*** BS/MD Interview Notification for Class of 2014***

Can you please advise me on what is the best option for me to take? After getting rejected to several combined medical programs, these are the programs/colleges that I have gotten acceptance into.

BS/MD: University of Houston 7 year BS/MD, Texas A & M PPC, Texas Tech UMSI

Undergrad Colleges: Cornell, Dartmouth, Rice, WashU, Johns Hopkins (BME), Vanderbilt, Case Western, UT Austin Honors Program

@IMGDAD @texaspg Is it a wiser choice to leave the bs/md programs and go for any of the undergrad colleges above, or should I just stick with one of the bs/md programs? Also, out of the bs/md I have, in your opinion, which is the best one?

@der5678, if you are sure you want to be a physician, go for the BS/MD programs rather than UG programs. Obviously if you are not sure and would like to defer your decision about medicine, then go to a good UG program. You appear to have many choices of UG program, either in-state or, more exciting and interesting, out of state, provided money is not the issue.

As far as the three Texas BS/MD program is concern, I would subjectively rank them in this order: UHouston>UMSI>A&M PPC. UHouston is a very good medical school and being in Houston, you will have more chance to meet and interact with students from other medical schools in Houston. Also, you may have better chance of meeting professors from the other medical schools since, theoretically, you could do your research in another medical school. However, the GPA requirement of 3.8 is very high, especially when you still need MCAT. Tech is good but Lubbock is rather isolated and Tech is the only game in town. So, the advantages I mentioned above that you would get going to UHouston would not be available. The PPC program is for primary care. There is nothing wrong with primary care and I think you are really not committed to a career in primary care by going to the program (check it out that your degree does not say this is a Primary care program). If you are, I would stay away from the program and avoid making sure a lifelong career commitment at this early stage of your life. Having said all that, I must disclose that my son is on the waitlist for UMSI and so there might be conflict of interest in my comments.

Congratulations. That is an impressive list of schools.

What is your financial position? Are you getting any money from any of the listed schools?

For combined, I would go in the same order listed. The schools tied Houston are both tied into Houston hospitals with a great set of rotations available. So UTH or UTMB are very good choices for a medical school and even if you attend any of the undergrad schools listed it is quite possible you will end up at UTH because they like to admit residents who attended top notch OOS schools.

However, if there is any doubt about not doing medicine, the undergrad schools listed seem really good.

@IMGDAD Thank you for the advice. I appreciate it. Good luck to your son. I am sure he will be successful wherever he goes.

ALL: I am open to anyone’s advice regarding my situation. I greatly appreciate any help and knowledge you can provide to me. Thank you!!

@texaspg Thank you for your help. I appreciate it.

I will also appreciate any advice that anybody else provides regarding my situation. Thank you so much :)

My D wants to go to UMSI because she’s always wanted to go to texas tech as we have a family legacy there. As for opportunities, I have to say that UTH has the most since it’s located near the largest med center in the world. Also, those are some very prestigious undergrad schools. With those acceptances I’m sure you’ll succeed wherever you choose to go.

@IMGDAD - I am a bit surprised why they would discuss no one being taken off the list for 8 years. Isn’t the program ony couple of years old while early assurance program has what has been around for a long time (you get in during sophomore year?).

@houstonrep Thank you for your help.

@texaspg, the issue was NOT in the general discussion at the interview. I asked when we were all waiting for the students to come back from their interview and when the admission officer was walking around making small talk to other candidates and to parents. Also, UMSI has been around for many years, apparently. I think we were talk that it has been around for more than 10 years and certainly one of the students on the student panel went into 8 years ago since he is in his last year of medical school. There were also UMSI scholars on the panel who are in the third and second year of medical school.

Congrats to everyone for all the recent acceptances! I’ve had an insane work project that’s just about wrapped up, hence the break (plus not much to report anyway). And to the folks who suffered disappointment, again my sympathy and encouragement - I have every confidence you will get where you want to go by one path or another.

RPI/AMC emails started today. Daughter got in! So that’s where she’s going. Thanks again to everyone for their advice and support on this journey, you are all truly a blessing to me.

@slcmom, congrats to you and your daughter. Best wishes to her in her RPI/AMC journey.

I also got my acceptance email.

@starlight27, you have been on a winning streak.

Congratulations to all who got accepted.

@SLCMom‌
Congratulations. Good luck to your daughter!

@med007‌
Congrats and good luck!

@anothernjdad‌
Thank you!

@‌med007
Thank you! And have you decided where you’ll be going? I remember you have multiple options…

Congratulations on having a clear choice! It will be a beautiful April when you have no college selections to be reviewed!

@SLCMom, congrats to your daughter.

@slcmom, I’m still waiting to here from upitt- gap program. Still thinking about rice -Baylor interview; the removal of the guarantee from the program and changing MCAT is having me reconsider to go or not. For me the money aspect is going to play a big part in my decision making process.

@Late2Party, congratulations on your D! My son did not get in, but he is happy with Drexel program.
I would guess 41 accepted into NJMS programs (including all undergraduate?), because when we were at Rutgers, I asked Ms Pinto about the numbers, she said they picked 25 and sent over to NJMS for review. The program with Rutgers/NJMS is small, last year there were 2 students enrolled, the year before only 1 student in the program.

@SLCMom, I have been thinking abut you and your D, big congratulations!

All results are in for my S, here is a little summary:
He applied about 10 programs. Five I thought he has a chance : BU, PSU/Jefferson, Drexel/Drexel, Lehigh/Drexel, Rutgers/NJMS, three of the five gave him interview. No interview in BU, the undergraduate REJECTED him, the funny thing is after he submitted his application, they encouraged him to apply for scholarship. No interview in Lehigh/Drexel, Lehigh undergraduate waitlisted him. Student in the same school who get Ds get in Lehigh. LOL. The other five were long shot, and he did not get interview.

As dust settle and we go back to our normal life, I want to thank everyone here. Applying college in general, BS/MD program is a tough process, this is my first time going through. I am thankful I found this amazing group, thanks for all the supports and wisdom. With your company, going through the ups and downs is so much easier.

I am so impressed with the students in this forum, Starlight, MedicalBoy, Welscool, Jerseygirl… and others I can not remember IDs (blame the old age), you are all so well intelligent, driven, thoughtful and kind, all in all very well-rounded group of students, you will be successful no matter what school you choose in the end and what specialty you get into. The schools you decide to attend are lucky to have you. Best of luck to you all.

To the parents, Midhelp, IMGdad, SLCMom… your dedication to your children inspired me, and your words of wisdom will stay with me.

@Midhelp, I think you mentioned once you help kids for college application? Is there any way I can get in touch with you in the future? I my seek for you help when my D apply for college in 2017.

@texaspg‌
Thank you! Yes, we are very fortunate - RPI/AMC is her top choice (because she loves research) of the 3 programs she interviewed for, and among the top few choices of all the programs she considered, so it works out.

@IMGDAD‌
Thank you! Congrats to your son too!
