@Carbonman It is actually more like 8,500 more than last year (that includes first time freshman and transfer - not grad/post grads). And they should carefully review this year - they over accepted and close to 900 too many students enrolled causing a lot of issues from overcrowding in dorms for freshman, upper classman not getting on campus housing, long lines for food and the worst of all even more difficult to get classes because it is already so impacted. Finally, they are trying to pass a proposal to raise tuition for OOS students starting this fall and in their words - they need to be in “good faith” about the tuition amount and increases upon student’s acceptance…so it seems that until they iron that out - they really can’t accept students until they know what the tuition will be.
My daughter also applied to UTD, Embry Riddle, Colorado School of Mines, Rose Hulman and Olin College of Engineering.
@Carbonman the number of applications for 2017 is reported as 56,919 total - 47,571 first time freshmen and 8,348 transfer (see https://admissions.calpoly.edu/prospective/profile.html). For 2018, the number of apps is 65,507 total, 54,732 FTF so it’s an increase of 8,588 (6,161 freshmen) from last year, not 3,379. Moreover, they over-admitted 1,000+ students last year and had to scramble to house everyone. They want to make sure they don’t do that again this year. Coupled with the new app, the problem with SAT scores, and making sure they don’t over-enroll again a delay is not unreasonable.
This is from the CalPoly Web site: “This is the largest undergraduate applicant pool in Cal Poly history, with 65,507 undergraduates submitting on-time applications,” Associate Vice Provost James Maraviglia said in a news release. That represents an increase of 12 percent over the 58,429 who applied last year." So, I stick by my numbers Yes, there were some strange SAT reporting issues. I am actually not upset or concerned about the delay. I was responding to a poster who said that it was 10,000 new on-time applicants who were causing the delay. That didn’t make sense to me. I don’t make any decisions until the UC decisions are out so I wait another month anyway. But best wishes and good luck to you!
@Carbonman Interesting - this is from Cal Poly’s website:
Cal Poly Fall 2018 Enrollment Applications Top 65,000 to Set Another School Record
SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly received a record number of applications with more than 65,000 first-time freshmen and transfer students seeking to enroll for the 2018-19 school year.
“This is the largest undergraduate applicant pool in Cal Poly history with 65,507 undergraduates submitting on-time applications,” said James Maraviglia, associate vice provost for marketing and enrollment development. “This includes 54,732 first-time freshmen and 10,775 upper-division transfer students seeking to attend Cal Poly.”
It is a 13 percent increase from the 48,609 incoming freshmen who applied in 2016 and a 31 percent rise from the 8,240 transfer students who applied last year.
“The interest in attending our Learn by Doing campus underscores the value of a Cal Poly degree, a welcoming campus community, and especially our award-winning faculty who are committed to student success,” Maraviglia added.
Nearly one in five (19 percent) of freshmen applicants applied only to Cal Poly between Oct. 1 and the Nov. 30 deadline.
Acceptance decisions should be announced well before the April 1 national acknowledgment date. Fall classes begin Sept. 20, 2018.

Mid-year grades all AP classes: 2 A+'s, 3 A’s
I will most likely not be attending any California university.
Why @KES2022 ? Many UC’s Computer Science programs are light-years ahead of UChicago, Harvard, Yale, Duke, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Amherst, Johns Hopkins, and UCs are much cheaper for you.
@teachmama2
I’m OOS from Florida.
I applied to UF and UCF and got accepted to both, just waiting to hear from CPSLO.
Major - Aerospace Engineering
Fully dual-enrolled, expecting Associate’s degree this spring.

@bogeyorpar,
There’s no question that many of the UC’s, as well as some of the Cal States, have good CS programs.
Fortunately, money is not an issue with my family. I am not seeking financial aid nor any scholarships. The only California school that might have my interest is Cal, but I’m not very excited about that school’s overall environment…I’d rather not get into that discussion.
Brand name is huge with my family. My parents believe that brand name is much more important than the perceived differences in the schools’ particular CS programs…who knows…
Oh, I forgot to mention I applied to Purdue and Georgia Tech as well.
Prestige and ability to network with on-campus recruiters to get internships/jobs is one of most important aspects of picking a school, especially for CS. UMich is Berkeley-tier for CS, and recruiters will be fighting over students @ any of the Ivies + uChicago. @KES2022 will have much better job placement going to any of those schools, and this is coming from someone who will be attending Cal Poly if I get in.
@KES2022 if you don’t mind me asking what nationality are you? And what type of ECs did you have? Congrats on the acceptances.
So why waste money on so many state school applications?
“money is not an issue”
OK, it is not a huge issue here either, but why apply to UC Davis, and Santa Cruz, and San Diego, and Santa Barbaraa and SLO and SDSU and San Jose when you know you’ll get in to the best of this group? Seems like a huge waste of everyone’s time and money.
@LvMyKids2, I’m Hispanic from the US. My ECs include summer internships in an IT department with a large company, Rotary Club volunteer hours and other volunteer work, but my most time consuming EC is my athletics. I’m a two-time league champion in wrestling—junior and senior year. In fact, I am at a hotel this very moment (arrived late last night) at wrestling’s CIF Championships as I type this. I will be competing later today and tomorrow.
@VickiSoCal, I applied to the UCs and Cal States to cover all my bases, especially with a computer science major. College admissions is pathetically unpredictable.
Applying to eight UCs was as easy as applying to one of them - same application - right?
KES2022 Congratulations on your wrestling accomplishments. That sport takes so much discipline! You’re going to have a tough time choosing between great schools, but all of that can wait! Best of luck for CIF success!
anyone from California heard?
@acceptmehplz Still nothing for me, there will most likely be OOS decisions first.
@KES2022 I’m not sure I see why applying to so many schools. I think this becomes the issue that kids apply to so many colleges - just in case - thereby increasing applications to many colleges unnecessarily. IMO applying to all the UCs and cal state is a complete waste AND takes away from others who really want to go there and it may be a reach. In other words, you may be taking an offer that could have gone to another. And no matter what anybody says Hispanic is an advantage. With your test scores and ECs you should be getting into many of those top schools.
