This is true. I think they also tend to be overly dramatic, “I might as well die, if I can’t do/have/buy…”
I think much of the drama is an offensive move…they’re hoping that you won’t call their bluff.
In truth, when push comes to shove, and they don’t have the money to spend, they’ll adjust.
Perhaps the OP just only pay the rent and let the Mom live on her income, that way the rent is always paid and she can deal with life herself on the rest of it?
That’s a good idea, but even with that generosity, there should be some insistence or control to make sure that certain things, like the electric bill get auto-paid as soon as the pension comes each month.
