@techmom99 – I remember the platforms being a huge fashion in the 70’s. My mom went to the closet and pulled out a pair of gorgeous black velvet platforms she had from the 40’s or 50’s. I’m sure they are still up there. What goes around comes around!
Did anyone else go to Charm School? It was offered at a department store; I think it was Davidson’s (now Macys) or Sears. My best friend and I went together where we learned to walk straight (with a book on our head), how to sit properly, as well as manners. We must have been in the 5th grade as I moved the next year. Not the same as my kids Cotillion Class offered at school, but I guess what was offered to girls in the 60’s!
Who else made collages with saying and pictures from magazine? I made a few for my boyfriend/now husband in high school and college. We still have them hidden in our closet as there are some very suggestive things on it
Wooden handled pocketbooks where you would button on different colored cloth covers to match your outfits. - many were reversible. I love my Dr. Scholls and clogs. When I was in grade school there were knit ponchos. We played with these little furry mice figures/dolls about 2-3 inches tall that came in a million different costumes and characters. Then there were prairie skirts with little floral patterns and puffed sleeve blouses. In middles and high school I remember CocaCola branded rugby shirts. Solid color V neck Venezia sweaters from The Limited were all the rage at my school and we would have a half dozen+ of the same sweater in all different colors. Then it was brightly patterned oversized sweaters with all sorts of geometric shapes and colors. White carpenter jeans and acid washed jeans - baggy with folded in ankles. BIG hair. I had thick curls so there was “Mane and Tail” deep conditioner that I believe was used on horses but you could buy in the drug store for hair as well - it did not smell good. I loved my bright blue mascara but would mix it up with teal sometimes!!! Oh boy! I thought I was hot stuff because my college age brother gave me (age 12-13) Paris by yves St Laurant perfume and I graduated from Loves babysoft that all my friends were wearing.
My first boyfriend must have bathed in Polo cologne because just thinking of him and I can still smell it!
This is fun.
Painter’s pants (middle school).
Gaucho pants and Frye boots (high school).
Long sweaters with shoulder pads worn over leggings and ankle boots (college).
And I can’t forget: clogs (wooden ones with woven leather uppers–there was a specific brand that was acceptable but I can’t remember what it was)
Dippity- doo!
@bamamom2021 those wooden handled bags were called Bermuda bags where I lived.
Madras.
I think they were stirrup pants, not leggings
Were the clogs Mia brand @NJSue ? I don’t think Dansko was a thing then.
Remember those body suit tops with the snaps at the crotch that you wore with hip-hugger jeans.
Nobody has mentioned tube tops and halter tops in the summer (to go with your short shorts)
@surfcity yes, stirrup pants! And Mia was the clog, I believe. They were Swedish, I think.
Anyone do Jane Fonda workouts that you listened to via tape recorder? Lots of memories doing this in the dorm floor lounge.
This is a great thread! So many memories from my childhood in the 70’s and my teen years in the 80s’.
I remember:
Spiral Perms (and using a multitude of products to NOT be frizzy)
Aqua Net or Rave hair spray
Wet N Wild make up (the eye liner was amazing and so cheap)
Banana Clips and those hair clips with the big bows
Giant earrings that hurt to wear
Lee Press On Nails
High waisted jeans that folded over at the top (usually they were button fly)
Ankle boots
Skidz pants
Long pearl necklaces
Someone up above mentioned Drakkar Noir. One of my first boyfriends wore Drakkar and it is still one of my favorite scents lol.
I really miss big hair lol. It was a really hard habit to break but when I think of all the time spent on perms, blow drying your hair upside down, curling your bangs (then spraying the heck out of them and using the hair dryer to dry the hair spray so they would be as high as possible) it was at least an hour or two a day just doing my hair and makeup lol.
Ah yes, Frye boots.
I moved from California to Maryland when I was in middle school.
When they said wear boots in winter, I didn’t realize I should NOT wear my Frye boots, with very slick soles.
I got off the school bus one day and promptly slid in the ice, and to this day remember everyone around me laughing. (It wasn’t funny to me then).
I remember getting my first paychecks in high school and going to the “expensive mall” and to an expensive/cool store (but I can’t remember the name of the store), and buying myself 2 sweaters.
Was Up Against the Wall a national chain? I remember getting a couple of pairs of jeans from there and thinking I was really cool.
I did this!
Boone’s Farm strawberry hill “wine” - Friday nights, before going ice skating with my best friends at the Ice Capades Chalet. We thought we were so cool.
Remember earth shoes? The sole was really thick at the toes and thinner at the heel. Supposedly they were supposed to be better for your posture and feet while walking?
They were lace-up shoes and made for both men and women.
I totally remember those sweaters from the Limited and also Gunne Sax dresses. My jr prom dress was this giant poufy pink tulle dress I got at the Gunne Sax outlet.
In high school I wore those drindle-style skirts. Not sure what to call them. They were ankle length and slim fit with pleats or a flare at the bottom.
What about tan-colored exercise/dance leggings you would wear with bright shiny leotards. I took a jazz dance class in high school and would wear that outfit!
Remember those stackable black rubber bracelets like what Madonna wore in Desperately Seeking Susan? Or the geometric plastic dangly earrings? The 80’s were the best.
Reeboks - the original ones
I swear my husband’s heel callouses are from his Earth shoes. I also had a pair, but didn’t wear them as often.
Boone’s Farm was a staple in high school. My father was in the liquor business; you would have thought I could have found something a bit more upscale
MorseLewis, I had all the traditional ballet gear. I was happy when I colluded wear a green top.
Mostly, I recallLadyBug & villager Clothes, circle pins with initials, and straw handbags with initials. ID bracelets were our gift to Boyfriends. We wore skirts thru HS, so colored socks were a given.
Fiorenza jeans! Worn with the backwards shaker knit deep-v sweater. That was more 80s.
Does anyone remember the “Lemon Frog” brand from Sears? Pretty much all my childhood clothes were from Sears or a local outlet that was known for irregulars. My mom was great at finding an item with a very small hole or tear and fixing it.
I am trying to remember what jewelry I wore in junior high or high school, but not a lot is sticking out in my mind. I dont think there were as many places that sold nice costume jewelry like there are today.
