Brockman Foundation Scholarship - HS Class of 2020

@TXRunningMom, no problem, thanks for your insights.
@USAFwife2000 and @Olecollegetry , thanks for the information, and congratulations on the early acceptance for yours sons! As might be expected, I’m a bit anxious and curious because my son interviewed and has not been offered an early acceptance. Patience is not one of my virtues!

@Mojo1995 No negativity. It’s a great STEM scholarship and one I recommend to my clients who are interested in STEM. As I indicated initially, I helped a current scholar win one during the first year. But the hyperbole that is so rampant on CC needed to be called out.

My son is also a National Merit Semifinalist. He has been contacted by the Brockman Foundation, but not Brown.

@hornet2020 , have you been contacted by Brockman for an interview or for early acceptance?

Yes! My son had the honor of being invited to interview for the Brockman last week. We are anxiously awaiting news. Fingers crossed he makes it to the next round!

@USAFwife2000 @Olecollegetry Congratulations to your kids! Does an early acceptance mean they wouldn’t attend the Finalist’s Weekend, or would they attend and simply not have to go through further interviews, etc.?

Does anyone know when the Finalist’s Weekend is?

@Ksrent, I haven’t seen any definitive date for Finalists Weekend, except that it’s sometime in March. When did/do you or your child interview?

@hurricane314 , Thank you! It was unexpected and an honor for him to get an interview much less early acceptance. Finalists Weekend will be Mar. 26-28. I am unsure if BSP will invite him to attend.

@AggieDadHopeful, Heading to Houston this weekend for interview. Know there is no guarantee of making it to the next round, but just curious as making other travel plans.

@Olecollegetry @USAFwife2000 , is the response deadline for the early acceptance invitation at noon tomorrow, or end of the day? How is the decision making process going?!?

My son received an early acceptance offer to the Brockman Scholars Program this year (2020), he has accepted the offer, and has received the paperwork that must be signed and returned to become a Brockman Scholar. Here are some answers to questions posed earlier on this forum:

@TXRunningMom brought up the notion of paying back the Brockman Scholarship due to falling below the 3.5 GPA requirement. This appears to be false. The only penalty I saw with regard to the scholarship for things such as low grades and honor code violations was the loss of the scholarship. It appears from my reading of the contracts (there are four separate short documents to sign) comprising the Brockman Scholars Program (BSP) that a scholar’s failure to achieve this level of academic performance (3.5 GPA) during a semester will subject a scholar’s status to review by the Foundation and may jeopardize the continued provision of the scholarship for the ensuing semester.

Having said that, it does appear that BSP could choose to be reimbursed by the scholar if he/she does not complete the MS in Business (fifth year) portion of the Scholars Program. One of the contracts makes it very clear that Brockman Scholars are agreeing to complete the MS in Business component as a condition of accepting the scholarship. SO, if your intent is to get a four year STEM degree and then drop out of the BSP program without completing your MS in Business, there may be some consequences should the Brockman Foundation decide to hold you to the contract.

@Olecollegetry asked if the early acceptance offer people (such as my son) will be invited to Finalists Weekend on March 26-28th. Yes! My son’s email correspondence indicated that BSP is still looking forward to hosting him at Finalists Weekend this March. In fact, the contract lists several events requiring Brockman Scholar attendance, including:

 Final Selection Weekend Meet & Greet – March 2021

Given that my son is required to attend NEXT year’s Finalist Weekend (as shown above), I’m guessing that all current Brockman Scholars will make an appearance at Finalist Weekend in March of this year (2020).

Hope this information helps…

DISCLOSURE: I am not an attorney and you should probably take what I’ve written here with a grain of salt.

@USAFwife2000 and @Olecollegetry , would you be willing to update us on the decision you and your sons made on the early acceptance invitation of the Brockman scholarship?

@AggieDadHopeful Yes, my son did accept the early offer. @AggieNews described the contract perfectly. It does appear he will be attending Finalists Weekend in March, but info on that is still pending.

@AggieDadHopeful My son also accepted the offer! He is beyond grateful with the generosity of the Brockman Foundation and the opportunity. Good luck to everyone!

Son’s interview date was moved up several weeks via an email saying they are making changes in the selection process . For those who have gotten early offers, was the interview date moved up?

@Bmcg40, from when to when did they change your son’s interview date?

We are headed down to Houston in the morning for my son’s interview. Will anyone else be there tomorrow afternoon? Would love to meet you if you are!

Interview complete! My child said that they were very gracious and made the process streamlined and comfortable. Each hour seemed to have a group of 4 who waited together. Each went into a different room to interview.

Good luck to everyone! I’ll update if we hear anything.

@Bmcg40, I haven’t heard of any other interviews being moved up. When was your son’s original interview date, and to when was it moved up?
