopers in combat armor and with assault weapons in their yards. It’s scary and surreal.

Having said all that, I will wholeheartedly support government programs that offer aid and
support for education of promising young students from any and every background. If we back away from this we have lost one of the things that makes us strong and free.

And, FWIW, I know that having a gun in my home would not protect me from random acts of extreme violence–and in fact there’s good evidence that it would make me much more likely to be a victim of gun violence.

This is a frightening and unusual situation. But we have to be confident and thoughtful in our response. We will get through this.

"how do two under-age persons immigrate from Checnya (Spelling), a region with a horrific recent history of violence/terrorism without adult connections? Obviously someone had to sponsor them. "

Mother was arrest last year for shoplifting.
Uncle is being quoted on the news.

Of course we shouldn’t blame all immigrants. God forbid. Just like we shouldn’t blame all immigrants for cartel activity. But as citizens and mature people, we should be able to discuss such an important issue and respect that with regard to something so complicated, different people will have different perspectives.

The media and talking heads have been so stellar in their coverage thus far that they are able to analyze people that hadn’t been identified yet?

Thank you, 3. Please stay safe and keep us updated.

The only person “casting aspersions” on people here was the poster fulminating incoherently about “these terrorists,” apparently referring to every single immigrant from Chechnya and/or who’s Muslim. And, no, excluding people from this country based on religion or nationality is NOT a legitimate subject for discussion. Not here or anywhere. There’s a rather repulsive history of such exclusions here, including the quota system instituted in 1924 that effectively prevented hundreds of thousands of Jews (and others) from saving their lives by coming here when it was still possible to do so.

My boss, who was brought to this country on a scholarship from a terror sponsoring country about a decade-ish ago, is sitting in his office crying. There are a lot of people like him who contribute so much and are crushed by the actions of these monsters for different reasons. It is very ugly all around.
