BU premed student charged with death of woman who advertised in Craigslist

VeryHappy…yes, everything released so far seems to point to his guilt. I was just saying for the record that he’ll have his day in court and his guilt has to be proven but it is not looking good for this guy.

I was at BU on Wednesday. I had to walk three miles to get there because there was a Red Sox game that evening. Everything looked normal to me. I don’t see how Markoff would be a danger to other students there given his MO.

Yes, innocent until proven guilty but it looks like the police were very careful in collecting evidence here. I was one of the bloggers with KC Johnson in the Duke Lacrosse case so I’m aware of prejudging and how the media can blow things out of proportion. But that does not appear to be the case here. They gathered evidence carefully and waited before they arrested him. Then they did further evidence gathering supporting their case.

It says in The New York Times today that they found his fingerprint at the hotel in Warwick, RI where the last woman was tied up.

Yup, even though he is technically “innocent until proven guilty” I think the handwriting on the eventual verdict is on the wall. There will eventually be a book, a movie, etc. Lucky for Megan this broke before the wedding. I am sure she does not feel lucky now, but compared to having it break years hence, she was saved lots of additional trouble.

It’s really scary though how little we can sometimes *really *know a person.

One thing I did think was odd was that the mother of one of the bridesmaids (one of the rare people in the circle who talked to the press) said that neither she nor her daughter had met the groom. My own D has been dating a guy for about a year now and he has spent time with her good friends, both from her local high school and from her college, and vice versa. IMO anyone close enough to the bride to be a bridesmaid would have been expected to have met the intended groom by now. They are in different states but not* that* far away (NJ – Boston). Who knows, but that did strike me as odd. (Of course, I am *looking for odd *as it is **scary **that an intelligent young woman can be so deceived.)

Well, if the bridesmaid is a friend from HS and the groom is from college, it’s not that unusual.

Of course, everything else about this is weird . . .

As a fan of true-life crime shows and CSI-type shows, I’m surprised this guy left so much evidence lying around in virtually plain sight.

^ Friend from high school who is still a **big enough part **of this young woman’s life to be in her **bridal party **though. That to me suggests a **very close **friend, not just any high school friend. Plus Megan and Philip have been a couple for at least three years. I still maintain that is odd.

Edited to add:
They met when he was a sophomore at SUNY Albany (and she was a senior) and he is now in his second year of med school.

Three years? Hmmmm. I didn’t know that. Then I agree with you.

I find it almost so odd that perhaps he wanted to get caught.
Come on if it is true the gun hidden in a Grays Anatomy textbook? How medstudent/killer CSI can you get.

yes, the Gray’s Anatomy hiding place is so symbolic…

med student on the outside, killer on the inside…he himself was hiding in plain sight. speaks to our stereotypes…we don’t expect someone who likes and lives as he did to be dangerous.

I know that it was difficult for me to come to terms with the fact that you can never really know another person. I so wanted to believe that I could. While having a far less intimate connection with the people in my life who shattered that illusion, it was still a painful lesson to learn and difficult to accept.

“and the victims’ underwear (on which I assume they’re doing DNA tests)”

While DNA tests take a while, I’m wondering whether they’re IDing the murder victim’s underwear by bloodstains. The other victim’s underwear could match the victim’s description of it.

Julissa Brisman, the victim of the alleged Craigslist killer, would have turned 26 today and in her first public statement on the horrific murder, the brazen-haired beauty’s mother says the family has been “devastated.”

The parents of accused Craigslist killer Philip Markoff ran a gauntlet of 20 reporters and photographers staking out the Nashua Street Jail this afternoon to visit their son for the first time since his arrest.

The bridesmaid not meeting the groom is not THAT odd to me. My husband and I were in college in Boston when we dated and got engaged. My wedding was near Philadelphia where I grew up and my maid of honor was from my home town and my fiancee was only in my home town once before the wedding (to meet my parents) but we otherwise were together in Boston. One bridesmaid was neither from my hometown or my college but went to another college and her home was in another state and so they did not meet until the wedding either. (I had just one maid of honor and two bridesmaids, but one bridesmaid was my college roomie and so she had met my groom).

I wonder how Markoff had TIME as a med student to do all these activities! My kid is in a rigorous professional graduate degree program and has no free time at all. Markoff got around…had time to make these contacts…meet up with these women…rob or kill them…take time to hide some evidence (was not too good with that)…go away for the weekend with his honey to Foxwoods (was to be this weekend before he got caught and had his plans interrupted), or his recent gambling trips to Foxwood. I thought med school was pretty grueling and busy!

and kind of on that same note…Wouldn’t the fiance’ have had an inkling that Phillip could have a gambling problem? How many college students visit casinos several times each week?

I don’t find the fact that one of the bridesmaids hadn’t met the groom odd either. This is a hometown friend. According to Irish Central, which is following the story because McAllister is Irish-American, the two have been friends since the age of four.

Remember that McAllister didn’t meet Markoff until her senior year in college. Because of this fact, it really doesn’t strike me as surprising that a hometown friend hasn’t met him. Moreover, while I suspect she may have been on a leave of absence, it’s come out that McAllister was enrolled in an “off shore” med school located on St. Kitt’s. So, after college graduation, she probably left for St. Kitt’s and wasn’t around NJ much herself. So, it isn’t all that surprising to me that a hometown friend never met him. Among other things, we don’t know whether the bridesmaid still lives in New Jersey herself. If she doesn’t, there would be fewer chances to meet her friend’s boyfriend.

I don’t see how McAllister could be living with Markoff in Quincy and going to med school on St. Kitt’s. However, one source said that they just moved in together last July. So, maybe McAllister took a year off from med school to plan the wedding and maybe even study hard for round one of the med boards in the hope of being able to transfer to a US med school closer to Markoff. Who knows? Or maybe she’s only been living in Quincy during vacations from med school–which would explain why she wouldn’t have any suspicions --even if Markoff is guilty he might have committed the crimes while she was on St. Kitt’s. Who knows?

As for the gambling…the media has quoted some Foxwood employee who said he asked for a line of credit last November, but didn’t spend much time at all in the casino until March and April. She obviously knew he gambled because a trip to Mohegan Sun was one of the honeymoon destinations listed on the wedding website in a where should we honeymoon poll. But if she wasn’t around that much, she may not have realized how out of control it was.

I am really worried about the media frenzy though–it’s going to be hard to find impartial jurors.

Do we really know he has a gambling problem, or does he just enjoy gambling as a passtime?? Many people do, and don’t have a “problem.”

It’s a problem if you have to steal money to support it.

Why is this story getting more ink on CC than the Melissa Huckaby thing?

Hummm…

The Huckaby story had nothing to do with college students. People here can relate much more to this story.
