Business - Cal Poly SLO/UCIrvine/SJSU?

ID:
Asian Female
may change to business advertising or something related to psych or art.
not entirely sure of major minor…

I’ve visited all three campuses.

San Jose State
-too close to home
-downtown
-good study abroad business opportunities
-larger variety of businesses classes
-quite comfortable and convenient

UC Irvine
-far from home
-urban
-opportunity to change major
-big classes, i like
-more comfortable with people

Cal Poly SLO
-far enough from home
-small town…
-according to my impression, it is like 80% white.
so it was harder to relate with others during their student open house thing
-academics,classes are great
-hard to change major.

from you desciption, it seems like you like uc irvine morer.

I agree with nervous re: UC Irvine although I would not consider it an urban location.

If the ethnic make up of the school is an issue, then it sounds like Irvine is your choice, being that is has a predominantly Asian student population.

One thing to consider though; when you eventually go out to the “real world” to look for a job, is the racial make up of your potential employer going to be a factor in your decision? [In this competitive economy - I hope not].

It might actually be beneficial to leave your comfort zone and learn to be comfortable working, studying, and socializing with others who are “different” from you. This applies to both white and minority students.

I felt comfortable at cal poly just walking around the campus. Even though its not seen as very diverse, i could look out into the crowd and see a lot of asian/latino students (hardly any black students though lol…??) Although, when I took the tour, there was like ONLY white people on the tour, so that was a bit weird. I am half white, my high school is 29% black 22% latino 21% asian and 24% white, so its sort of equal and there is A LOT of diversity. There will be more white people but the diversity isn’t limited to the point where it will effect my school decision, its not like boston college lol. /ramble

I am also a biz major too, and I don’t think its too hard to switch majors into psych or art, but you seem to like Irvine the most lol

based on businessweek, slo is the best business school out of all the three

SLO is no doubt the best business school out of the 3, the factors you should look at is the lack of diversity (considering you are asian), the town (slightly rural, and nowhere any big cities), and which is overall a better fit for you (socially people at SLO party a lot… UCI and SJSU dont have a really large party scene).

CPSLO

 • Best Business School out of the 3
 • Nice high class town
 • Most traditional college experience (Sports, Drinking/partying, etc)
 • Lack of diversity

SJSU

 • You shouldnt even consider it over Cal Poly or UCI

UCI

 • Nice city, right in OC, and very close to Newport Beach]
 • Very Asian, which you may see as a + or -
 • Business program is new, and very well might become very highly regarded within the next 4 years.
