Bruno Mars!

My daughter’s tastes are similar. Loves Ingrid Michaelson. (I like her too.)

Oh, but that’s even more hipster, to be so above it all that one could like (insert unknown white girl with ukulele) AND Beyoncé. It’s so ironic there isn’t a trace of irony; or is it the other way around? Well played, JHS-Daughter!

JHS - your daughter doesn’t have a part in an HBO series, does she? Just asking.

Pizzagirl – That’s pretty much it exactly. I will say, though, that she has always had broader tastes than her hippest friends, and she has never disliked something simply because it was too popular with the general public (which is not the case with her hippest friends).

As for the HBO series (which occasionally films exteriors on her block), she says “Of course it’s trying to represent my life, but it doesn’t really represent my life. I do know some people whose lives it pretty much represents, though.”

I thought this thread was about Bruno Mars, not about how hip our daughters are… I thought the halftime show was fun. I liked the pairing with RHCP.

I guess I thought I was hip because Bruno Mars didn’t elicit a “huh, who’s that?” from me. Except I’m about 30 years too old to ever be hip. Or hipster. Ha ha.

JHS, the equivalent-of-Greenpoint hipsters I know out here – a mix of those in Chicago and Milwaukee, which if you want to go all Laverne-and-Shirley, has a retro-hipster scene – listen to female bands like The Muffs and The Pipettes, for what that’s worth.

My daughter is so hip she’s starting to like bluegrass.

I smell a hipster match-off between JHS-D and Hunt-D.

They could compare scarves.

Why would anyone claim to be a hipster?
Thats like being proud to be a valley girl.
Epicenter of hipsterdom has to be the Doe Bay music festival.

LOL! actually agree with this. My D is very anti ukulele girls .S thinks some are cute, but boring.

No one claims to be a hipster, emeraldkity. That’s the whole point - they avoid being labeled, and rebel at the thought of conformity to mainstream ways (which, I suppose, would include watching a decidedly-mainstream Bruno Mars at the Super Bowl?). Or they appropriate those mainstream ways, but do so with a wink and a nice delicious heap of irony.

Well nobody wants to be labeled when it comes with a heavy dose of snark. Why are people offended or irritated when others do not share their taste in music?

Why do people become offended or irritated when lots of people start to share their taste in music?

You have repeated my question. Cross posted? Niqui, I wonder, since you frequently throw out the hipster label when someone does share your taste. Why is that? I am genuinely curious.

Well that’s just not true lol.

musicmusica, the questions are different.

I don’t throw out the hipster label when some share my taste in music…?

Perhaps you should clarify as to how these two questions are different. I am wondering why you throw out the hipster label when you disagree with others in musical preferences. Do you want to clarify?
So I misunderstood “#hipsterism”

You are not the only one throwing around labels. It just seems odd to me that posters need to use that label. Their taste, especially in the mainstream , is valid…while the taste of others, is labeled as a by product of hipsterism.

Why are people offended or irritated when others do not share their taste in music?
This questions asks why someone is offended or irritated when someone does not share their taste in music.

Why do people become offended or irritated when lots of people start to share their taste in music?
This question asks why someone is offended or irritated when people START to share their taste in music. The answer to this would be: Because they’re a hipster. Stereotypically, hipsters like things that are not mainstream. When people start to like their taste in music, they find someone else that barely anyone knows about.

EDIT: #Hipsterism is the movement towards or state of liking things that “unliked”, “underground”, “not mainstream”, and the like.

ok…got it. You just label them as hipsters when they enjoy what you consider non mainstream music.
sigh.
