@Goolia66 those percentages are for an older version of the MCA for when each major had a different set of required/desired coursework. The version we’ve been using is the 2013 algorithm, where it seems it was unified for all majors, so the percentages are fixed; 45% GPA, 33% test scores, 15% rigor, 7% EC/work.
Of course, no one here really knows what they use now, but the version @eyemgh posted is the most recent one known, and is as good a tool as we have to compare apples to apples (and fight off the Tufts syndrome/yield protection myths).
@calpolyalum I am just going by your post. “Her words were exactly that they were ‘no where near being done handing out acceptances.’” What the admissions person said was a true statement! This kind of stringing applicants along is what they have done in the past and I think it’s awful the way they do it. I think the students deserve a less stressful way of admissions decisions. They have enough stress already!!!
I want everyone to know that I am not against the people on this thread. Quite the opposite. I am against the way Cal Poly sends out their decisions. They need to change by sending out all decisions at once so people know if they are accepted, denied or waitlisted. Especially because the waitlisted will have another very painful process afterwards.
@CentralCoaster, I think the thing to remember is that most CP applicants do not follow College Confidential. They have no idea what’s happening and simply await, blissfully in the dark. We can blame CP for the way that they do this, or we can agree that obsessively following here has ramifications, some good, but some certainly bad. We all have our own piece in this too.
@eyemgh I see your point, but word-of-mouth is very powerful too and I suspect that even those not on this website are getting info from their peers and are very confused by this process. “Why did so-and-so get accepted and I got no response?” I just feel so bad for the kids and parents that have to endure this extended stress. My kids have applied to a large amount of colleges over the years and I have never seen it done like this, even at other schools that have rolling admissions.
A lot of people have heard from the major I applied for (Business Administration), and I have still not heard yet. Is this bad? Does anyone know if Cal Poly releases all acceptances first, or if they just have not released all acceptances yet? I am so nervous!
@eyemgh I agree with the @CentralCoaster - no one nowadays awaits “blissfully in the dark”. One way or another (classmates, social media, emails) our kids know what’s going on. I think that CP’s notification process is cruel.
@MelloG It is surprising that with the weight ec’s carry, sometimes being the difference between acceptance and rejection, Cal Poly does not verify the volunteer/work hours reported by applicants.
@crystallight my DD did the same thing regarding English. I did not find this out until last week. Our local CSU said to get them a transcript and they would fix it, as they had not issued her decision yet either. But Cal Poly’s response was basically, too bad so sad. They do not change grades at this point… We are very bummed.
Several acceptances for Business Admin on March 2nd @LaurenSterns . In the past CP has released all acceptances first (by college). At least that is the trend of the past several years. I am not an expert so can’t say if that is how they will do it this year. Mostly because people will get mad if I say that.
Last year my oldest son and I had no clue that the decisions were coming out in February. We thought they would come out mid March like UCs. It was a total surprise.
This year as I and my middle son are following this thread, we get to know what is going on. It is especially stressful for him. I told him to hold hope till he starts seeing transfer admissions, which normally come out the following Monday after the first wave of freshman admission. But that has not happened (as far as I know)yet.
It looks like CalPoly is doing admission release differently.
So I just called and go, "Yes we are still sending out rolling acceptance decisions for freshmen, and I even asked
for in state, non-transfer students and he said Yes, Then he added we have until April 1st. with so many applications
this process can take a while.
@marinay, every school’s application and admission process is brutal, if we allow it to be. We put FAR too much emphasis and worry into this and it need not be that way. No college defines an individual. What they do while they are there does. Don’t believe me? Look up where most Fulbright Scholars come from. They are largely schools you’ve never heard of. Again, I’m not trivializing the process. It is stressful. It is what we make of it though. Hang in there.
