Bombing hits BostonMarathon

just watched Fareed Zakaria, they were discussing how Muslim youth may become alienated, and what we as a country may need to do differently to help with their assimilation. Personally I think providing a college education, healthcare etc. are wonderful ways to assist any young people in their assimilation and in their future success. I understand we need to look at the things that may have contributed to how did this happen, but for me it seemed to almost imply these bombers were victims, which I found offensive. They made choices to take despicable, hateful actions and they were not victims.

That is very frustrating to know. I hope this is eventually addressed.

I agree. This is the one thing it seems they got very wrong. The determination of where the perimeter would be, and who made that decision, would be very interesting to know. There are lots of questions, and I would hope that, after all the back-patting and congratulations on Friday night, there will be an examination of what transpired, what went right, and what went wrong, what could have been more efficiently and effectively done.

The helicopter/s had been in the air all day long. One has to wonder why the heat-seeking apparatus hadn’t been employed prior to the citizen calling 911 about finding the man in his boat. I think people realize the difficulty of coordinating and supervising such a large operation, but I do think that the questions need to be asked.

Zakaria says a lot of dumb things. The problem is we didnt cover full need.

Alwaysamom, FLIR is a great tool to locate the needle inside the haystack as long as you know the exact location of the haystack.

Do we know anything yet about where the suspects purchased their weapons?

I’d suggest that everyone listen to the scanner audio. It’s 41 minutes long but you can just listen for five minutes to see what a crude form of communication police radio is. If you listen to the whole thing, you don’t get a feel that anyone is in charge. The dispatcher appears to have priority but nobody appeared to be running the show.

Friday was a warm (low 70s) and sunny day and so you have the sun heating up objects which could make it harder for thermal imaging equipment to pick up a person. Perhaps that’s why it’s a lot more effective for spotting people at night.

Unfortunately, as we see over and over, people who are (or see themselves as) victims (or potential victims) often choose to become haters. The two categories are not mutually exclusive.

I think you are all assuming he was in the boat all day.

“We know he didn’t go straight to the boat,” said Watertown police chief Edward P. Deveau. “We found blood in the car he abandoned and we found blood in a house inside the perimeter. We had no information that he had gotten outside the perimeter, but it was very chaotic this morning. We had a police officer who was shot and bleeding.”

“We had a perimeter that we thought was solid and we did that but we were about one block away,” Deveau said."

Listen to BC’s audio Link- It is very enlightening.

BC I’m shocked that these communications are heard by the public. It could jeopardize the success of a mission if the bad guys listen in, too.

Logic would suggest you incease the perimeter if you don’t find the suspect. But, then, I’m not in criminal justice, so I have no idea if the reality is just counterintuitive.

It was crazy to shut down Boston for the one guy. But it probably made people feel better.

So many expert opinions here.

After seeing what the people of Boston went through this week, I am even more grateful that the NYPD has disrupted so many plots before they reached completion.

“Logic would suggest you increase the perimeter if you don’t find the suspect.”

But when do you do that? One hour after he escapes? Two hours? Five hours? Before you are all done searching everything in the existing perimeter?

Maybe where they found blood inside a house was on the opposite side of the perimeter nearest the boat.

I don’t think anyone knows enough to be making any kind of judgement on what the police/fbi/homeland security did or did not do.

Zoosermom - Are you suggesting that Boston somehow failed or that NYC is somehow shielded from future attacks? I don’t think anyone saw this coming since it seems they acted alone. Ok, sure, the older one was investigated but likely concern would have been attack on Russia.

ucb–I understand your point and certainly they may have believed themselves to be victims, my point is, I don’t think our current discourse needs to be about how our country should be looking at what we did to contribute to possibly alienating these bombers. First we don’t know that they felt alienated, or felt others alienated them. In fact it would seem their own family alienated older bomber following his taking on extremist beliefs.

We do need to understand more, but I don’t believe we are to blame for their hate. I would think the true victims of the bombings and killings would find that truly offensive.

No. I Know Emilybee. As I said, I’m not in criminal justice. So I’m not laying myself out as an expert, just saying it seems logical. But… Many things which seem logical don’t work, anyway. I mean, it’s hardly as if anyone can apply logic to what the terrorists actions are in any of this, although there may be some internal logic to it that the experts would know.

He had to be outside the perimeter fairly quickly as Walnut St was part of the perimeter and they had a lot of LE vehicles there in a hurry. It’s a pretty fast drive down along the river roads (both sides) to that area from Boston or Cambridge and there’s a Mass Pike exit nearby at Newton Corner for LE coming from the West or the East.

Even if he wasn’t in the boat all day, the perimeter was still the problem.

BCEagle. Can you repost your link to the radio audio. Thanks

We live our lives by logic. Sure, some may make an appeal to the great unknown or to expertise or experience but you will have people argue that 1 + 1 <> 2 if that’s their bias.
