Buy this violin?

It's a Nicolo Bianchi full sized violin with the label "Bianchi Nicolo Luthier Decore A Nizza 1831"
+ newly set up and adjusted by a professional violin maker and currently has new Evah Pirazzi strings

The seller is asking for $1300, curious as to what you guys think?
It's a nice old violin, but I'm kind of suspicious. Seems like it's worth more.

I would advise against purchasing that violin.

I'm curious why?

Because it is a violin.

Oh. I need a new violin anyway though.

You do not need a new violin. Trust me. Buy a gun.

I got mine for $700 at some online store, I think.

Can't you call the person to ask whether you can try it out to see if you like it? Or if you can pick up the violin yourself, you can ask someone who performs professionally to accompany you to get a second opinion...

Yah I guess. But for a violin that old, $1300 sounds a bit on the lower end. I mean, most older violins cost a lot more. Is the seller just selling cheap, or does the violin just suck?

$1300 sounds like a perfectly fine price for a violin in general, though it does sound quite rather low for the violin described. But I think you'd be better off purchasing a viola.

Have a look around it. They store should probably let you hold it, try playing a few notes. And hopefully the seller is well-recommended? Just don't buy anything sketch.

Unless he's a violin player.

Ha ha, it's off a craig's list advert which is why I'm kind of suspicious. The pics look nice though.

And I would like to buy one of those old violins and this seems like a very reasonable price.

^I actually googled the name you mentioned and that craigslist page came up.

... no idea :/. PM one of those music savvy parents in the music major forum?

Why would you pay $1300 for something on craigslist?

bump this up.

A viola is actually more expensive than a violin.

Are you even going pro as a violin player? Because if not then it's a total waste of money.

Evah Pirazzi strings are top notch.

I don't know who Nicolo Bianchi is, but a violin from 1831 should be more.
You probably can't test it out....
It probably has some defect (cracking, needs to be revarnished, wood worn away, etc). either that or it's a steal. or nicolo bianchi sucks.

^ That was what I was thinking.

If it is a steal, I don't want to pass such an opportunity up.

Cmon what are the chances of it being a steal. If the guy really wanted to give it away, he'd give it to a friend or something. Unless if he needs quick cash? A violin seller? yeah right.

/persuasive language

I suppose they're probably some defect then...

Perhaps I have been too optimistic in thinking that there was a good deal.
