Okay, I called the admissions office to ask an estimated date of release for decisions since I’m dying to know. I got the expected “no later than April 1st” answer.
If they wait that long, that is disappointing. UW is looking more attractive. A rep from there came on CC and answered questions which was very helpful. My daughter is ready to make a decision and doesn’t want to wait another month.
My son is going to formally accept CO School of Mines tonight. We had a great second visit there over the weekend. Plus, these acceptance delays, the talk of overcrowding and concerns about getting in classes, focus on increasing OOS tuition to cover budget shortfalls has made us really question Cal Poly as an option. At current CP OOS tuition, if we factor in his Mines merit the two are a wash in general costs - higher transportation to/from and murky future costs at Cal Poly make it a bit less attractive.
How was the admitted student event? Same as the Mines preview? Lots of same students looking at these two schools.
Very well done. Afternoon breakouts by interest (we did Comp Sci, Career Center - which was impressive, and Engineering /Design- the last was a throwaway, he’s 100% CS) Student panels or presenters were forthcoming (and in every case able to articulate very good reasons why they choose Mines). We did not do a preview event - just a normal one on one tour and info session a year ago. Housing tours allowed access to every dorm- rooms, bathrooms, common areas, etc.
That’s basically how the preview was organized. We really enjoyed it as well
@eatwelllivefully (and any others who are committing to other schools and are 100% sure they’re not going to Cal Poly) – please withdraw your application from Cal Poly. Might help somebody get off the waitlist quicker!
Does tomorrow still look good for OOS?
@SC Anteater I totally agree with you
My guess is tomorrow for OOS and Friday for IS.
Take the month of March, CalPoly. I would rather you get it right than get it fast.
I haven’t heard a peep yet!
@teachmama2 - I applied to the Computer Science Program.
@Coopy1 - Thank you. Good luck to your daughter and everyone here who are anxiously awaiting the decision, myself included.
How important is the 10 semesters of English? I realize that is 5 years. Honestly, how many kids take 5 years of English. Most take the required 4 years and the real go-getters take AP Lang and AP lit in 11th and 12th grade?? I realize this is what CP recommends, but let’s be real, unless this is your dream school, I don’t think that many kids actually take 10 semesters of English.
@LvMyKids2 it depends. If you’ve already maxed out math and science, then you only need another 50 points to max out rigor. If you have an extra year of foreign language or performing arts then no worries. This assumes that the 750 cap still applies, though.
@melloG thank you. Another question - If you take 5 years of language (ex: Spanish 1 starting in 8th grade and end in 12th grade with AP Spanish 5), does this count as 4 years (because you took 4 in high school) or 5 years (because you got to level 5? Thank you!
@melloG and same for math…if one take algebra 1 in 8th grade - and then takes 4 more year of math in high school. Does that count for 4 years total or 5 years because Algebra 1 is actually required, but taken in 8th grade. Thanks in advance!!
@LvMyKids2 as long as the 8th grade spanish is listed in the 9th grade section of the appication, it will count as 5 years. But the MCA bonus for foreign language maxes out at 4 years. Same for the math, except the 5 years of math will get you the full 500 MCA bonus points for math.
I can vouch for Mines. Son didn’t get accepted to Cal Poly SLO (his first choice) but got in at Mines. He’s a sophomore in Mechanical Engineering and can’t imagine going anywhere else! Son #2 applied to SLO, but probably won’t get in.
If you go to the login portal there is a notification that says it will be down 8 to midnight today. Maybe they are going to upload decisions?
