Bombing hits BostonMarathon

Homeowner went out to smoke a cigarette. Saw shrink-wrapped cover of his boat torn open. Put ladder up against boat, climbed up, and saw blood and blood stained clothes. Called police.

Police surrounded yard. Not sure when or how the gunfire started. But, state police had an infrared sensor on a helicopter that ID’d a warm body in the boat. Then, they sent in one of the massive bomb trucks, which used a robot arm to rip the shrink wrap cover completely off the boat. See state police photos here:

I haven’t heard any coherent story about the gunfire when the police discovered the Islamic terrorist hiding in the boat. I don’t know if he started that or if it was police trying to flush him out.

I think he was in pretty bad shape by that point. Not much fight left in him…

I just came back to this thread to congratulate you. It does indeed take an herculean effort to gloss over several posts that have corrected you on this issue. How many times will you refer to the hearsay report of the NYTimes and ignore the LIVE comments made by Deveau to Wolf Blitzer or the full transcript I linked to in THE EARLY AFTERNOON?

It it because the facts do not support your own version, or that you enjoy being contradictory.

/sigh!

NH probably has the least level of handgun regulation in New England but they would have had to pass a background check and be over 21. The older brother wouldn’t have been able to buy from a dealer if he was convicted of domestic violence. This is a purchase from a Federal Firearms Licensee. They could have done a private purchase. There are rules for that too but I wouldn’t be surprised if they are not strictly followed. My guess is that they got them illegally in MA. There’s a fair amount of handgun crime in MA and I’d guess that it’s not hard to get a handgun illegally.

I saw a handgun training session (multiple people) where a laser sight was used at a target 30 feet away. People were seated at a table with the handgun held with both hands pointed at the target. You would not believe how much the laser target moved all over the place despite the students trying to keep it steady with both hands. This was under ideal circumstances with ear and eye protection and lots of time to set up for each shot.

The police officers presumably had a lot more training and they didn’t fatally wound either of the brothers - so I’m think that the brothers did have some significant training.

I’d agree with you there.

I guess that’s the difference between someone that has studied data communications and someone that hasn’t. One of the limiting factors in bandwidth in analog communications (voice) is the amount that you can communicate in a given amount of time. We can read far faster than someone can speak. Many police cars are equipped with data terminals where there is far more bandwidth available for communications but it isn’t practical to read the screen while you’re driving unless there’s another officer in the car to do this.

Well I hope they follow up on #1640 as well. I find explosives especially scary as they are so destructive, unpredictable and anonymous.

I am not following you at all. Because I merely asked where you had heard about them tracking the SUV by cell phone doesn’t mean I dismissed it as nonsense. If you read other posts I said I had no reason not to believe Capt. Deveau’s version of the events.

Where I disagree is your assertion that the police should have acted differently when they spotted the SUV.

I posted the article because of what it said about the police issuing an ABP after the owner told the police he had been hijacked by the bombers. It doesn’t mean because they didn’t mention the cell phone tracking in the article that it didn’t occur. I am assuming they did both things. You are certainly free however to dismiss the information about them issuing the APB. It’s no skin off my teeth what information you choose to believe or not.

I think the Kenmore square “bomb” turned out to be a false alarm. I have no idea about the Charles Gate incident.

I wonder what the two Islamic jihad bros were planning to blow up Thursday night? They loaded up the car with pipe bombs and another pressure cooker bomb. I wonder if the MIT policeman they murdered stumbled across them starting to bomb the Strata Center?

Scanner audio. It’s 41 minutes.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/27723601/firefightcombined.mp3

Excellent example of low-bandwidth communications. Communications ranged from one or two words to about 15 words. It appears that there wasn’t a connection made between the MIT shooting to the Marathon Bombers over the scanners. The dispatcher also complained to the cars that they were stepping on each other in communications.

BTW, no mention of cell phone tracking.

Police officer says: “I need long guns!”

The MIT cop was not doing anything. Per the WaPo and some others, video shows them walk up to the car, talk to the cop in his car and then pull a gun and shoot him in the head.

That just makes me incredibly sad. What a waste.

I have seen mention that the finish line was swept with dogs before the race and before the winners crossed. The bombing time happened to be after the sweep was already done. Coincidence.

FBI and Brookline police arrived about 28 minutes after this started. It feels like Watertown Police were trying to figure out what to do. (28: - 30:). They set up the perimeter. 30: - 32: description of a rape report. 34:46 - setting up for a staging area. Looks like the work was in setting up a perimeter up to here. 41:00 talk about getting various LE heads to meet.

