We need to remember our kids aren’t perfect. Takes two in a relationship. And being with the quiet, reserved low key kid can grow old after a while. Sorry but it can.

So while we see our kids as amazing, they often have irksome personality traits.

If my husband was reserved, we never would have lasted.

DS is like his father in that manner so it’s not so irksome as it is familiar for me. I’m the higher strung one; the old union of “opposites attract”.

Odd thing with the ex gf? She too is quiet and reserved (or at least was around us) so how they lasted as long as they did is a mystery unto itself!

I can’t imagine being with the same person I dated my freshman year in high school at this point in time. Six years together at that age is really very unusual. I often think that couples stay together just because it is what they know and what they have become comfortable with. You change so much during adolescence and even in the early 20’s and it is rare that two people grow together.

I’m still trying to deal with my own breakup from a few weeks ago. I’ll be 48 in a few weeks and I’m still dealing with breakups!

Maybe it’s my husband and my own “defy the odds” relationship that has me irrationally hanging onto my son’s hs school relationship. We were 23 and 19 when pregnancy showed up. We didn’t have a p to p in, a window to throw it out nor a car that would get us across state without breaking down and only hs educations…

Two kids from highly dysfunctional families, we dug in our heels and karma took over.

Four kids later, three college educated and doing well and ds in his second year, we hit 34 years of marriage next month. And he is my best friend, soulmate, for better and worse (had both numerous times) and a dad and grandpa extraordinaire…

I know adversity when it comes to relationships.

But I also know, sometimes, the least likely to win comes from behind and does (:

Long distance is hard but only time will tell the end of this story. One of my best friends had the same situation–married 30 plus years now to him. You just don’t know.
