Buying used books for AP English

So, I just bought my copy of The Great Gatsby from Half Price Books for AP English Lang. On the inside cover, someone had drawn the Confederate flag and written “The South Shall Rise Again!!!” Every word capitalized. With just that many exclamation points.

… I’m a little weirded out now.

Have any of you ever found really bizarre stuff in used books?

I bought a used book from my local used book store and there were detailed notes in the margin by the previous owner. The book was Jane Eyre, and it seems like a feminist had it had it before me. Some of the notes she had written were very funny (to me at least).

I also had a copy of Don Quixote and the previous owner highlighted every vowel on the first 20 pages. It seems like he or she was very bored, and got tired after 20 pages.

I bought a very used copy of Things Fall Apart. Someone had written on the first page, just below the title: “…including this book.”

My copy of Candide had translations of the easiest words (i.e. “irons” (“we will go”), “il y avait” (“there were”), etc.) instead of, you know, “eventre,” which is French for “eviscerated.” Frustrated me to no end.