It seems the bombers saw being terrorists as their chosen path to power and notoriety. I could picture them targeting MIT as one of the symbols they envy/hate. Killing the poor MIT officer would be a symbolic show of this twisted power while simultaneously triggering the manhunt, an opportunity to throw the same pressure cooker bomb used in the marathon bombing, a dramatic, YES it’s us, as they did in bragging to the carjack victim that they were the marathon bombers. Possibly why they let him live, so he could tell the police, It’s them. They got off on this destruction, you can see it in terrorist 2’s twitter posts. No empathy here. This was hateful, despicable and cowardly.

If you read one of the posts above, you’ll see that he escaped at a gas station and asked the clerk to call 911.

"A few hundred yards up, a Mercedes sport utility vehicle had just pulled into the Shell at River Street, where two gas stations compete along Memorial Drive. From the Mobil across the way, a night clerk watched one man get out of the car and walk into the Shell station. Police would later identify him from surveillance tape as the younger of the two suspects. The carjacking victim got out and bolted across the street. He rounded the counter, ducked down and begged the night clerk to call 911, an employee said. "

BC:

Thanks for that link. That was all the scanner traffic before I started listening the other night. It answered a major question that I had been unable to find – where the Islamic Jihadist #2 drove the stolen Mercedes to after running over his brother. I had figured out that he had not driven it far before jumping out. But, hearing the location (Spruce and Lincoln), it’s clear that the police set up the perimeter in the wrong place and conduced their house to house search in the wrong place. They focused on the area around the original shootout (where Islamic Jihadist #1 was killed) rather than where the second one abandoned the Mercedes – which was outside the search perimeter, but just a block or two from the boat.

I had been wondering all day how he got from the original scene to the boat, because he would have had to have walked past where all the huge media presence was at School, Arsenal, and Walnut.

One officer is heard begging for a perimeter around 98 Spruce St (where the Mercedes was dumped), but he was ignored and the permeter was set up where Watertown police requested (the orginal site). They wasted a lot of time with the poor guy face down by the Bedrosian Funeral Home and the naked guy (who were totally unrelated to any of this).

He was only about a quarter-mile to a third-mile from Spruce and Lincoln which makes sense as he was wounded - I assume the police looked over the car and should have found blood on it from his neck and leg wounds.

For those that want to look it up on a map, the firefight was at Laurel and Dexter and the Boat is at 67 Franklin St.

I heard someone asking to confirm that they had the SUV secured and asking where it was.

I used to play tennis at the Mt Auburn Club near the Arsenal Mall - the whole area has really been built up since the stone age.

I’m guessing he headed straight south from Spruce (98 Spruce was the exact location given on the scanner) and ended up in the parking lots of the industrial buildings on the south side of Walnut. The boat backyard backs up to one of those lots. i doubt he was just walking along any of the streets, like me out for a walk/jog before dinner!

The back window of the Mercedes was totally shot out. He was likely hit by a hail of gunfire as he drove over his brother and fled. I hope they charge him with the murder of his brother, just for good measure.

I saw one report today of neighbors checking out the lengthy blood stain where he dragged his brother after running over him. His brother was alive and on the ground getting cuffed when he ran over him.

He drove for perhaps a good minute and ran across two parking lots for a couple of minutes with blood dripping. Yep, that is not Bourne-like. And neither is the police work much like CSI or in the movies.

Little wonder the stories were nebulous. Just as those wonderful animated maps of CNN misleading. Where were the maps showing the abandoned SUV and the location of the battle?

Too bad Max Sennett is no longer available for THIS movie. They might have to let Quentin do it.

I had to do a little digging to get locations myself and I didn’t find out where the SUV landed until this evening. The FBI wasn’t on the scene and that scanner audio felt like pretty low tech police work. I would love to see their original search grid to see if it included an area around the SUV. If it didn’t, then the FBI should hire Idad as a consultant for common sense.

I don’t know why you are so cynical, Xiggi. There is good reason the story is murky. It resolved yesterday night. It’s unclear to me why the surviving brother was able to get away after the firefight, but there’s certainly not enough info to say the police should have been able to stop it. At this point, I think we should give them the benefit of the doubt.

In fairness, early on one of the local TV stations had their live shot set up at the intersections of Walnut/School/Arsenal. They showed a massive police presence headed up Walnut Street. They probably crossed his path at that point.

But, as the outlines of the official perimeter were set in preparation for daylight, it was all centered around East Watertown, east of School Street. They never went house to house west of School Street, at least based on the scanner chatter towards dawn and after.
