*** BS/MD Interview Notification for Class of 2014***

@med007
Congrats! Hard choices now…but a good problem to have.

Wow congrats to those who have gotten several acceptances!

Just curious - anyone feel bad about turning down a school for another like maybe you had made a personal connection with an interviewer and that’s the school you are turning down?

Guaranteed ones:
REMS
UPITT:GAP
RPI/AMC

Non Guaranteed ones:
DREXEL/DREXEL
SLU Med Honors

Decided to drop going to RICE/BAYLOR interview; because of the removal of guarantee (was my top choice till last year) .

Need help in deciding between REMS and the GAP programs. Forgetting the financial aspect (it is a big one; will factor it in later) – need inputs based on the merits of their undergrad program and med school programs.

PITT GAP GPA requirement is 3.75//REMS it is staggered: 3.4 (freshman yr); cumulative 3.5 (by end of sophomore yr) and cumulative 3.6 for junior & senior years

Got into UPitt GAP as well!!!

med007…did Rice/Bay actually REMOVE guarantee? As you probably know, PITT is one of the toughest and highly rated med schools in all USA…I loved Pitt…amazing place, all within 10 square blocks. REMS also great program. Methinxxxx life in Pittsburgh will be considerably more worldly and you also have the amazing Carnegie-Mellon support. Rochester…smaller town for an 8 year stint but awesome program…LIFESTYLE choice

@dumich, thanks for your inputs.

This what I found in the rice/Baylor FAQ page:

Will the MCAT be required of Rice/Baylor Scholars?
Yes, the MCAT will be required of Rice/Baylor Scholars who matriculate to Rice beginning the fall 2014.

@med007‌
Not sure what you meant by “guaranteed” - sounds like you are going by whether MCAT is needed?

While I understand comparing UPitt and Rochester, if finance is making the decision, maybe it is better to recognize that they are both great programs for UG and for med school, and you will do well in either, so you don’t have to regret whatever decision is made based on finance.

Best of luck - and also congrats to all the latest acceptances, folks!

@slcmom, thanks for your inputs.

I agree with you, I should have said “No MCAT required” instead of “Guaranteed” as all programs have GPA requirements.

Med007 what day did you interview?

@dk9618, I have sent a pm to you.

Anyone waiting for UCSD Med Scholars decisions?

-

Hey, I’m still choosing between a couple BSMD programs. Would anybody be willing to PM me access to the US News Medical School Compass? I would really appreciate it. I bought the undergraduate subscription because I didn’t really expect to get into any BSMD programs, but I would really like to see the residency info about these prgorams. Thanks in advance!

@NUHPME What programs ave you been accepted to?

@doctorm, i’m another one of those people choosing between northwestern HPME and brown PLME. I also got into SLU med scholars, but will not be attending because I won’t get the guarantee until sophomore year.

@NUHPME‌ congrats on getting into both those programs! honestly, i would choose nu hpme over brown plme considering that Feinberg is a really impressive medical school, but you can’t really choose wrongly Just find the one you think you might fit in better at. Good luck!

^ditto

mdills17…I believe that the support system at PLME has a spirit of camaraderie that is ABSENT at HPME. My two visits to NPME(NWU) were full of egocentric disposition and ho-hum…just one man’s(17 year old) opinion! I want quality of exchange within the program rather than who can get their BS/MD/PhD faster with more publications !

^ one of my friends is actually in the HPME, and he says that the members are actually a very close-knit community, so I wouldn’t say that the support system isn’t there, but again it all depends on your preferences, but I’d say the opportunities near Chicago might be a bit greater than near Providence. Just my opinion tho.

I got to agree with dumich, I live in Chicago and got the same feeling whenever I visited NU. I have a relative and several aquaintances who are/were in HPME and they also complained about the “clash of egos” in the program. They were quite disappointed considering these students were going to be doctors, who must be humble and down-to-earth. In Chicago, NU has sort of got a bad rep for having a lot of snobbish “white, rich kids.” Just my two cents cuz I am unsure whether I want to do HPME or Princeton. I dont know if I want to sacrifice a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to quality education in the name of acceleration to medical school.
