@Marlinmom: I am not an admissions officer but the posting by @ugradbiz stated that an admissions officer came to their school and said that SLO was still reviewing Freshman applications. If that is true, how could they start waitlisting if they have not finished reviewing all applications??. This is just common sense.
Maybe there are still some majors that they have not filled all the spots and are still reviewing but based on the last 5 years of decisions, only a few more acceptances will be trickling out and then comes the rejections.
Personally I hope I am wrong and SLO is just waiting to see how many applicants SIR immediately and how many opt into the waitlist before they start accepting again, but would it not make sense that if spots open up, the waitlisted applicants would have crack???
@Marlinmom For some reason they like to send out the denials all at once and the computer glitch the transfer student decisions are having is what’s holding things up making it extremely painful for the freshman students that still have no determination yet.
@gumbymom what I found interesting when I called today, and confirmed DD was on the waitlist, was that when I replied ok, so we will wait until after May 1st for a determination; she said, not necessarily - could be sooner, keep checking the portal. What the heck? Are they going to change their mind in a couple of weeks depending on how many kids SIR? What a frustrating process…
Thank you, @eyemgh and @sc anteater for clarifying my questions about mech engineering stats, it actually makes me feel a little better knowing my son is competing with such high-caliber students!
@CaliKenMom: If spots open in your daughters major prior to May 1. then she could be admitted earlier. As many individuals have stated, being waitlisted is “admissions purgatory”.
@Gumbymom Yes, the admissions officer did come to my school and did give that information to us. I was only relaying the information that was presented to us today, no harm intended. I have already been accepted so it doesn’t really apply to me, but I am guessing that as you said, there are possibly some majors that have not been completely filled, or that there actually are some spots left and there might be a minuscule wave of acceptances. The waitlist aspect is definitely weird and doesn’t make sense, but I am just relaying the most recent information I have been given by an admissions officer.
My OOS D checked her portal and it still says her application is under review. She applied for architecture. So that would mean she is denied and just waiting for her email or letter from the school?
@ugradbiz: Did not mean to pick on you and BTW Congratulations. I just wanted to point out that there are many applicants still waiting and I think that an admissions officer is giving false hope especially if this whole scenario really does not make sense in regards to the waitlisted applicants. All anyone can do is wait and see.
Wishing you the best of luck in all your endeavors.
@Gumbymom Haha - not a problem at all! I totally understand what you are saying though. I really hope that he wasn’t lying and that it is different this year, meaning that there are more acceptances to come. I could sense your slight anger towards the officer through your messages haha. And thanks! I am pretty excited. I applied to 20 schools and want to hear from the remaining 8 before I make a decision, but right now I am deciding between SLO, Indiana Bloomington, Santa Clara University, and Cal. They are all great for business so it is a tough call. The AO today was pretty convincing but didn’t seem to know much about Orfalea which was a slight disappointment for me. I am considering going to the welcome reception in a couple of weeks or doing the overnight cultural weeekend at SLO. Do you know anything about these programs?
Its a frustrating process. As @eyemgh pointed out your son applied to one of the toughest admits in mechanical engineering. In years past the admits to ME had very high MCAs. I have not gone through all the past threads, but I cannot remember seeing an MCA below 4700 for ME the last two years. It is likely your son is just on the bubble and hopefully the waitlist has some movement this year.
@84stag No need to apologize. I could feel your frustration through the computer screen. If only admission were like they were back when we were applying! I remember spending all of ten minutes thinking about it.
@Gumbymom Thank you! I’ll definitely check that link out. Yes, Orfalea is an amazing business school and they have many great internship opportunities, but with so many decisions left, I don’t want to make a final decision quite yet. Thank you for all your help and I’ll keep you updated/tell you where I end up!
Can anyone point me to the thread of last year’s CP SLO admissions? Also, the class of 2021 final decisions thread? I’m not sure why I can’t locate them. TIA
@CentralCoaster I totally agree with you. Grab your waitlist spot if you’re still waiting to hear. Once the UC notifications go out, spots will (or won’t) open up. I do not believe at this point there will be further “waves” of acceptances. If there are, it would be a first. I believe it’s still acceptances, waitlist notifications, denials. Kids apply to so many schools nowadays that most schools have enhanced their waitlists. Not sure which was the chicken and which was the egg, but because it’s so competitive, kids apply to more schools than ever before, and because kids apply to more schools than ever before, the numbers are skewed until everyone grabs their preferred spot. What a world. Bottom line, I believe everyone ends up where they were meant to be.
Hi @CaliKenMom, my daughter got in to biological sciences last Friday. Her stats were 4.33 and 1490 Sat. Lots of leadership, e.c.s , sports, volunteer.
