"Breaking Bad"

We have threads on this forum for “Parenthood,” “American Idol,” “Project Runway” - why not “Breaking Bad”?

H and I are huge fans (of course, we were both chemistry majors in college, so there was some initial bias when the series started.) I think that this season has been really amazing. I love the way the characters - and my attitudes towards them - have changed as the series has progressed; I used to be a huge fan of Walt but my allegiance has now shifted to Jesse. And I LOVE the chicken man’s character.

Does anyone out there love this show like I do? Sunday night’s episode was great.

I’ve never heard of this show. What’s it about? Which network and when does it air?

Big fans here too. Gus was my favorite characher over the past couple of seasons. Loved the quiet, calm, intellectual kingpin who had Mike do all the dirty work (Mike’s another terrific character).

But I do find Gus a little less interesting this season as he’s become, let’s say, a little more “hands on”…

Recently discovered and absolutely hooked.

The series is on AMC. However there is no jumping in the middle here. The first 33 episodes are on netflix. I streamline it through my kid’s Wii. 47 minute episodes. Well worth the time.

You must, must watch it from the beginning.

Written like a great novel and moving like a freighttrain toward its conclusion.

Basic storyline. High school chem teacher finds out he has lung cancer and stumbles into making meth as a way to pay the bills and secure the financial future of his family. Obviously he is in over his head here.

Highly recommend this show. Guys will love the action and for women the character development will not let you rest. As good as the Godfather series of movies.

And the turtle scene… what the he ll.

My oldest D and her H were the ones who introduced me to Breaking Bad last year. I’ve become a fan. Watched the first two seasons on DVD and then started watching this season. Its a great show. Jesse is my favorite character–he’s grown on me. I also like Marie (Walt’s sister-in-law). She was great in the episode this season where she goes to open houses and starts stealing stuff. I read somewhere that the creator of the series said this would be the last season.

Last few episodes have been extremely well done, with a few notable exceptions (resolution of the Ted storyline, e.g.).

Overall, I think Walt has become a less compelling character this season than in previous ones. Although Jesse’s “don’t care anymore” psychological break earlier in the season wasn’t much of an alternative.

While I agree that Gus is a great character, my favorite has to be Saul.

Next season (fifth) will be the last. We’re near the end of the fourth.

Huh! Did not know this was on AMC! I assumed it was HBO/Showtime/. . . . DH and DS are catching up on the episodes available on Netflix and are loving it. (And the turtle scene was one of the few I’ve seen. Interesting.)

Another character who has grown on me is Hank - Walt’s brother-in-law who just happens to be a DEA agent. At first he seemed to be just a blowhard. Now, he’s STILL a blowhard, but more nuanced.

I just wonder what Walt intended his “end game” to be. Surely, early on, he must have envisioned that this whole cooking-meth-for-my family’s-future strategy had some major flaws. I figure he must have thought he would be dead from cancer before he had to pay the piper.

Actually, between Gus, the threat from the cartel, and the possibility that Hank might discover Walt’s secret - Walt doesn’t have too many good options left.

We are big Breaking Bad fans, though I have to admit I close my eyes sometimes. The acting is terrific, as so is the cinematography (as in the scene in the desert where Walt has the sack over his head). Walt was a sympathetic character to me in the beginning, in a warped way. But he has become less so, even though he’s falling apart. Brian Cranston is just an amazing actor. Scout59, I wonder if Walt didn’t have an endgame. He is delusional (and narcissistic) enough to think he could go on with this forever–which for him is a finite period. I’ve also grown more attached to Hank. On some level I think he really knows what Walt is up to. I would hate to see Hank leave the show, if you get my drift.

I can’t believe I’m admitting this, but when we were in Albuquerque one day this summer, my S looked up BB locations online. We drove by Walt’s house. I felt ridiculous, but at least we didn’t stop and take a photo. When we returned to fly out of ABQ a week later, we needed to find a CVS and ended up across from the car wash.

Another fan here. What a smart, challenging show. It has a unique voice and one of the best casts I’ve ever seen on television. Bryan Cranston is the most amazing actor working in television today. Every time I watch an episode, I marvel that this is the same guy who was the dad in “Malcolm in the Middle.” His performance is fearless and real in every frame.

