<p>My daughter is getting her first apartment in Manhattan next month and she need to buy a mattress.
Can anyone give suggestions for places she can find a good, ( but inexpensive), mattress ?</p>
<p>Go to Macy’s - they have a wide variety of price points (I bought the cheapest one they had and it is fine). They seem to always have a sale. Also, their delivery service was the best delivery experience I have ever had (and I am married 30 years so we have had lots of deliveries over the years) - they came on time, were in and out in minutes, took the old one away, wore booties to keep my floor clean, moved away anything that might get damaged during the delivery, and were polite. </p>

<p>IKEA has mattresses and delivers. Also the chain Bob’s Discount Furniture. Both charge for delivery but might be worth the extra cost.</p>
<p>I would also start with Macy’s and maybe look at Sleepy’s too. There are quite a few Sleepy’s stores in Manhattan. We had the same situation last summer with our daughter so I will share the lessons we learned. She made a selection at Macy’s and arranged delivery for the next weekend. Then she found out that her apartment building doesn’t allow weekend move-ins. Macy’s was unable to offer a delivery slot to coincide with her assigned move-in time so she had to cancel the order and get a mattress at Sleepy’s. Her building also required that any delivery company provide proof of insurance to building management before they would be allowed to use the freight elevator. Sleepy’s was willing to do that but management rejected their paperwork twice because it didn’t exactly adhere to their standard. The third time was the charm and we were able to get the mattress delivered at the allotted time. This whole process would have been less stressful had she started the process a couple of weeks before her move.</p>

<p>1-800-mattres, or something close to that? I looked at SLEEPYS, and they wouldn’t discount much. So I ordered from the 1800 place, and it was delivered from SLEEPYS. I’ve usually just looked for the best deal.</p>
<p>Sleepys will most definitely nickel and dime you to death. We actually bought our last set from them…and we like the set…but the shopping was like buying a used car. We went to look at what was on sale for $499 a set. They were true garbage. The guy tried to sell us a $1400 set. Um…no fella, we came looking for a $500 set. We started to leave…and he said…“wait, let me talk to my manager.” (Sound familiar ?) guess what, we got the $1400 set for…$500. But we had to pay $90 delivery and $50 for them to haul away the old one.</p>

<p>At least with used cars you can look up the make and model and decide what one you want. Mattresses are made deliberately impossible to compare by a very shady industry, with names that mean nothing and are unique to various retailers. Like the Sealy Superfantabulous Prestige Deluxe you found at Sleepys but want to find a better price? Forget it, because at Macys it’s probably called the Superduper Elite Deluxe and has an entirely different cover fabric besides, so you’ll never find it. And the bargaining aspect is rampant–we were once able to gain a significant discount at an upscale department store by simply demanding it. <p>Macys does not lie when they call themselves the mattess professionals lol. They deliver very quickly and will bring the mattress to her apartment door. Very good service and she can go to the 34th street mattess salon in Macys</p>

I think D will give Sleepy’s a try, and then call 1-800 Mattress and see if they can give a better deal.

<p>I agree you should start with Macy’s. My daughter did the shopping on her own, but I suspect she would have gotten a better deal at Macy’s had we been able to work out the delivery schedule. I would use Sleepy’s as a back up plan.</p>
<p>Ok, change of plan, I’ll suggest that my D start with Macy’s. They should be having a 4th of July sale.

<p>My D and her roommate got their mattresses delivered from IKEA to their 5th floor walkup.</p>
<p>IKEA is her next stop, but the mattress is the only thing she needs and ikea’s delivery charge is $100.
Great if you r buying a lot of items but kind of expensive for just a mattress I think </p>

Her budget is only $500-600 so I told her she may have to work hard to stick to her limit</p>
<p>I don’t know how Macys is, but I have gone to mattress discount stores and offered half the price they were advertising a mattress for, and walked away with the mattress. If she finds a mattress and they won’t bargain, she can always order online or go to another branch of the same store. But, My experience is many years old. Things may be different now. </p>
