Buying A New (or Used) Car Experience During Supply Chain Shortages

Driving down the freeway this morning, I saw a large junk car hauler with an open bed. There were 4 cars loaded on top of each other with the following message spray-painted in large bright orange letters: “NO CATT.”

For those of us with gas-powered cars still, they offer catalytic converter shields, which can be installed, if your “CATT” is vulnerable. Not all of them are.

I just replaced my 2014 Kia Sorento (was a lemon from day one, had put so much $ into it and it needed another $2k), I cannot believe people are paying 12k over msrp for Kia’s! I will never buy another.) I decided on a Toyota RAV 4 hybrid and wanted new. First dealer didn’t have any in stock but I could “order” one and hope my Kia didn’t die in the meantime. Stopped at another dealer, they had gotten 6 in that morning and two were left. I bought the one that had the option package I wanted, for $1250 over MSRP without even test driving it :joy:. They did have 1.9% financing, so there’s that.

Congratulations. Hope that you got the color that you preferred.

It’s a good color, there were several I would have been fine with. Maybe not my first choice if I could have had anything.

Were you required to sign an arbitration agreement ?

For what? Not that I know of.

For any disputes with the dealer.

(Interesting subject to research via google.)

A dealer local to us is asking $4k over for RAV4 Hybrids, so you did all right in comparison. Which trim did you get? (LE, XLE, XSE, Limited)

I got the XLE.

We ordered the 2022 Pacifica Pinnacle a few days ago. We put a small deposit down and will pay MSRP when the vehicle arrives. No date for that. We shopped around for a dealer that wouldn’t charge more than MSRP. We’ve had our Town and Country for 166,000 miles now and it still looks pretty good and runs well. So we went for another one. I’m very practical minded and I don’t care that minivans aren’t ‘cool’. They carry more people and more luggage and now baby gear for the grandbaby than any other vehicle.

The Chysler Pacifica received a very high road test score of 85 to 88 from Consumer Reports. It is rated slightly higher than the Honda Odyssey–but it is a very slight difference.

Last winter we were doing a little hiking with the dogs. Thirty minutes. We parked at a pull-off on a busy road. Got back to the truck and someone sawzall’d my cats.

Insurance said it would be a month before they could even order them from Toyota. Had to go aftermarket. Feeling lucky that it only took a week to get it fixed.

A Washington state Subaru dealer lists one vehicle’s price as:

MSRP $40,658

Market Price $45,653

It does not help that some of the cheapest most basic cars are no longer sold new in the US.

toyota rav 4 prime- any ideas where to look?

The first online place I would look for research is the RAV4 Prime subreddit on Reddit. Search for spreadsheet there and you should find a thread where a link to a Google doc is updated monthly. That will have which dealers are getting what. If you are in Colorado as your username suggests, you may be mostly out of luck since the vast majority are going to Cailifornia ZEV states. Many people from non-ZEV states have had success getting one from a state that does have them and either driving the car back or having it shipped. If you are in California and don’t want to pay over MSRP, there are a few dealers that do MSRP deals, but they have long waiting lists. Longo Toyota in El Monte seems to get the most and they are at MSRP. Walnut Creek Toyota is another one and I think One Toyota in Oakland. John Elway Toyota in SoCal is also supposedly MSRP. If you can check the Reddit spreadsheet right after an update, you’ll find a batch that haven’t even shown up on dealer sites yet and are in transit from Japan. In the past it seems like people in the Northeast had better luck at getting them at MSRP, but I think that is changing. If you have any questions about the vehicle, let me know and I’ll try to help.
