Budget Colleges for "full pay" student

I was admitted to UIUC as a transfer student, but the 31k COA basically put this school out of reach. My parents are only able to afford about 6k of tuiton, even though we have an efc of over 35k. There are hardly any universities within driving distance, so staying at home isn’t an option.
What are some good, cheap schools for someone in this situation? I don’t care what region the school is in. I just need one that is affordable

Major?

South Dakota State ($16k) and South Dakota Mines ($21k) may be decent low cost choices if your major is engineering, but they are still somewhat of a stretch financially unless you get merit scholarships (not too likely for out-of-state transfer students).

Truman State and University of Minnesota - Morris are typical low list price schools for liberal arts ($21k to $25k), but no idea what kind of merit scholarships they offer for out-of-state transfer students.

If you are LDS, BYU is inexpensive (it is still not too expensive for non-LDS, but many non-LDS might not want the heavy religious environment).

Already went to Truman state for a semester, didn’t care for it.
Majoring in economics

Any other suggestions anyone?

Try looking on [CollegeData: College Search, Financial Aid, College Application, College Scholarship, Student Loan, FAFSA Info, Common Application](http://www.collegedata.com) for low cost of attendance schools.

Take a look at West Virginia University, I believe they offer some sort of scholarships for transfer students.
I always thought their COA was reasonable For OOS students, compared to many other publics.

What do you mean by “hardly any universities within driving distance”? Are there any at all? Or are they unaffordable or unlikabke? Is there a community college in commuting distance that could get you through the first two years?

What was wrong with Truman State? The other inexpensive options may have those same issues.

Your best bet may be either to go back to Truman State (if you can still get any aid you may need), or else look for a community college within commuting distance.

Here are a few residential colleges where the full OOS COA is $15K or less:
Alaska Bible College
Allegheny Wesleyan College (OH)
Brigham Young - Hawaii
Concordia College Selma (AL)
Peru State College (NE)
Rust College (MS)
Southwestern Christian College (TX)

For a full OOS COA of $20K or less, you have a few more options, such as Oklahoma Panhandle State University. Check the college matcher cited above. I doubt you’re going to find very good financial aid this late in the year for a transfer student with a $35K EFC.

With that limited budget, you really can only stay instate or maybe try U New Mexico which does offer good merit to OOS transfers.

What state schools are within driving distance?

What is your home state? Missouri???

Are you transferring as a junior? soph? what? If you’re not transferring as a junior, then continue at a CC and have your parents set aside their contribution for future years.

Where are you going to school now??

Your $6k budget makes nearly any OOS school unaffordable, because your parents’ money would go towards instate tuition (if your state has low cost tuition), and a student loan and summer earnings would go towards room and board. you’d have to work part time during the school year to cover day to day expenses.

??? What the heck??? Why would you deposit at UIUC when you know you don’t have the money? And, why did you even apply there when you knew that your parents wouldn’t pay? What is going on here?

Ok…

So you went to Truman State for one semester, and now you’re a frosh at a CC.

You need to stay at the CC for one more year, have your parents set aside that $6k, and you need to work as much as you can this summer and set that money aside.

there isn’t a tuition fairy out there. I can’t figure out why you thought you could attend UIUC with a high EFC, you’re OOS, and your parents will only pay $6k. Where did you think the money would come from?

*Former TSU student here (only for one semester)
campus is pretty nice and compact (except for barnett hall)
Most people stay over the weekend.
My only gripe was the huge amount of stl and kc kids.
seems like 90% of the school was from one of those cities.
Unfortunately, Kirksville is not a very nice town at all, and there are no big cities within an hr or so of the town (columbia being closest)

For transferring Missouri residents, it appears only the Amigo Scholarship is available. Note the eligibility criteria. It’s renewable for 4 consecutive semesters. This may be a good option after 2 years of community college.

SUNY’s anyone ?

Your username is uofiapplicant and you can’t attend University of Illinois ? Why is the efc 35k and afc only 6k ? The only option is to work in the summer.

I know that people like to say that SUNYs are cheap for OOS, but they’re NOT CHEAP for those who don’t have the money to pay. It costs about $30k per year to attend a SUNY as an OOS student.

This student says his parents will only pay $6k…so where is he supposed to get the other $20k+ ???

I don’t understand why people recommend SUNYs to OOS student who don’t have the money to attend those “cheap” schools.

Why is the efc 35k and afc only 6k ?

The student may not know all the particulars of the family situation. As someone who is totally speculating, it suggests to me that the family does not have college savings, may have high committed payments (mortgage, etc), and/or has assets (like rentals) that give a high EFC, but can’t be sold to pay for college. Likely, the family has determined that out of current income, they can scrape together $500 a month to put towards college.

The fact is, it is what it is. It’s irrelevant that the family has a high EFC. IF they can’t pay it, they can’t pay it.

Actually, all my questions was directed to the OP. Sorry for not clarifying. It costs 27k to 29k per year to attend a SUNY like Buffalo (16k+11k). It is definitely cheaper than normal state universities which cost 40k. It is also much better than the college you recommended University of New Mexico lol.

I know that your Q’s were directed to the OP. I was just offering an explanation as to why the EFC may not be affordable.

Yes, SUNYs do cost less for an OOS student then some other OOS publics. No one is disagreeing with that. My point was that even if OOS SUNY is “cheap” ($29k per year), that is NOT cheap for the person whose parents are only going to pay $6k.

“Cheap” is relative. The Mercedes dealer may offer a brand new car for $25k. Oh, so cheap!! What a deal. But, for the person who only has $10k to spend, $25k isn’t cheap. This isn’t a perfect analogy but should provide the point. Nothing is “cheap” if you don’t have the money.

SUNYs may be better than UNew Mexico, but UNM offers transfer scholarshps. IF this student were given a generous one, then with the parents’ money and a student loan, the school might be affordable…unlike the “cheap” SUNYs.

SUNY Buffalo

Tuition and fees …$18,609
Room and board …$11,310

Books and supplies …$1000

Basic costs…about $31k…not counting personal expenses and travel.

Bemidji State has a COA of $16K/year. [Tuition & Fees - Undergraduate Admissions - Bemidji State University](Tuition & Aid | Admissions | Bemidji State University)

So you went to Truman State, which I presume was affordable, and you didn’t care for it. Fair enough.

This question comes up often enough that I’ll run through a list of generally affordable reputable schools.

Truman State is usually on anybody’s list.
UMinnesota at Morris
SUNY anything
New Mexico Institute of Mining
Brigham Young

It’s a short list. If you’re not studying computer science or business, you can attend the Harvard Extension School at night for about $1000/course. Otherwise, I think it’s about double. It gets cold here (Boston) so living indoors is highly recommended, and that’s not cheap. Other colleges might run similar programs, maybe in warmer climates where you can live in a used van year round.

Other than that, I’m not sure what you’re expecting to find.

I didn’t deposit at UIUC.
I am an Illinois resident.
I also qualified for 10,500 stafford loans next semester, and I’m transferring as a sophomore with 41 credits.
My parents bought a house right before the crash and they have a major mortgage. I also have a sibling in private school. My parents have almost no savings, and I don’t have any money saved for college either.
I’,m thinking I may be able to pull off UIUC now. I’ve got tuition covered (10.5k loans and 6k family contribution) and I’ve got a 3k loan for this spring semester coming soon. I will work over the summer and during the school year for the rest. My parents have also said they will help me with future loan payments to some extent.
Staying at CC isn’t an option

Did you apply to any of the other public Us in Illinois? Wouldn’t WIU or SIU be more affordable? Is your major only possible at UIUC?
