If you are looking for the audition dates for BU, I believe they are on the website and you can schedule an audition.

SOT website - prospective students - undergraduate admissions: performance - Step 2: schedule an audition, it say 2012 artistic review dates. Click on that and it gives you the list from last year (for example, Nov 18 is listed as the audition date for ED). However, click on that Nov 18 date, and it brings you a list of THIS YEAR’S dates, with Nov 16 highlighted as the ED audition date.

Really weird, but you may want to call to confirm those dates are legit, and then you can grab a slot. I know lots of folks need to set up travel dates, so I thought I’d mention it. I could be wrong, but I think their website is twisted . . .

Confirmation from the theater office at BU this morning. The early audition date is Friday, November 16, 2012. Starts at 9 AM, and likely to last 3-4 hours. It is likely my paranoia speaking, but feel free to double check the date one more time!

I think so, for most schools anyway. This particular date at BU is for those students doing Early decision, but maybe you can schedule an audition then too if you get a reg. app. in before then.

Depends on the school–BU is one that requires you to apply first. Pretty sure CMU does also. Others may just ask you to apply before the audition occurs, so you have to scrutinize the websites. Otterbein requires you to pass the prescreen before applying, for example. Sorting all of this out is a job for Spreadsheet Parent! How Marbleheader figured out that BU scheduling oddity is a miracle, though…I am very impressed!

Unless things have changed, NYU lets you schedule an audition before you apply. They have lots of audition dates, including early auditions.

You have to be on top of things and try to apply for your NYU audition date the minute reservations open up, because the most desirable dates vanish very fast.

Well, this doesn’t bode well for the school that I am willing to send my son to for four years - but if you remember correctly, all the info that the kids got for BUSTI had a mess of wrong dates on it. The schedule had the start date and end date from 2011! So, going with the premise that whoever does all this has a “casual” approach I just figured that they would actually have the date already and kicked around until I found it!

And again - someone asked on the MT forum if they were doing too much for their student as far as helping with the application process, but no kid would have policed something like this and stumbled on the info.

Oh . . . BU admissions doesn’t read these forums, do they?!?!? Ha ha!

NYU lets you audition before the application because they charge independently for their audition. I think it was $85 last year. About 4 out of the 10 we applied to had separate fees associated with the audition. The other colleges had the fee included in the application.

I think requiring the application to the school before securing an audition time is to weed out those who are not serious drama students. There are many out there that wake up one morning and decide they want to be a movie star. Having to go through a lengthy application process or dole out money for the audition thins the serious from the non-serious.

Every single auditioned BFA program my son applied to had an audition fee. It adds up!

NYU probably lets students schedule auditions before having applied mostly because of the incredible number of auditions they do.

Marbleheader, that’s a shame about the wrong dates on the BUSTI info. Nevertheless, my son is a senior this year at BU, and I can tell you that the school is generally quite efficient, administratively.

Great that you have a senior at BU! We are hoping to go to a few shows - maybe we will see your son perform. And I’m sure if S gets in ED he will want to go to ALL the shows - he will be over the moon!

As I recall, shacherry, we were interested in a date that was a school holiday for most public schools, and it was full because we were not prompt enough.

The concern about dates filling up would probably mostly apply to folks like us who can get to NYC auditions pretty easily and wouldn’t need to audition during Unifieds. I’m pretty sure they have huge numbers of slots during Unifieds. I don’t know much about the fall dates.

Marbleheader, let me know when your BU visit will be and I will find out from my son what shows he’d most recommend.

Oh, wait…you are in the Boston area. So, anytime you want a recommendation of a BU production, just ask, okay? I think most of the first quarter shows go up in mid October.

Some of the seniors, including my son, are not in casting first quarter because of internships or other obligations but will be in second and third quarter shows.

Marbleheader, OddDad, et al., we will be thinking of you and your kids on the ED audition date. I for one am jealous that you’re going for it, but we think my S’s academic application will have better chances if he waits till after his first-trimester grades. If there’s any chance of getting up there for a production this fall, we’ll do it, though. Weekends already look packed through early December…and then the real fun starts in January!
By the way, MH, I had looked at those dates on the website dozens of times and had never thought to CLICK on them. All that Dunkin Donuts caffeine must be working for you! :D

I am REALLY surprised and happy to hear that BU has an ED theater app. I didn’t think any BFA programs had this…WOW!! I will be pulling for your DS Marbleheader!!!
