Bombing hits BostonMarathon

I think many of us here will had a connection to this event in some way…so many college students there, and many parents of the students here on CC…plus Boston is such an awesome city

I had no idea. I didn’t work today and have spent the day at home with no TV on. Shocked and sad.

To hear that one of the dead is an 8 year old child … and also to know that some of the Newtown families were sitting in the VIP section near the finish … it is almost more than I can bear.

Prayers for everyone.
Someone just tweeted a photo of the 8 yr old girl killed. Dont know if it is truly her. So tragic.

My DH is a runner and many of his running buddies are employees of our track club or very active members. All that were in Boston are accounted for, fortunately, but its so horrible.

On a different vein, I had to drop off checks (to pay to Uncle Sam and the state) at the Post office this afternoon, and had put Christmas stamps on the envelopes. But I decided to get the envelopes certified, so it needed the extra postage. The clerk at the PO said that my xmas stamps were appropriate because its surely the season of giving!! (til it hurts). Was nice to be able to smile in an otherwise painful day.

Canp- Newtown families there- OMG didn’t know this -------so so so sad

Boston Globe says a boy. Lots of misinformation at this point. I have also heard varying reports of who if anyone has been detained.

There are conflicting reports about whether it’s true that someone is in custody and/or being questioned as a possible witness. Denied, confirmed, denied, etc., depending on which media outlet you look at. There always seem to be a great many news reports the first day of something like this, that later turn out to be false.

Every single “news report” I see citing an Saudi individual links back to the Post which has been discredited by the police. Can anyone link anything reputable?

On Chris Matthews’ show just now they had a terrorism expert (sorry, didn’t catch the name) who said there really is no way to know whether it was a “lone wolf” who saw some significance in this day (Patriots’ Day, tax day), someone from one of the usual-suspect terrorism organizations, or the work of a new group that hasn’t been identified yet. I just hope people don’t rush to judgment before the facts are in.

^reminds me of all the mis info that came out that day of Sandy Hook as well.

^ here: [Boston Police: No Arrests Have Been Made In Marathon Bombing | TPM LiveWire](<a href=“Category: News - TPM – Talking Points Memo”>Category: News - TPM – Talking Points Memo)

No suspects in custody. You are correct The NY Post has been discredited (shocking).

I live near the 23 mile mark of the marathon (Lergnom and are neighbors!) and Beacon Street (the marathon route) near our home is still closed … I assume because they are still checking the route.

cBS and NBC are both reporting that. But you do make a good point. Perhaps people should keep their guts quiet until more is known.

Yes snowdog, resports are saying a boy but this phot and report of a girl is being tweeted all over the place, along with a horrible photo of someone who lost a leg. They also said the other death was an older woman. Who knows.

One thing that confuses me-- they said no runners were injured but the video they replay on the news clearly shows a guy going down. Reports say he was hit by shrapnel. Dont know if any of this is credible yet.

Chris Matthews spent a multiple nights claiming that white supremacists were killing judges in Texas. It turned out to be the acts of a lawyer. Matthews is NOT a reliable news source- he just fills air time speculating on things that fit his world view.

I agree that we dont know what is going on. I have seen reports that the Saudi who is in custody in the hospital is cooperating, so it it totally plausible it isnt him.

Daily Mail has a picture of a different guy being handcuffed by police.

[Boston Marathon explosions: Suspect being ‘held in hospital’ with severe injuries while another man is pictured in handcuffs | Mail Online](<a href=“Boston Marathon bombing suspect: Police raid home linked to burned Saudi student 'acting suspiciously' | Daily Mail Online”>Boston Marathon bombing suspect: Police raid home linked to burned Saudi student 'acting suspiciously' | Daily Mail Online)

ZM, I see the CBS one now. That’s the first one I’ve seen without a Post reference and they’re just saying he was taken for questioning as he was “acting suspicious”.

I just wish reporters weren’t allowed to do things like that. I remember during Sandy Hook when they released the name of someone who wasn’t even remotely involved in the shooting and then someone who the same name and location of THAT person was harassed until the confusion was cleared up.

The weirdo they arrested was a justice of the peace at one point, Alan Dershowitz he’s not - and the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas had been investigated by a task force that included the office of the murdered DA. I’m not a Matthews fan but in that case the speculation didn’t seem totally irresponsible.

argbargy, just stop. This was a terrorism expert, not CM himself postulating about what happened. And AS I WROTE, the guy himself said it could be any number of people with any number of motives. EVERYONE is speculating at this point.

jym, I think that guy might have just collapsed from shock and exhaustion. I have seen people fall like that at the end of marathons, The explosion could have just been more than he could take.