And I truly love the character of Jesse, and Aaron Paul, who plays him. I was thrilled when he won an Emmy last year - so well deserved. Cranston has won three, and I don’t see how anyone else will deserve one more as long as the show runs. In case anyone wondered (though fans probably know), the show’s hiatus meant that Cranston and Paul were ineligible for the Emmys awarded just a few weeks ago - they will be eligible for next year’s awards. I know acting awards don’t mean much, but if we’re going to have 'em, I want my favorites to win. :)

Being form Albuquerque, I am biased to Breaking Bad, but it is one of the best shows on tv right now. Every character is so well crafted by the writers and the actors. Each one has been a favorite at some point in the series. Right now, hands down its the chicken man and Jesse and probably Mike. The “Salud” episode hilighted each of thier characters in ways that showed the depths of their beings. It still gives me chills. The latest episode where Bernacke slids headfirst into a wall was a Coen brothers black comedy gaffe at its best. Enjoy this series while it lasts. We in ABQ are going to miss them!

Hey, Geezermom - I’d go visit the White residence (and the car wash) if I were in Albuquerque. And if I could visit the chicken shack - bonus! I think you’re right about Walt not really having an endgame. And yet, he seemed so stunned last week when Gus threatened to kill his wife and children. Didn’t he see that coming? (Especially after he witnessed Gus kill that one man in the lab.)

Frazzled, my H and I say the same thing about Brian Cranston all the time - we can’t believe he was once Malcolm’s dad (and he was GOOD as Malcolm’s dad, too.) I will be sorry to see the series end.

I agree with sax, so I recommend not clicking on this link until you’ve watched the first season – having said that, this is my favorite scene ever: [This . . . is not meth](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O47UY80VKfo).

HUGE fan here. HUGE. I really think it’s the best series on TV, with some of the best acting, writing and directing out there. Love Brian Cranston and so glad that Aaron Paul’s fine work was rewarded with an Emmy last season.

For other fans, I’m adding two terrific columns on this series, with intelligent discussions and episode recaps.

[Walter White has to laugh, otherwise he’d cry - Breaking Bad - Salon.com](http://www.salon.com/entertainment/tv/feature/2011/09/26/breaking_bad_recap_season_four_episode_11_crawl_space)

[Breaking Bad, season 4, episode 10: “Salud”](Breaking Bad, season 4, episode 10: "Salud")

^^ I’m looking forward to reading those two columns.

Walt White is a great character, especially when he was making that transition in season one from the mild-mannered Mr. White to the bad-ass Heisenberg. But I think Jesse has always been my favorite character. Some of his scenes are just heartbreaking. Both actors totally deserve their Emmys, but I was especially happy when Aaron Paul was awarded his.

I do think this is the best show currently on tv.

Another big fan here (butI have to give it a second place “Best Drama” spot after Mad Men, though I suppose MM’s not “currently” on TV), and I think the pilot was the single best hour of television I’ve ever seen. I’m proud to say I made two Breaking Bad “converts” out of S and H. In fact, H just got intrigued a few weeks ago when he saw some of the current season, and I convinced him that he had to see the series from the beginning to truly appreciate it. He started watching it on Netflix and has zoomed through 14 episodes in a week! Bryan Cranston and Aron Paul both deserve the Emmy’s they’ve won, but I also have a particular soft spot for Paul’s portrayal of Jesse. Can’t wait til Sunday!

Fav in our house as well, both with us old folks and our young adult son.
Not too many shows in this category!

My favorite recent scene (SPOILER ALERT!!!) was the poisoned liquor Gus brought as a toast for his new ‘business associates’. I am so proud that I uncharacteristically called that plot point way ahead…and I STILL was blown away by the actual scene.
I just couldn’t exactly figure out HOW he was going to make it out alive.

GREAT characters, UNBELIEVABLE writing.

What’s Alan Watching blog is a BB fan’s delight.
Dissecting episodes and examining details of the show.
I never watch the promo for next week’s BB episode because the 6 days and 23 hours tease is unbearable.
I still miss the Cousins, their single mindedness of completing their job, the curve of their boot tips.
Hey, who doesn’t enjoy Walt, Jr. eating yet another bowl of cereal?
The brawl between Mr. White and Jessie is indicative of the fight for next year’s Best Actor Emmy-they both deserve to win.
The writers of BB are to be applauded for supplying us “must see TV” every Sunday night.

Okay - bringing this thread back to talk about the season finale, which I just watched this past weekend.

Any comments? Criticisms? I am going to miss Gus, but I have to say I loved that little twist at the very end!
